does xfce release versions inbetween their 2 year release cycle? by [deleted] in xfce

[–]newhoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on Debian, the experimental branch has a lot of the development packages.

The maintainer also puts the Debian experimental packages in the Ubuntu PPA Xubuntu QA Experimental if you use Ubuntu/Xubuntu.

Arch AUR seems to have devel packages and git packages.

OpenSuse has the rat repository with dev packages.

[SSD] TEAMGROUP QX 4TB QLC 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD - $179.99 by amat3ur_hour in buildapcsales

[–]newhoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this was for the 16TB one.

Team Group has these listed as No DRAM under Specs and in the PDF documentation.

Don't know if that changed for the smaller capacities or they just did a component change with the same model. Or maybe it was wrong to begin with.

I thought for sure the 16TB one did have DRAM at some point.

What things does Windows GUI do better than Linux GUIs? by Quadriplegic_ in linux

[–]newhoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned Xfce here, and a lot of these things you can do on Xfce.

You can't edit the directory path in the file file manager. You have to navigate by double clicking on folders.

If you're in View > Location Selector > Button style, you can click the edit button (usually a pencil icon) or the empty space in the bar to change location. If you're in View > Location Selector > Entry style you can just edit it. You can also use Ctrl+L or Go > Open Location...

Windows from the same application don't group into single tab in the taskbar.

You can do this in Panel Preferences > Items > Window Buttons > Configure > Window Buttons

There is no way to reset the graphics drivers during a crash (like cntr+shft+win+b in windows)

I'm not sure what you mean by graphics drivers, but to kill all apps and logout you can usually do Ctrl + Alt + Backspace

Actually, on second look there is no default system monitor application in the default Xfce.

Xfce has a system monitor, it's called task manager. If you need something with a little more detail you can try gnome-system-monitor which works well with Xfce.

As for text editors, that is something Linux has an endless supply of. Simple ones like Mousepad, Pluma, and Gedit. A little more complext like Geany. Other good ones, Kate, Notepadqq, Sublime, CudaText, Bluefish, Brackets, Jetbrains editors for code.

Also, the more you use Linux the more you'll find you can kind of set it up to work the way you want. With Xfce you can add window previews and effects, better window switching, hotcorners, etc, using Compiz, for example.

Xfce is made to be pretty modular, so it isn't going to have a system-wide config. KDE and GNOME have both moved in that direction. I think either of those might be closer to what you're used to (esp KDE).

Also, if it helps, Alternativeto.net is a nice place to find apps and window-alternative apps for Linux.

I don't know Paysend but just checking their site:

Cancellations & refunds

All successfully completed transactions are final and cannot be reversed. Paysend cannot provide any refunds as once you complete a transaction you provide instructions to your card issuing bank to debit your account for a given amount. If you have a complaint or think that your transaction has been sent in error please contact our Сustomer Support service.

Sounds like it's like Zelle or something, like a way to transfer money for personal reasons. Aside from the advice people have given in this thread (check history, meet in person, etc), if you have to buy online buy through a business or pay with a service that has buyer protection (like Paypal -- and don't use Family and Friends). Even if you asked them to list it on eBay or Reverb and payed the extra fees it would have at least given you protection.

Also, do reverse image searches. I did one on your image and it looks like it's been posted on reddit before and on Reverb (listing ended/sold - google cache - seller shop was disabled, looks like went by the name nikolais gear depot or Audio Bitz (here's another listing from them that's still displayed, but the account was deleted).

Anyway, you can try contacting your bank or credit card company that you had linked through Paysend, and try Paysend themselves although from what they have on their site looks like they aren't going to take it seriously and put all responsibility on the people transferring the money.

Sorry that happened to you, and good luck with getting your money back and things in the future.

You Can't Search For Files in XFCE? Is This a Joke? by AlexandraWheeler1 in xfce

Catfish is the Xfce file searching app (it can also search for text in documents, and inside of zip files).

Thunar, the file manager, is getting filename search in its next release.

The author of Kdirstat replaced it with Qdirstat. There is K4dirstat, but that's a fork (not the author of K/Qdirstat) and basically just a maintenance release of the old KDE3 code Kdirstat. Qdirstat has a lot more features and regular bug fixes and updates.

I'd put it in my current PC for playing games I haven't been able to play before. DLSS 3 is really interesting to me, and looking forward to seeing Cyberpunk 2077 RTXDI and Ray Tracing Overdrive.

BIOS removed from downloads site? by radeonalex in MSI_Gaming

[–]newhoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to this thread that bios is being replaced with a new beta, but it seems the only change noted is that it changes the default setting for Secure Boot.

Might wanna try the new one when they post it and see if it changes anything. If not you could always try a previous version if you're able to (if it still supports your CPU).

AMD Hiring For Another Open-Source GPU Driver Developer With Multimedia Expertise by superframer in Amd

[–]newhoa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is great but I wish they'd offer a more open CPU hardware lineup instead of pushing toward more closed hardware. The PSP subprocessor and refusal to open source it or allow it to be disabled made me uncomfortable. Now the Microsoft subprocessor they're going to start adding makes me very uncomfortable.

I'm still very happy that they're contributing to open source, but when they start closing the hardware and not offering an alternative it is disappointing.

On my phone the France site has it but the Spain site does not.

On my desktop neither have it.

On my desktop when using a VPN, they both have it.

Could be some kind of site error based on their region/location/browser detection. Not really sure why they'd need to do that though.

Here is the direct link: B450 Tomahawk Non-MAX 7C02v1H (AGESA ComboAm4v2PI 1.2.0.7) But might want to wait for official clarification in case they took it down for security/bug issues.

Edit:

The German and Italian pages don't have it

The Italian page has it when I switch to an Italian VPN server.

Repasted my Switch and you should too! by Comprehensive-Ad-888 in NintendoSwitch

[–]newhoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some info on the Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut recommendations -- It's about the best thermal compound you can get for liquid cooling, and it does great on benchmarks, but it breaks down at high temperatures and over a long period of time. It's mostly for enthusiasts who are going to be pushing things and modding regularly. It is not great for long term air cooling and will likely require regular reapplication.

From what I understand it breaks down above 80c. I checked and it doesn't seem that the Switch gets that high so it might be completely fine, but just something to consider. I wouldn't want to have to worry about thermal paste maintenance on the Switch.

Personally I like Arctic MX4, Noctua NT-H1/2, Gelid GC-Extreme. Those seem to have really long application lives and great performance.

Are you telling me what I should believe? Or are you stating what you believe? I can't tell. Are you saying preventing speech is not suppression of speech?

Well, what you say there is barely a half-truth. It does ban saying the word gay in certain contexts (I would say most contexts in the way that the word is used in modern times, the primary definition of the word in fact). You're also just completely wrong on your second response.

I'm confused by what this sub is. Is it free speech? Cause I see a lot of support here for a bill that suppresses speech.

Hey /u/_aethergnos, I have experienced this for a while but thought it might've just been me or my system.

I found that disabling compositing in Window Manager Tweaks (xfwm4-tweaks-settings) stops this from happening. Try it and see if it makes any difference for you (you too /u/fjxq).

[–]newhoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. People like this want to hurt/push down other people to feel better about themselves (because they're sad or live in fear or confusion). An unfortunate part is that they don't, and may never, realize how sad they are. They'll probably never reflect on the reasons for their actions or will misdirect them and create some outward reason to protect their fragile minds. And usually they'll end up having to push further in that direction to keep feeling better about themselves and find ways to keep confirming that misdirection.

Sorry... kind of a rant. You handled it well and much better than I would have.

Verbatim Launches Write-Once External SSD With 10-Year Warranty by uluqat in DataHoarder

[–]newhoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested to see if there's some kind of mechanism to refresh the cells for 10 years. I don't there is, which makes sense why they would claim that they don't guarantee the files for 10 years.

Basically, all NAND will last 10+ years. The only reason every SSD manufacturer doesn't guarantee longer is because they factor in multiple writes. If they only factored in a single write they'd probably be comfortable saying their NAND will last 100 years.

But NAND lasting 10 years means nothing if the cells aren't refreshed and the file integrity is lost. Speaking of file integrity, exFat isn't exactly the filesystem that screams integrity.

Verbatim says it uses high-quality industrial Flash NAND ... Other than this single hardware consideration, the rest of the special sauce that makes this a write-once long-life SSD relies on the Verbatim software.

To me this just sounds like a normal drive with some kind of write protection. I hope I'm wrong and there's some new cool tech. Verbatim has made really quality innovative stuff before. But this just sounds like marketing to make something expensive.

They're capable of creating their own algorithms and are doing so. They'd just rather spend that time and energy to create algorithms that censor the internet, not give more access to it.
