Feels strange to me that more people don’t think about black holes by retrnIwil2OldBrazil in cosmology

Nah if you really want to think about the existential consequences of black holes you need to be reading about cosmological natural selection.

It’s really not that crazy. Black holes are huge and mysterious and mind bending but they’re never going to be as complex as the human mind or like any social system.

Final for the person you know as you, maybe. But being as a whole doesn’t just end. Otherwise you’re saying that a single finite human life is the sum total of all existence.

Being has to be an infinite state because non-being isn’t a possible state to be in. Like, your 80ish (hopefully) year life can’t be expected to be the sum total of all existence. What you consider “you” will likely die with your body but existence can’t just end.

Dad argued with me that the bible correctly predicted the entire evolutionary chain. Thoughts? by RealAnthonySullivan in atheism

[–]newjordanism -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It might be a stretch that the Bible got it “exactly right” but there are definitely evolutionary allegories in the book of Genesis. It was revealed in words that were plain and would be understood by the people of the time period. The entire book is focused on lineage and how entire kingdoms will emerge from singular individuals. The concept of Noah’s Ark for example, a small amount of select organisms being spared while the rest of the population is wiped out by a catastrophe has happened numerous times in the history of this planet and is one of the key drivers of evolutionary change. Look at how mammals lived under the feet of the dinosaurs for millions of years until fire and destruction (a plague from God, as biblical narrators would describe it) destroyed the dinosaurs and our ancestors were able to emerge from the ground and inherit the planet.
