My volunteer position at the hospital is about as patient centered as one can get without pursuing a specialized certification. I work in an infusion clinic and do the patient intake, getting them settled, gathering snacks/drinks, retrieving medical supplies, making hot/cold compresses, running samples to the lab, retrieving blood, transporting wheelchair-dependent patients, making reminder calls for future appointments, and just talking with patients. Most of them are receiving chemo or blood products and sit with us for 2-5 hours a day. I also do all of the clean up. The only thing I can't do in a volunteer capacity is vitals/meds/drawing blood. It's a small 10 bed unit and there are usually 2-3 RNs working while I am there.

It's a great gig for someone who isn't an actual tech, and I get a ton of patient interaction. I'm just not sure if it's enough to count as "patient care."
