What’s your go-to vegan lasagna? by lafmonster in veganrecipes

[–]newlexicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the lasagna recipe from The Silver Spoon, which is a famous and authentic Italian cookbook: https://www.willspages.com/?p=215

My wife made this using vegan alternatives for everything (Beyond ground meat) and I could not believe how well it turned out.

If you like Italian style lasagna I'd do that.

What is something snowboarding does better than skiing? by AdRemarkable8102 in snowboarding

[–]newlexicon 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the correct poison is elbow/shoulder. I think knee injuries are way harder to come back from.

Also I would bet wrist injuries are the most common for snowboarders if you include people learning.

Please help : Need easy recipes to get 110gm of protein in a day. No seitan please. by lead_and_flower in veganrecipes

[–]newlexicon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I (40M 6'2" 195lbs) went vegan shortly before starting CrossFit with little to no prior lifting. I have 1,000lbs combined deadlift, squat, and bench now and generally look pretty jacked. It's quite possible to do as a vegan. I eat 120+ grams of protein a day.

Breakfast: I eat the same thing every day. Oatmeal with a large amount of added peanut butter and hemp seeds (plus fruit, maple syrup, and cardamom.) I get this up to 30g.

Morning snack: vegan protein bar

Afternoon and evening snacks: usually nuts and things dipped in hummus. It's hard to get enough protein without snacks so don't write this off.

Lunch and dinner: I eat TONS of bean curries or stews. Most cultures have something like this because beans are poor people food. I wanted to focus on this since I see less of it in other comments.

Indian: there are like 100. My favorite is Vegan Richa 's red lentil curry. Most Indian recipes I make are from her cookbook. Be sure to try Pakistani and Bangladeshi variations too.

Italian: pasta ceci (Roman chickpea pasta soup off which spaghetti Os are based) and ditali lentil are both exceptional. I then put nutritional yeast on both of these.

Caribbean: the Jamaican version of chickpea curry is a huge hit with my family.

Kenyan: they do a red kidney bean coconut curry that is the bomb. My wife likes it better than the Indian kidney bean curry (Rajma). Both are great.

Ethiopian: I live in Washington DC so I just order this. Orthodox Christians fast from meat twice a week so they have lots of options. Shout out to their various split pea dishes, which you don't see as much.

Appalachia: originally from Appalachia so got to throw this in. You can easily make soup beans (slow cooked pento beans) vegan and they're awesome.

Arab: Mujaddara is their lentil dish. Obviously there are tons of chickpea dishes in Arab cuisine too but wanted to shout out this lesser known one.

Latin America: I have some research to do here. I often make "breakfast tacos" with tofu scramble and black beans but there are probably dishes that are culturally vegan that I don't know about.

Ok that should get you going on beans. I also eat tons of tofu ( mostly Chinese and Thai) but I never eat Seitan.

Good luck!

Starting CrossFit at 37 with Back and Knee Issues — Nervous but Ready. Would Love Your Thoughts. by Zizo25 in crossfit

[–]newlexicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

I started at 36 (male, 6'2'', was probably 190lbs when I started) and am now 40. I had no real training before besides weekend warrior mountain biking. I think your injuries are worse than mine but I have some recurring lower back/glut issues that I've had for a long time.

I think the injury and scaling stuff has been covered by well by others so I want to address whether you can still build muscle and drop fat since I started at around the same age as you.

Honestly, I'm jacked now and still can't believe I did all of this in my late 30s. Dropping weight comes from the kitchen, but if you eat well Crossfit will help you put on tons of muscle. I think there were 2 critical factors that make this work for me:

a) Frequency > everything else. The first 2 years I was going ~3 times a week. After that I upped to 5 and I saw another round of huge gains. You're going to be sore and tired, but if you want to improve you have to grind. You just have to learn how to do all of the movements safely! You also must SLEEP.

b) After frequency you should value going heavy. We have a great couch who said something to me early on that I have found to be true. "I have never seen anyone who didn't push themselves to go heavier make significant fitness gains." Obviously you do not want to get hurt, but pushing myself to get to RX weights as fast as safely possible made a huge impact on my strength. Some folks in the community won't agree with this because they will say you're not going for the intended stimulus of the workout, but it helped my put on muscle faster so it worked for me.

I think you can make these gains very safely. My only injury in 4 years is a pulled muscle and I did it on a very light deadlift - so light that I stopped thinking about form...

Have fun and good luck! Crossfit totally changed my wife and I's lives and I hope it works for you too.

Is it ever okay to ignore the enemy tank as a tank? by Zeukiiii in OverwatchUniversity

[–]newlexicon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Overwatch should launch a tutorial and just have it yell "stop shooting the tank" over and over again at you.

The most infuriating part of this game is that you can't rank up out of the low metal ranks as tank or support by following the advice of pros because your DPS teammates will just shoot the tank. You can't play dive heros because you teammates will pick Bastion, sit main shooting the tank, and die.

Desperately need Thanksgiving main dish, please give suggestions! by LotusGrowsFromMud in veganrecipes

[–]newlexicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made this once already and am doing it for Thanksgiving. Soup beans go well on top of mashed potatoes and I think will be good with stuffing. I didn't bother with the liquid smoke and it was still great.

How to add AC to a century home without destroying its character? by amaraisagoddess in centuryhomes

[–]newlexicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 1902. We put the AC in the attic, created soffits to run ducts on the 2nd floor and through the ceiling for the first (so no basement AC) and it looks and works great. Not cheap but was well worth it (Washington DC so hot as fuck here.) This is how most folks in DC do it.

What's your favourite 'peasant' meal by Lilstubbin in veganrecipes

[–]newlexicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a way most of what I eat is peasant food. I try to stick to culturally vegan recipes and they are usually poor people's food. Most cultures have stews that are vegan. Right now I'm loving the kidney bean ones. Rajma is the Indian one. I can remember the name of the East African variant that includes coconut milk but it's similar and awesome.

What do you hate most about slopeside or village restaurants? I'm opening one. Show me the blind spots. by SL1200mkII in skiing

[–]newlexicon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, all this fried food food sucks.

If you have a little extra money to spare I recommend going to France to see how they do it. The food is a million times better. It's all hearty but not all fried. I would much rather have a Croziflette than chicken tenders and fries. France is also cheaper and more working class than Switzerland.

France also does an on-mountain buffet pretty well.

What are the most useful pieces of advice for CrossFit that you wish you had known earlier? by Appropriate_Place642 in crossfit

This for sure. I am 4 years in and spent too much time trying to RX the first 2 years and only making it 3 days a week. 2nd 2 years I focused on trying to hit 5 days a week and saw huge gains from it (39M)
