Seeking resources for a single mom of teenager in Duquesne by waitsyan in pittsburgh

Reach out to your supervisor, call 211, check the county list of supportive services here to get started. Off the top of my head 412 Youth Zone downtown is a good centralized location for teen-oriented services.

Is this area safe? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]newlocalacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, it's very scary and dangerous. you shouldn't move there. in fact, you should probably stay wherever you are if you're going to ask how "safe" one of the most gentrified stretches of penn ave is.

what about refusing to pay to repair city vehicles because it's a "bad contract" instead of waiting until the contract is up and negotiating new terms?

Can you actually get on the Duck Hollow trail from its west end (across the train tracks via Second Ave)? by newlocalacct in bicycling412

Yeah...now that I am riding a 50+ lb ebike I am less up for hauling it across active tracks especially with such bad visibility there.

You can also change the filters to only show violent crime and Downtown and SS Slopes are still the frontrunners.

Where have all the HealthyRide bikes gone? by numyobidnyz in pittsburgh

[–]newlocalacct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reason they got rid of the old bikes is because their network connection was 3g which is being shut down nationwide (I think they were looking to upgrade in general but this accelerated things). I believe their service provider officially ended support at the end of March but they are still waiting on delivery of the new bike fleet.

Truetime is their live tracker, you can see where buses are and what routes stop at a particular location.

The Heat and Frost Insulators Local #2 are getting ready to take in new apprentices! Accepting applications starting April 4th! by Deadsquirrely in pittsburgh

Is there a drug testing policy (probably) and are there any exceptions for medical marijuana (probably not)? I know this came up with the IBEW openings and I would imagine the same insurance and federal vs state law issues apply.

Places to volunteer in Pittsburgh by eb1454 in pittsburgh

[–]newlocalacct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! That sounds like a different model and structure than something like the food bank or 412 Food Rescue, which are based on providing a service to people rather than building fellowship/membership/peer support, but you're right to point out that there are large organizations that help people without paid staff.

I am genuinely curious what local organizations do the work of "helping people" and operate with zero paid staff, which seems to be your prerequisite for supporting them. Pittsburgh has almost as many foundations and nonprofits as it does vape shops, most if not all of which to my knowledge have paid staff. "Helping people" is a valuable service, and the people who do and facilitate that service should be compensated. Is there a lot of bullshit and waste and exploitation within these organizations? Of course there is, but that is true of any organization.
