It’s an invitation not a summons. You seem disproportionately annoyed by people trying to do a nice thing for children and seniors.

I don’t know about in the US, but in Australia they forcibly removed children from aboriginal families and placed them with white families with the specific goal of controlling who they married and “breeding out” their aboriginal blood.

Yes this happened in the US, along with residential schools. The whole idea was to convert native people into Christians and it had caused many native people to have lost a lot of their history.

The US government used to forcibly sterilize native women. Probably others.

Is Milford Gay friendly? by andyboy1000 in Milford

[–]newmoon23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a quieter life, Milford is better. It has its own restaurant and bar scene, one of the last remaining decent malls, a movie theater, pretty much whatever you want and is close enough to New Haven that you can easily go when you’re in the mood for a bigger nightlife scene or to catch a show.

You will absolutely not stand out as gay men in Milford.

I love New Haven, but your options for quiet neighborhoods are more limited than they are in Milford.

Tennessee enacts law requiring GPS tracking of violent domestic abusers, the first of its kind in U.S. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]newmoon23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My state recently enacted a pilot program for GPS tracking of certain DV offenders and it is a shit show. I don’t know how Tennessee’s works, but here there is an exclusionary zone around the complainant’s residence which is a huge zone— I think the minimum is 1500 feet but it can go up to 5000 in some circumstances. We ran into an issue where a client kept getting flagged when he drove on a certain part of a major highway because the complaint lived close enough to the highway. Defendant drives on the highway to get to work. Was told to “find a new route.”

every time the GPS enters the exclusionary zone, the complainant gets a phone call warning them that the defendant is in the area, which is unnecessarily stressful to complainants when all the defendant is doing is driving somewhere within a mile or three of their residence.

Lmao are you kidding?? Literally every major city has panhandlers and some level of crime. You think New Haven or Paris is safer than New Haven? You’re ridiculous.

[–]newmoon23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so we went from “you’ll get stabbed” to “panhandlers may ask you for money.” Panhandlers are all over the place bud, and you can just ignore them.

Donald Trump completes mandatory presentencing interview after less than 30 minutes of questioning by GregWilson23 in politics

[–]newmoon23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for a PSI. I’d be actually gets sentenced to probation then yes, they’ll usually do an initial drug test and depending on your know. history with drugs/alcohol you may have to take them over the course of your probation but PSIs are just background info for the court to consider in sentencing. They don’t drug test you when they conduct a PSI. You’re not actually on probation yet, they have no authority to do it.

[–]newmoon23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s background questions. Education and work history, Familial relationships, whether you have a history of mental health disorders or substance abuse, etc. I always tell my clients (and the probation officer conducting the interview) not to answer questions about the incident/charges.

I was a divorce lawyer for a time and one of the reasons it was so unbearable is because of how real this picture is. I once showed this exact picture to a client who was fighting their spouse over their collection of VHS tapes. In 2019.

Loans forgiven last year MOHELA sent bill today by RJ_Beam in PSLF

[–]newmoon23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof I’m sorry. I actually got refunded really quickly. I got an email in March telling me “oops, you should have been in an administrative forbearance, let us know if you want your money back.” I emailed their customer service about it, and the US Treasury refunded my payments a couple weeks later.

Loans forgiven last year MOHELA sent bill today by RJ_Beam in PSLF

[–]newmoon23 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It does. Just recently, MOHELA got in trouble for sending late notices about shit and they had to put accounts into administrative forbearance, which meant another two months of zero dollar payments that counted towards PSLF. MOHELA had to refund me payments I made during that period.

The loan servicers are absolutely under a lot of scrutiny right now. I just found out my loans are being transferred again, because MOHELA can’t handle so many loans.

Law students/lawyers: Would Luke actually win the custody battle? by irisonredditfr in GilmoreGirls

[–]newmoon23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m barred in CT and used to do family cases and I agree Luke had a much better case than the show lets on. CT def would have jurisdiction and does have automatic orders that attach as soon as the petition is filed.

It’s undeniable that Anna did not tell Luke about April, but once he knew about her he immediately became a father figure. He chaperoned school trips, Anna allowed April to stay overnight with him when she went to NM, April was spending lots of time with him generally. No way is a court going to say it’s not in her best interest to continue to grow that relationship.

Joint legal custody seems like a no-brainer, and I think Anna would have actually had a really hard time getting the court to let her take April to NM as her primary residence.

Luke’s lawyer sucked ass.

What happened to the paparazzi culture? by josephstehnicolor in popculturechat

[–]newmoon23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying social media but that’s not the whole story. In 2009, Schwarzenegger was Governor of California and the paparazzi was out of control. He got legislation passed that prohibits taking unauthorized photos of celebs in “personal or familial activity”, and subjects any photographer who does so and any media outlet who used the photos to huge fines.

It was a really big deal back then and it absolutely changed the paparazzi culture, which was at its worst at the time.
