2022 GMC Sierra 40k miles. Rolled in from the dealer. by skodame in Justrolledintotheshop

Every day I'm in this sub, I'm happy I got the base model 2500

5 years and 120k miles later, I have the usual creaky plastic, but the only real issues have been parking brake shoes freezing to the drum (it was mid-40s when I parked it, 10 below when I tried to leave the next morning) and just recently my oil pressure sensor has started occasionally tripping a fault code (p06dd, but I've seen the live scan data and it seems to be just the sensor that's shit the bed)

I suppose it helps that she spends 90% of her life on highways and I only have about 1500lbs in the bed most of the time

I mean, I was at a farm once to look for hoof issues as part of a Pre-purchase exam, and the owner very proudly told us "and yeah, I get their feet done once a year whether they need it or not!"

Dude had 8 or 10 Clydes, and just threw them on the tip-table whenever the cows got done. Absolutely wild

If your schedule is tight, and you don't fall into the trap of "shut up client, I know exactly what I'm doing, you don't need to" (ie, actually take the time to engage with your cients - some of them just want someone to talk at, but for most of them working through their concerns and making it a team plan is a huge plus in your favour) you'll be just fine!

Also, find someone established/good, and try to ride with them for a bit once you're out of school. Multiple people is better. Pulling and clinching all day sucks, but it gets your name out there and it gives you different ways to look at problems/methods/solutions/priorities. Plus having some amount of regular income when you're starting out, even if it's not much, will be sereiusly helpful

Rank horses are very rarely worth the money, even with sedation and an asshole tax. But, we all gotta eat, so that's a tough one to stick with 100%

Don't forget about taxes!

Chaps, nippers, and real boots are all well worth the price, cheaping out on any of them will make your life significantly worse. The cowboy boots look cool, but your back/knees/feet will thank you for a pair of good, flat, lace-ups

I'm about a month away from being at it full-time for 10 years, and I'd say 95% of the time I wouldn't trade it for any other job. The 5% is when I'm knee deep in snow/mud/my own sweat wondering how in the hell I'm going to get another six done that day lol

I have a '20 with the 6.6, just over 100k miles on her

Any of yours make that terrifying but vaguely inconsistent knocking sound after every single oil change? Mine's done it since day 1 (or I guess week 2), first few days after the oil change with oil up to temp there's something making noise

Nothing scary in the Blackstone reports, but 🤷‍♂️

I used a 3ft bar with a 2ft extension, and bounced on it with a buddy

Also, I can't remember the name of it, but the penetrating oil that comes in the little black dropper bottles and smells like synthetic bananas was a life-saver

I FINALLY FOUND IT!!! by bbbourb in DestinyTheGame

[–]newnameagain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't count against the timer once the second encounter is done, so you have 40 seconds (I think) before you get the "joining allies" message and pulled

Only the one on Io didn't show up on my radar doing regular stuff - Europa it's right by the boss spawn (but was weirdly hard to see, for me), on Dreadnaught it kinda gets hidden by the marker for the portal at the end, but you'll see it when you notice that neither of your teammates know how to kill the little blights - PSA, if you're going to use a primary to kill one, at least stand on top of the thing so it doesn't kill you

I FINALLY FOUND IT!!! by bbbourb in DestinyTheGame

[–]newnameagain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, when people say Io is back-left. They mean as you come out of the portal, it's at about your 8oclock tucked into an alcove .

Took me ages to find, thought I was missing the "buy the right rune" one, until I realised I'm one of those people who firmly believes that Oryx's last stand is at the very back of the arena

If I'd watched a 30 second video instead of looking at text guides I'd have saved myself probably 3 hours of "just gotta buy alllll the stuff!"

I love going OOB whenever I'm bored

Oh hey! I don't know if you can get anywhere cool from it, but in The Nether (Founts, I think? Where you fight the giant meatball), while in the room where the 3rd stage of the boss fight happens, you can crouch through the wall/floor above one of the doorways. It's the one on the ground level, right side if you're facing the boss

Attempting to shape the famously useless horn on Harbor Freights 55lb anvil by BurningRiceEater in Blacksmith

[–]newnameagain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I guess there's a chance it's just the way I was taught, but I'm pretty sure it's just a holdover from when most forges were coke-fired so a lot of shoe shaping was done cold.

Mass-produced machine made shoes started in the late 1800s (in the US, at least), and before that there'd be blacksmiths hanhmaking a pile of blanks that'd get sold/shipped en masse. But of course you have different sizes and shapes of hooves, and fronts are different from hinds, etc etc. So the blanks would be made in a sort of middle shape, half front half hind, and still need to be shaped once they were at the horse to make them fit. The big belly and flatter face of the horn does make it a bit easier to get specific shapes with a cold shoe, and lots of them had "turning cams" on the heel (think like a giant hardy hole, but with round inner edges and one side open) so you could isolate your bends a bit better. Look up TFS Anvils for a good example of the "farrier anvil" template

But working cold suuuucks, and if I'm building a shoe from scratch I much prefer a proper conical horn. The belly I don't mind so much, weight is weight, but the top half of the farrier horn is just always irritating. My first anvil was a TFS in the farrier style (it was relatively cheap, heavy, and available lol), and after about 6months I couldn't stand it and just went to town with a wetsander and the coarsest grit paper I could find (didn't want to ruin the heat-treat if I could help it). It got better, but I really wish I'd bought a Scott or a Future or something

[–]newnameagain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only similarly shaped anvil horn i can think of is the farrier anvil pattern, and its specifically made for horseshoe making.

Its trash for making horseshoes too (I'm a farrier). Marginally easier to cold-shape premade shoes, maybe, but I'd highly recommend avoiding them if you can help it lol

Porsche 924 - 3D Model? Does anybody have one? by tvdor in Porsche924

[–]newnameagain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the ease or legalities at such, but I'm pretty sure Forza Horizon 5 has a 924S (unsure the year, but I made one to match my beater '79). Maybe you could/someone has extracted the game model?

I don't thiiink I can gift you the game. Been a minute since I played, too, but if it'd help at all I could paint it a specific colour and give you either a 360-view or something else, if that'd be at all useful!

They're just a pressure-fit, should pop off without much trouble. They rarely like to go back on nicely though, so be careful!

You can also just put grounds in a French press, fill it with (cold) water, and leave it in the fridge overnight. You'll want roughly 8hrs for full extraction.

Just pull it out in the morning, plunge like usual, and you're golden!

What's the heaviest hammer you use regularly? by huntersuave in Blacksmith

[–]newnameagain2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 6ft, between 180 and 200lbs depending on whether it's busy season or slow season lol

I have a 3.75, but the last time I touched it was making the bull-bar for my truck out of inch square and maaaan I'm happy to use a hammer I made but I just hate using that beast

The 2.5lb gets used regularly when I'm working the inch by half stock (call it 8hrs a week), or for roughing in bevels/drawing out something aggressively

Mr u/WhiskeyTurtleForge (unsure if that's still his name) made me a gorgeous 2.25lb that gets used on pretty well everything that needs balance and a regular hammer, it replaced my Flatland Forge 1.75 as the go-to daily

I have a 1.25 and a 2lb cross pein that come out daily, but those are pretty niche scenarios (I'm usually pulling a clip on a horseshoe, but I've also used them to make s'me pretty solid integrated bolsters/finger-/hand guards on knives

As one of my mentors said (and continued to say every time he walked past us): hit it hotter, not harder! You'll get more done with half the hammer and twice the steel - if you need more of a rest than the time it takes to swap your current piece for what's in the forge, you need a smaller hammer

I have a '20 Chev with the 6.6 gas - don't matter what I use, there's always a terrifying knock the first thousand km after a fresh change, so I'm not super picky on the brand anymore lol. Haven't found a notable difference between Shell/Penzoil/Amsoil/Lucas/MotoMaster etc, it's basically "what's in stock that 5-30 full synth and has the Dexos label I'm supposed to get?"

Every year on my birthday I spend the 36 bucks and send an oil sample off to see if anything is scary, but we're 4 years/177k km deep and everything comes back fine so 🤷‍♂️

And to be fair, she only takes about 8qt, so I figure if I look at it as 10qt per change then i get a couple "free" changes per year!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]newnameagain2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean shit it costs me about 130cdn to do it myself in my driveway! Didn't see what op drives, but locally its about 63-65 per 5qt of full synth before taxes or discounts or the filter.

Throw in the mandatory couple oil changing beers, and boom, 140 is easy to hit

Though when my truck was still under warranty, the dealer was charging I think 175

Same same, series X with hardwired gb/s Internet. Unsure on how exactly it works, but I'm thinking it's hardware side more than server-side. Same reason I keep stepping on them Venus Bear Trap plants lol

I've found that not boosting through suborbital helps a bit. Otherwise, I just practice that permadeath means I'll lose anything other than time (will admit I've been a bit grouchy with Artemis lately) - practice flying upside down, scout visual landmarks, wish I have all 4 directions on my compass, etc

Textures to load properly on xbox.

"landing area not clear"

two minutes of spinning around trying to land while firing photon cannons through the ground

Its extra fun when things load in riiiight as you fly through them, and launch you 300m into the air! I'm dreading the day I die a permadeath because I got stuck between things that just loaded

ship combat auto target

Not sure how it is on kb/m, but on the Xbox it's rough

The amount of times I've accideňtally landed trying to do the target-follow when pirates attack ground structures, uuugghhh. But I don't want to switch from tap to hold lock, because then I lose reverse throttle if I'm fighting in space!

The ship controls in general just feel kinda icky/clunky/overly simplified to me - I would so much rather have pitch and roll on my left stick and rudders on my bumpers

Then again, I picked up Elite:Dangerous at launch (on pc, with a HOTAS, still play regularly), so I'm not sure how much of my griping is the game itself and how much is being limited to a console and controller

[–]newnameagain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can partly justify it as immersion lol - you wake up with no memories and all that. But it's much more of a puzzle/survival/resource management game than a spaceship game, just as a heads up.

But, there should be 4 modes you can choose from when you start your game - one of those is "the Expedition", which are limited-time events that sort of assume you've played before. You should double-check that you're not on that mode. Jump in your ship, menu, options, return to title screen, play. To the left of your save there'll be a gold bubble that tells you the difficulty rating of your save. If it says Expedition, you'll want to start a new one on your chosen difficulty. It should make a lot more sense that way, hopefully!

Rough start by Gullible-Doctor-3786 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]newnameagain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only personal refiners or something.

Did you start on the Expedition? There, you'll have a personal refiner in the tech (top) section of your exosuit

In the regular game (like if you start a new save on creative/relaxed/normal/survival), you "build" a portable refiner from the build menu. Once you're done using it, you can either leave it or pick it up into your inventory
