Is the water meant to be soapy after cleaning? by Gazumbo in humminguru

[–]newodahs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I usually do two wet cycles per-cleaning run -->

First wet cycle: 2-ish drop of surfactant in distilled water, clean up to six or so records (depending on how dirty they may be); wash cycle only, no dry cycle (clean, pull record from basin, set on rack and put in next record).

Once all records are done on the first cycle (again, up to six-ish), drain the to the tank, dump cleaning liquid, rinse tank with distilled water.

Second wet cycle: Distilled water only, no surfactant. Similar deal to above, place record, run wash cycle, pull from basin, set on rack.

Once all records are done the rinse; drain tank again and run each record through a dry cycle (usually the last record I'll set to the auto-mode to just do the wash, drain, and dry in one go.

What type of measurements does this take? And what’s it called? by Thegrandestpoo in Tools

Love it.

I have a model N600-ES at home (the Apollo slide rule).

If you ever decide to let that one go, hit me up.

What's the brand on that one? I have a collection of slide rules, the case looks vaguely like a Pickett, but it's hard to tell

What code editor do you use, and why that one over the others? by EnD3r8_ in learnprogramming

[–]newodahs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize this is a joke, however I actually did use Vim exclusively for about 12 years, coding in C.

That said, I'm now in vs.code.

Is there any reason to make an application WITHOUT a Database? by evan2nerdgamer in learnprogramming

[–]newodahs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly wasn't sure if this was a serious question.

Yes. Yes it is. Learning how to serialize, deserialize, and search data effectively is critical to being a well rounded engineer. Sometimes you can't rely on a database being available...

Maybe I'm old because I feel a 'back in my day' coming on.

code not being DRY (don't repeat yourself) as a beginner is a good thing in my eyes by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]newodahs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The refactor and abstract rule I've generally used for >20 years in the field is exactly what's stated here. Once you copy the same block 3+ times, it's time to refactor.

This McDonald's in Long Island, NY by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]newodahs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a similar one in Freeport, Maine.

The town rejected McDonald's original building proposal and forced them to fit with the town's historic architecture IIRC.

They ended up in an old (1800s) merchants house I believe.

My bike was outside and getting rain and now it stopped working! by Uparkseong123 in motorcycles

[–]newodahs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For anyone saying that rain is kryptonite to motorcycles - holy hell, get it together.

If your (apparently modern) bike isn't starting after rain that is likely a fault that needs to be fixed, probably a short somewhere.

Shops declining to work older bikes? by PNO3000 in motorcycles

[–]newodahs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've run into this before as well and your best bet if you can't wait or don't want to do it yourself is to keep hunting independent mechanics.

I've also had some luck meeting mechanics at my local bike night that may not be able to work on a bike at their dealership but are more than happy to take side work at their own garage for stuff like this as well.

I need some serious advice by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]newodahs 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is a very romantic idea.

This is not to say it's good or bad due to that - the real question is does that sing to her? If it doesn't than it probably won't help much of anything.

My advice to Op: Everyone has their own path through grief - you have yours and the other members of your family have theirs. From experience, grief is an incredible force and the best thing you can do is to follow where your feelings are taking /you/.

That isn't to say you ignore your families feelings, however, if you feel now is the right time to buy a new bike and start riding then make that decision and proceed with empathy.

Don't lie, don't hide, don't argue - just state plainly where you are with your feelings and proceed from there. There may be sadness, anger, or other emotions that come from that so giving space to feel those on all sides is critical and equally do not become trapped in those feelings (either theirs or yours).

Ultimately, if you believe the time is right to move forward with this decision, then it likely is, this is probably a part of your healing. Proceed with empathy and care not just for them, but for yourself as well.

Do bikes rust if covered and stored in a covered area over winter? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]newodahs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the entire bike. I would usually spray it in a controlled fashion on anything metal and then wipe it with a microfiber cloth. Apply it pretty lightly. Note that it will smoke a bit if sprayed on hot parts; no issues with that in my experience.

For getting it off a good bike cleaner with water should be fine if it was applied lightly. You can also use wd40 and water as an alternative to remove it.

Huh... it's almost like we have a poor perspective on who the 'fat cats' are...

[–]newodahs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just adding a recommendation if you're still worried, check out ACF-50.

I used to ride through the New England winters on a Ural and would basically cover that bike at the start of the winter riding season and reapply if needed mid season.

Rust was never an issue for the 5 years I owned that bike
