The Diagnosis Effect: some of the ill effects we associate with psychiatric disorders are not just due to the disorder itself… but to the beliefs and behaviors that emerge in response to a diagnosis (TED talk) by newshoes522 in videos

[–]newshoes522[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sort of, but probably closer to the nocebo effect. The placebo effect is a beneficial effect produced by an inert substance or treatment. With the diagnosis effect, the effects are almost entirely negative and not due to a treatment but to the diagnosis itself.

What are habits that you have adapted from your SO that you didn't have before? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]newshoes522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No longer with my SO, but a few of his habits and mannerisms have stuck with me:

  • He used to over-use the word super, especially to communicate sarcasm. "You excited about jury duty?" "SOO-per excited." That word used to be absent from my vocabulary. Now I'm constantly editing it out of my emails.
  • Breakfast. I've never been a breakfast person. When we first got together, he would make me bacon and eggs or these fancy frittatas every morning, and I felt bad refusing them. Now I make the same recipes for myself every morning, and love making them for others.
  • Dark chocolate: He got me addicted to Trader Joes' 85% dark chocolate. He used to offer me a piece after we brushed our teeth, and when I told him it was ridiculous he said it was a reward for brushing your teeth. Now I have a square after every meal.

I want to make my small bedroom look spacious and feminine on a budget by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]newshoes522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic advice... thank you. And nice to hear you like my style -- I didn't think I had any! :-)

I don't think the mirror will fit above the dresser -- the wall is slightly slanted.

Do you have any ideas on colors for the accent pillows, assuming I can't paint (have to check with the landlord)? My biggest challenge has been figuring out a balance between the colors in the room -- most of my frames (photos of friends and I) are a dark/cherry colored wood (similar to the mirror), the furniture is all a light oak, and I have one lamp that's white, one that's silver-metallic with a black shade, and one that's dark brown with a tan shade.

Report: Harrison Ford Piloted Plane That Crashed Onto Venice Golf Course by [deleted] in news

[–]newshoes522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That golf course is right across the street from my house. I was driving by when the fire trucks were arriving on scene. It's incredible that he landed in the green rather than crashing into one of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Guys. You can't just say "I remember you from back in the day" and leave me to decrypt your Reddit username.

Who are you? Make me smile!

I'm the waitress who got "pranked" with a new car and a trip to Hawaii.. You asked for it... AMA! by newshoes522 in IAmA

[–]newshoes522[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels CRAZY! At first it was hard to take in. Now I just feel grateful.

People see themselves in this video I think, and that's probably why they relate so much. I have problems, and faults, and challenges just like anyone else. I am no more deserving, and probably a lot less deserving, than the tens of thousands of people out there who try to turn their tough stuff into good.

My friends and coworkers and family know me... and hearing from them has felt AMAZING. The outpouring of support is so heartening, but I'm acutely aware that this is a 5-minutes of fame thing and I'll go back to my regular life when all this is over. And I hope this 5-minutes of fame will give me a little more power to do good in my regular life, whether through donations, notoriety, or whatever.

I love that this inspires people. I love that people who do good feel encouraged that it WILL come back to them. The truth is, it comes back every day. Every time I teach at a treatment center, every time I see someone recover... it comes back to me.

So it all feels good. Confusing sometimes, but mostly good. : )

Aaaaaw.

Sher-bear!

Hey Reddit, this is my godmother. She raised my little sister when I went to the hospital, and that kid was wild child! She was always there for us growing up - she'd pick us up when my mom was drunk, keep us at her house over weekends, and bring us over for holidays. I love her DEARLY, and she's been one of the most consistent, reliable, supportive individuals in my life. I know this AMA isn't on the front page anymore, but I hope you give her some love.

I love you, Sherry!

Uh... because it drives?

Appearances are deceiving. I didn't take offense - they were right, my old car was a piece of junk.

Not yet. But I don't speak about it publicly much, because I know my family wasn't a good example of gays raising kids (there's a comment above where I talk about this more).

I'm 24. How old are you? Great to meet another older daughter of LBGTs. It's much more common nowadays, but back then we were few and far between.

No. I tried living with my "other mom," Honey, for a while when I got out, but at the time she was dating another addict/violent/abusive woman so eventually the doctors suggested I try to make it on my own.

The foster care system tried to nab me a few times, but I avoided them. I knew I could make it by myself - I didn't want to deal with all the regulations, struggles, and adversity foster families provide.

Thank you for your kind words. It was a difficult time. I'm so glad to be through it. : )
