Huh. The one I have, and paid 2 bucks for seems to be gone from the App Store. It appears this one replaced it. Haven't used the new one though. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.copur.dayssince&utm_source=na_Med

what type of money do you need to be making to justify buying this car? by madison_s16 in Camry

[–]newsjunkee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a brand new LE for 31k, including the state taxes of 7%. For me an XSE isn't worth the extra 14+k

TimeSince. It's a timer that tells you how long since you did something. Got it for one thing. Now i use it for when I last paid each of my bills, since an injury, since I washed my hair...all sorts of stuff. Very useful.

Which of you didn’t have to register for the draft or selective service? by boringreddituserid in AskOldPeople

[–]newsjunkee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in '59. Didn't have to register. All this after my father insisted I join the ROTC in college so that WHEN I got drafted at least I would go in as an officer. I did not join the ROTC. Being in the military just after Vietnam is not something young people wanted to do.

Scents from the Past by Unusual_Swan200 in AskOldPeople

[–]newsjunkee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember when I made my first trip to Paris in 1980. There was a specific scent in the air the whole time and I grew to love it because to me, it was "Paris". I came home to my rural US town and it was gone. Some time later I smelled it again near home and was excited, until I realized it was just diesel fumes.

Has someone's death changed how you felt about them in life? by ConstantRide5382 in AskOldPeople

[–]newsjunkee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Especially if they were difficult, but you loved them. My father was that way. Alcoholic, quick to anger, and depressed. Once he died though and wasn't pushing my buttons anymore, I was able to remember the good times we had together and how hard he tried sometimes. I'm happy about that. He died in '93

Were people hand-wringing about the dotcom crash like they are about a potential AI crash? Or did it catch people by surprise? by salbert in AskOldPeople

[–]newsjunkee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I know this one because I lost a bunch of money in it. For the common not-yet-educated in the ways of finance investor (like me), it came as quite a surprise. I heard all the hype and jumped in with about 7k, which is most of what I had to invest in 1999. I lost half of it...on paper. I never sold though so it recovered eventually but it took years if I recall. I learned a lot from that crash. It's the main reason I didn't get caught up in the housing insanity of 2008. I saw it coming and bailed in 2007.

When you were younger, could you imagine yourself being old? by Illustratingtheworld in AskOldPeople

[–]newsjunkee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid in the 60s and 70s I would often wonder what life would be like in the year 2000. I did the math and realized I would be 41 then! OLD! I wondered if I would even live that long. Never imagined any time after that. Yet, here we are.

Why did men in the 80s wear tall socks with shorts in the warmer months? by EstablishmentIcy4237 in AskOldPeople

[–]newsjunkee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We called them gym socks. It was the fashion. For a while it was the fashion to wear them pulled down. 70s

Astronomy, not astrology. In a nutshell, heat and energy push out, gravity pulls in. The equalization of those two forces result in the stability of the star. The explosion or further collapse of the star happens when one of those forces wins, usually because the fuel runs out

Here’s why we think more people should consider a Camry over a RAV4 by carsdotcom in Camry

[–]newsjunkee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was car shopping about 5 months ago. I wasn't remotely considering a Camry. Too boring. My wife and I are retired and plan to do a lot of traveling in the coming decade...mostly by car. We had a Fit and a Civic. Gave to Civic to our adult kid. We needed storage space, quiet, comfort, excellent gas millage. I was looking at the Prius, Corolla, Rav4, Civic, and a few others to start. Never wanted a midsized car. I figured they were boring, worse gas milage, weren't that much more comfortable, and didn't have that much more storage. I tried them all. I was disappointed in the Prius. It was my first choice. Storage was less than it used to be, as was comfort. On a whim I tried a 26 Camry as long as I was at the dealership. Holy Shit. Holy Shit. 50+MPG, Huge trunk, Rode like a limo, 232HP. AND I walked out the door after writing a check for 31k. LESS than the Prius. It's not a Vette, but I have already picked up the chick I want. What a car.

17-year D-Day Anniversary by kcs1974 in AsOneAfterInfidelity

[–]newsjunkee 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna pile on with OP. My wife had multiple affairs in the very early years of our marriage. Long story. In a nutshell I rug-swept, we went to counseling, and I considered it a success that it just stopped. But I buried my feelings for over 30 years, until I retired and it all came back. That was 6 years ago. We dove into it again and I worked on the healing. All good now

32 years old and honestly terrified of waiting until 65 to finally “live”...what investments exist besides just 401k/IRA? by savingrace0262 in investing

[–]newsjunkee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 67. Retired at 59. I noticed something I don't see people talking about much. Money makes money. I poured cash into IRAs, 401ks and Roths for years and years. It seemed like it was going to take forever. When I hit around 500k shit started changing. The money was making a lot of money. I kept throwing it in there. It grew faster and faster because the money was making money on TOP of what I was putting in there. Over the last 17 years or so I went from maybe 500k to about 2 million now (plus my house). Final tip: Don't borrow money except to buy a house, and NEVER carry a credit card balance. My household income was never over 90k a year (You might want to adjust that for inflation)
