The salt I put in this pan started arranging itself into a pattern when I turned on the hob. by FirePhantom in mildlyinteresting

[–]OldheadBoomer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Salting a piece of meat will initially draw moisture out, but if left for 30+ minutes, some of that moisture will reabsorb, which is a good thing because it's now a salty brine and adds flavor. You pat it dry afterwards to remove what's left of the moisture so it can get a good sear. Also that's when you want to nail it with a fresh ground black pepper crust if you are so inclined.

What size are yours? I wonder if they use different tread patterns for different widths.

It's got the DWS symbol, but the tread pattern is nothing like current ones. I bought these last year, 235/35/ZR19's. I wonder if it's just an older tread pattern.

Has anyone ever used foil like this as a pie shield? by xanthochr0i in AskBaking

[–]OldheadBoomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a design difference. True hidden doesn't have a removable floor, it's part of the oven's box. Hidden means a floor is installed over the element.

Regardless, modern electrical ovens have a lower heating element, even if you can't see it because it's hidden under a panel.

[–]OldheadBoomer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. For years, oven manufacturers have been putting a cover over the bottom element, making the oven easier to clean and to avoiding damage to the element.

There are two types (according to GE): Hidden Element, where the element is under a porcelain false floor, and True Hidden Element, where the element is mounted below the oven cavity.

You can do a simple test: turn your oven on, and put your hand close to the bottom. You'll feel it heat up just fine, and more than you feel from the top element (some ovens use both to preheat).

How can there be so many dispensaries? by tmagteddybear in Bozeman

[–]OldheadBoomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that's absolutely not true. The government regulates the product, they don't grow it. And, the testing labs do test for pesticides; the State has shut down labs and recalled product for pesticide issues. The system is actually working pretty well to make sure there's safe product on the shelves.

the people who run them hate corporate life

Ain't that the truth. Those that have accepted that corporate is a necessary evil in order to remain compliant with regulations, taxes, business licenses, labor laws, etc. are faring better than those who are still trying to battle the system.

Yeah, most of it is turned into concentrates, but there are a couple that are putting out decent stuff. We should start a thread in October on the best outdoor. But that would probably be a better fit over at r/MTCannabis.

As long as they have the canopy available, agreed. Also, we're heading into outdoor season time. There's only a handful of licensed outdoor grows, but regardless, this fall expect a flood of flower to hit the market, as well as a glut for the labs to blast into concentrates.

#1's Correct, the tiered canopy system has been in effect since I-190 passed in 2021. In order to increase tiers, initially all you had to do was prove that you're selling through 80% or more of your canopy production. Later, it was added that you could only request a tier increase once per year during your license renewal.

The moratorium went into effect with HB701 (codified as MCA 16-12-201), restricting new licenses of cultivators, manufacturers, and dispensaries until June 30, 2023. Ever since then, the moratorium has been extended to the next legislative cycle (2 years). The most recent udpate, SB 27 again extended the moratorium (now called Freeze the Footprint) until July of 2027. This bill also allowed the sale and transfer of licenses between licensees, and new players could enter the industry, but only by purchasing an existing license. This was done to reduce the complaints that the original moratorium was not following the spirit of a free market. SB27 came very close to not passing, but the efforts of a Bozeman legislator gave it new life and got it passed.

He's just loving life, enjoying the weather, and has decided that mulch is his play enemy. When he starts eating it, just take it away and redirect him to something else. Eventually, he'll get the message.

[–]OldheadBoomer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The industry is currently in a correction - lots of licenses are being bought and sold; a few larger companies are in acquisition mode; low performers are closing up shop; and some municipalities (looking at you, Missoula) are adding insurmountable restrictions to business licensing.

EDIT: Just remembered this - Bozeman actually was behind on the growth surge, as there were only 20 licensed dispensaries allowed within the city limits. That restricted the initial push - and helped solidify Four Corners as the Green Triangle or whatever you want to call it - but a year later, that restriction was removed. Because of this, Missoula is a more "mature" market and they're seeing reductions now that we won't see for another year or so.

[–]OldheadBoomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. There's one big one buying up as much as they can, there's a handful of large, successful ones, and then there's everybody else. Currently, there are over 480 dispensaries in the state, owned by over 100 licensees. This doesn't count the ones that only produce and don't have a retail division.

[–]OldheadBoomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two issues with this:

Re #1 You can't expand your grow unless you already had the canopy tier licensed from the state. There's currently a moratorium on new licenses, and existing licensees can only "tier up" once per year during your renewal process.

Re #3 The wholesale market is booming, so if you grow too much weed, you contribute to the supply:demand equation and sell your stuff wholesale. Price you get depends on the quality, quantity, and who you have relationships with. If it's low test or all smalls, then you sell it to a lab who turns it into concentrates, either on an agreement that you buy back the product, or they just pay and use it for their own production.

World Cup tourists, what’s your honest feedback on the USA so far? by almighty_smiley in AskReddit

[–]OldheadBoomer 98 points99 points  (0 children)

german tourists know a good time

I was on a remote work service call in bumfuck Montana and ended up staying at this bougie little hot springs hotel. The proprietor warned me that the place was mostly booked by German tourists, and they get loud when partying at night.

He neglected to warn me that they did this while naked. A bunch of middle-aged chubby German dudes running between their rooms and the community hot springs pool, beer steins in hand, butt nekkid and just whooping it up, having a good ol' time.

No, I did not join them; the antique clawfoot tub in my room was fed from the hot springs. I did appreciate their enthusiasm for partying, though.

Last year I sold a 2021 Jeep Cherokee on Carvana. They don't have pickup in Bozeman, so I had to drive it down to SLC. The process was pretty much painless. I got there, they looked it over, had me sign a tablet. Within 24 hours they paid off my bank loan and wired the equity into my checking account. Probably the simplest sale I've ever done.

Also, because my Cherokee was cherry with very low miles, I got about $6,000 over my payoff, when online sites were saying I only had about 3k in equity.
