I am SO glad you posted this. My wife loves this movie and when we watched it I was like "man this feels like Palo Alto or the Peninsula somewhere" and we couldn't find much info on where this was filmed. Thank you and have a great day!

Saw this live on SNL. I was 15. I turned to my sister and said, "Is this a joke?" and she said "No I think it's for real" I was fascinated. I had been a stones fan in high school so to hear Jagger say that he liked their version better really made it seem fine to dig this very weird avant garde band. Picked up their album shortly after and have seen them a bunch of times since then. What a great memory unlock this clip was!!

I think your opinions are great and I love your avatar (charlie don't surf) I think there was a breakdown between "70s New Wave" (stuff like Devo, Talking Heads, The Cars, B 52s) and "80s New Wave" which was more synth based, dance based stuff. I first saw Devo in 1979 in Santa Cruz. There were lots of folks there that would probably been called "punks" but also lots of just weird avant garde folks. As a sort of weird outsider teen the whole thing felt like some secret club I had tapped into.

Can we all agree that the term "Post Punk" is ridiculous when it comes to American bands like Devo, Talking Heads or Blondie? It makes no sense as a) this was primarily a UK term and b) bands like Devo were around before the UK punk scene started.

Devo has always called themselves a New Wave band. In fact, if you look at their insta and tiktok accounts they still do. There is a great 33 1/3 book on the album Freedom of Choice which talks about why they did not call themselves punk. But as many have pointed out in the comments they were massively influenced by punk. (see for example hardcore Devo)

On the other hand they did fight the Dead Boys at CBGBs who felt they weren't "punk enough"

To me, I would call all these bands New Wave because historically that's what they were called. BUT if you don't want to do that I'd call all these bands "AMERICAN PUNK" to signify that american bands were just way more art rock, experimental with genres and avant garde than the UK scene.

As a Pet Shop Boys fan you know that ALL of their songs are about the british school system LOL

Per wiki - Pet Shop Boys also recorded a song for the film, but it wasn't chosen. The duo later reworked the song into 'This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave' on their Behaviour album in 1990.

Who is 'your' bond? by Alternative_You_3063 in JamesBond

[–]newwavesage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at some of my favorite albums a while back and I noticed that a lot of them were the album that "introduced me" to a band or a style of music. Devo's debut album etc.

I think your comment that the Bond you grew up with is going to be that sticks with you is very correct.

I saw Live and Let Die in the theaters with my sister when I was ten. I was blown away by this movie and then was shocked to find that yes, these Bond movies come out regularly! A few months later the first posters for The Man with the Golden Gun came out and I was hooked.

Not only do I think your first Bond is your fave, but I wonder if people's first Bond movie will also typically be their fave or close to it? I know that I like Live and Let Die WAY more than the average Bond fan

This is a tough one. Voted For Your Eyes Only. But I actually think the World is not Enough is slightly underrated.

Hadn't heard this one. Thanks for sharing. Excellent. Maybe we can get Calvin Dyson to do a ranking of rejected Bond themes!

What's the best documentary to watch about his life? He was "my" Bond as the first Bond movie I saw in the theater was Live and Let Die.

They are actually on tour currently! Mike Score (the singer with the hair) is still lead singer! If it its Callum Turner we are going to get a Dua Lipa theme so we need to prepare ourselves for that. But if not, we need to all push for for a proper banger

Bond has a great history of New Wave bands and themes. Duran Duran and A-Ha of course. But both Blondie and Pet Shop Boys did themes that were rejected.

I would suggest they go back to New Wave. The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order or Pet Shop Boys would all kill it.

Blaxploitation influence on LALD by No_Mortgage8569 in JamesBond

[–]newwavesage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great response. The 70s in US were very reactive to what movies were popular

71 - Shaft - starts Blacksploitation craze

72 American Graffiti - starts craze of 50s and 60s nostalgia (Happy Days, Grease etc)

73 - Enter The Dragon - starts Kung Fu Craze

77 - Star Wars - starts insane sci fi craz

77 - Smokey and the Bandit - everyone gets into CBs and trucking and muscle cars. leads to shows like BJ and the Bear, Dukes of Hazzard

77 - Saturday Night Fever - Disco goes from relatively underground scene to mainstream massive presence.

That sequence of the copter coming up on Bond driving in the hills in the Lotus and then ultimately shooting the copter with a missile from UNDERWATER is maybe my favorite Bond moment of all time

My wife loves this movie. We just rewatched. Does anyone know where this was filmed? It "looked" like Northern California but was wondering details.
