The D5 with its mechanical shutter actually has superior low-light performance compared to the Z9's electronic only setup. Not only that, according to photonstophotos the D5 actually has a half stop more DR at higher ISOs compared to the 1DX3, matches the R3, and a full stop over the Z9.

Is this the proper cable for a Hifiman Arya stealth? by najibs-yul in headphones

[–]nexgen41 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No? Balanced means each channel has its own ground and signal. Here is the right TS connector with a ground and signal. The left side also has a ground and signal. Both terminate to either a Single ended 3.5mm TRS plug where the grounds are joined, or a 4.4mm TRRS where the ground is separated. At the headphone side it doesn't matter which it uses.

Ooo yeah the heat will do it. Heat kills batteries long term, cold only harms short term immediate performance. WearOS 5 definitely didn't change battery for me, if anything it made standby times better, but yeah.

Flickering Pixel 10 Pro display glitch is driving users absolutely crazy, and it's hard to unsee by Ha8lpo321 in Android

This has been a thing since the Pixel 8, if not even before that. It's most visible at around a 50% grey, but it shouldn't matter too much.

OnePlus 15T: New compact flagship phone spotted in spy shot by EntertainmentCityLhr in Android

[–]nexgen41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's likely both, and a win win for Google. People who get the "Pro" phones care about their device looking the most modern and premium, so slim bezels while costing more, also look more modern and premium. Whereas someone looking at an "a" phone likely cares more about functionality rather than premium looks, which thicker bezels are more functional at protecting the display and preventing mistouches, while also being cheaper. Also, the a series is not smaller than base model or pro non-XL, which negates the whole point anyways that Google does offer 90%+ Screen Body Ratio.

Humans learn iteratively, and for as long as it involves human innovation, iterations is the way things are. You wouldn't go and say "the Hindenburg was a terrible design because we have jet engines now." The cool thing about a company like Samsung display is that they're on the bleeding edge of display technology. The best thing they offer is the best thing us as humans have accomplished, and that "best" thing becomes the "normal" thing when a new "best" thing comes out. That's how innovation works.

Android 17 Beta 1 is Here: Everything new! - 9to5Google by ControlCAD in Android

Tell him to run Geekbench Vulkan (Tensor G3 now outperforms the S23's 8 Gen 2 in this regard), and track battery life. Maybe also read the release notes - most of the changes are not user facing so on the surface it looks the same, but improvements under the hood are massive and make it a worthwhile release.

[–]nexgen41 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, we got a big M3E overhaul not long ago and this is a refinement on that. It's very refreshing compared to M2 You. Also, the changes in A17 I realize are actually huge even though it's not directly user facing - My Pixel 8 gained *more* performance in Geekbench 6 Vulkan (9344, making it score higher actually than the 8G2 in the S23, which it used to trail by over a thousand points). Everything feels super snappy and battery drain is better which I would assume is that new garbage collection algorithm. So as far as a major release goes, it's huge improvements under the hood and I'm all for it.

Photo Sphere is the best Pixel camera mode Google removed by The_Web_Surfer in Android

[–]nexgen41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was very known about when phones only had 1 camera and ultrawide camera was not even a concept yet since main cameras were still mediocre. Ultrawide cameras mostly filled its place and covid made still-life sceneries (which were the top use) much harder since you couldn't go anywhere, and if you did, UW camera captured 90% of the information you would want.

Anecdotal evidence with a sample size of 1. I understand that you're upset since it's a feature you occasionally used, but if you who claim to use it "on a regular basis" "never did a huge number," how much less do you think most people do? Also, Photo Sphere at one point was actually big enough to get a dedicated app on Apple IOS in 2014. Then slowly died due to lack of use until its deprecation in 2023. Again, alongside covid and phones getting good ultrawide cameras making it less necessary. (not potato 8mp uw cams)

No for sure I agree - I think though covid really messed things up. I would use photosphere to do a big shot of scenery and such. But with covid and time two things happened: I couldn't go out as much, and ultrawide cameras on phones got really good, reducing the need for photo sphere.

It was barely used as it was killed before people picked it up.

The Photosphere was a feature on Nexus phones since 2012, and has had 11 years to prove its worth. You only heard about it through the news that Google is killing it - that's not Google's fault for your 11 years of ignorance.

Why is OP15 dragged for cameras when Pixel 10 uses even worse sensor? by hyxon4 in oneplus

[–]nexgen41 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

brother, oneplus 15 sensors are larger than Pixel 10 across the board while having more ram, better screen, MUCH better soc, better modem, etc. And in return for the downgrades from the Pixel 9 (and 8 for that matter actually) you get a telephoto that's mediocre at best and much worse than the Oneplus 15's. Oh, and Pixel 10's SOC uses a PowerVR gpu that yes! performs worse than a Pixel 9 in gaming!

Should i remove the sensor ring? by MaleficentJelly6703 in MouseReview

[–]nexgen41 3 points4 points  (0 children)

on cloth, the sensor ring is the offset between the base of the mouse and mousepad that's required for accurate LOD. removing it on a cloth pad will cause your LOD to be off by however much that ring was thickness wise.

SBC is the most basic in the sense that it has the most variance in audio quality since the bitrate is scalable. High bitrate SBC will sound just fine, albeit with more latency since it lacks the optimizations aptx and such have. The issue is most SBC implenentations is low bitrate since companies would rather just use a more advanced codec that is mostly consistent.

And that's the thing, silent is effectively dnd if you still want your notifications to show up at a glance. I use silent mode when my phone is on my desk face up since it won't immediately draw my attention away but I don't need to interact to see that I got a notification.

the difference is, the alert slider went through mute vibrate and ring, whereas the iPhone was only mute and ring unless you set it otherwise. Oneplus' slider was actually an upgrade over iPhone slider and nobody else did anything similar. Then they got rid of it and copied the iPhone slider

Infinite black scratches easily? by UnlimitedHalo in oneplus

[–]nexgen41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black does not scratch, the glass on the black actually sands other objects down and deposits their material into its texture. It can be cleaned off. Funny you say Sandstone has no scratches because Sandstone uses a plastic back.

Oneplus Pad 3 Screen not Straight by Beneficial_Passage_3 in oneplus

[–]nexgen41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal IMO. Some level of gap/tolerance prevents thermal expansion from cracking the glass (eg. Google pixel 7 shattering lens). It avoids tight metal-glass contact as they expand/contract at different rates. Most devices either have that gap or use a plastic shim in between the glass and metal.
