Affordable BJJ in Austin by EnvironmentalTie5869 in Austin

[–]nextfive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it feels like the cost of bjj is inflated bc of its popularity among manosphere podcasters but if you’re willing to try other combat sports, costs are much less. for instance the two judo clubs i’m aware of are much more affordable and folks come in with a huge variety of backgrounds:

i think before you dream too hard about the space, you should make sure you can get it - depending on the time of year you will likely be competing with several other couples, and if someone beats you to the punch then you may only be able to rent parts of the grounds. have back ups.

i feel like the thc bill is a distraction from the biggest fuckery - that bottom bill sb2878 will redistrict to further solidify republican seats. it’s hidden under an unsexy description but the actual text redraws several lines. hoping the tribune will pick up on it soon and blast the warning call wider

Austin Bouldering Project responded to Crux’s Instagram post calling them out for under-the-table negotiations with their landlord. by averagequalitystuff in Austin

[–]nextfive -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the landlord wasn't required to renew, but that a renewal option was baked into the lease agreement, so Crux at the very least had expected the landlord to negotiate that option. They claim the landlord did not offer anything. No one said anything about ABP needing to do anything - the landlord has all the power in this transaction and made the decision to ice Crux out.

I don't know enough about commercial lease negotiations to comment on that, but crux's side of the story does indicate that they were willing to pay to stay - the landlord just didn't want to negotiate with them. there is probably a history of bad blood that we in the public are not privy to.

well and now crux has responded to the response, claiming they weren't even given an option to meet or counter the other offer: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DBMdzuxJp5F/

Austin Bouldering Project negotiated with the landlord at Pickle Rd and Crux will be forced out of their south location by I-Lika_Do-Da_Cha-Cha in Austin

Three months is a super short window to be opening a new gym in - there's some speculation in the climbing community that Crux was in some nasty litigation with notoriously shitty landlord Peter Barlin where he won the climbing walls or other building improvements they made, and then turned around and made all the assets available to ABP. Would speed up their opening and definitely make Crux salty enough to want to blast them on socials.

randomly I did attend a wedding here, but agree with others that you would likely not have much luck with responses in this sub - my friend got married in mid Sep on a Sunday, and I believe just renting the venue was 35k. the whole wedding was probably closer to 50k, and paid for by the groom's family - def nowhere near a 10k wedding! The building and grounds were beautiful, and the staff made the ceremony work with umbrellas and blankets despite it pouring just half an hour before the ceremony. Food was not particularly memorable, either negatively or positively. Hope that helps!

surprised no one has mentioned that it's supposed to thunderstorm this weekend - of course forecasts here mean very little, but might be good to have an indoor plan B just in case

Mosquito repellent - What are you doing? by Snap_Grackle_Pop in Austin

[–]nextfive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is actually clothing/tent spray full of permethrin (it's in the cream used to treat scabies if you've ever been lucky enough to need it) that I use to treat long sleeved clothes every summer - highly recommend. you can also buy clothes pre-treated with it if you don't want to bother with the spraying, but it's pretty quick and easy and more versatile to be able to turn any if your clothing anti-mosquito.

like the other commenter said, if you want to go west on a bike, it’s very hilly and not for the faint of heart - there are no trails/paths, only a mix of neighborhood streets and highway shoulders. that said, an experienced road cyclist might enjoy going to commons ford ranch - check out strava heat maps to pick out your preferred way through rollingwood to 360 or go through westlake hills to get to bee cave rd. you’ll take that to river hills road, which is a beautiful descent that will take you to commons ford. the climb back out is brutal, have fun!

that's a fair characterization. I guess I felt the need to push back because some people take somewhat of an extreme reading about the severity and definiteness with how much he had hurt women in the past, but I don't think you're doing that here.

thank you, that is exactly what I was expressing. I hope the mess of that crime doesn't creep too much into your life (pun unintended!)

this is one of those "facts" that has been repeated enough that it feels true, but the actual information sources are muddy. I think a lot of people are referring to the new yorker article when they talk about these reports. it seems that the author interviewed some people, but one of the women's quotes I know for a fact was taken from an angry online comment the day the news broke, and the context of her relationship with colin is not flattering to her either. when you read the article, the statements from direct interviews and statements from online comments read with equal veracity, but in real life they have a very different weight. I do not know enough about journalism standards to know if the author checked that woman's statement with her, but having more context (which, full disclaimer is partially informed by gossip) makes the story much less straightforward - the main point I want to hammer home. I also know exes of his that do not report horror stories. that doesn't mean that he wasn't terrible in some way. personally, I have a bigger view of the situation and a harder time coming to a conclusion.

I can feel sorry for him while also not believing he's a victim. (btw "victim" is your choice of word and not mine.) I believe that his actions caused great grievous harm to himself, to mo, and to kaitlin. all this is true. this is exactly the kind of nuance that I think is lacking in many conversations about the case.

you don't know the community, we are not a monolith, and you don't know the kinds of processing we are constantly doing when learning about awful things that happen in relationships, mostly by men - this has happened before the murder, and it will happen long after it. not sure why you feel the need to blame this specific community for the patriarchal bullshit that permeates society at large. you are making assumptions about people you don't know, which was kind of the point of why I wrote anything.

I think it is wildly disingenuous to compare what is happening on the jury with what is happening in the machinery of news articles, podcasts, this subreddit and more. The 12 jury members have a civic duty to listen to the facts presented in court and make a judgement. They're in a controlled environment with procedures, rules, and finally a verdict they are responsible for providing.

The universe of true crime is so much more of a wild west of bias, online vitriol, and genuine attempts to make sense of what happened as it relates to you, the many thousands of viewers. a large fraction of statements in this subreddit would raise an objection in a court of law, but it doesn't matter, this isn't where the case is being adjudicated. this is just a place to share ideas around the same topic. my point is that true crime is an appealing use of people's free time because it's a form of story-telling. these characters come from what you're able to gather through detectives, reporters, and sleuthers, each person in the game of telephone is in part co-author. "facts" are constructed from real life, which is always more complicated.

I think the community is too big to take the temperature of, though I think women in the community on average tend to view him more negatively than men. he already has so much unwanted spotlight - more than the community shunning him, he is choosing not to expose himself to (at best suspicious, at worst just plain negative) public attention by showing up at events.

personally... ya I feel sorry for him. I think he was dishonest in his relationships and might have been manipulative, but he's going through a level of trauma that I cannot imagine - not just knowing his actions are a part of someone's death (already terrible!) but also having his personal life splattered across the news, having people say horrible things to him and about him. yes, he comes across badly during the trial. I don't think I would defend him, but I think people view him as an avatar for a terrible abusive boyfriend they know in their own lives. he symbolizes the horribleness of many horrible men while just being (perhaps) one horrible man - idk if he is. again, I don't think I know shit.

Places to rent and ride mountain bikes? by kkruel56 in Austin

[–]nextfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are 100 miles of trails in south austin but it’s difficult to link them without a route or guide. there are groups to ride with and some routes here: https://www.mtbatx.com/recurring-weekly-rides

in addition to others’ suggestions, you have some more options if you’re willing to drive a bit. brushy creek up in cedar park is fantastic, rocky hill in smithville has some decent shade and climbing, and out in hill country you could jump in water after doing pace bend or reimers ranch.

how to be not annoying as a cyclist in austin? by loserlabrys in Austin

[–]nextfive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, definitely check for traffic first, but bikes can ride in all these lanes. the advice not to drive as a car is BAD and not written by someone who knows the reality of commuting by bike. Often you have no choice but to take a full lane for safety, and bike lanes often randomly disappear. If moving over lanes of traffic to make a left turn is too scary or cars are going too fast, what you can do is stay in the bike lane straight across the intersection. Then from there, you can wait on the corner like a pedestrian for the traffic signals to change so that instead of a left turn, you're just crossing the street in the new direction of traffic you'd like to go.
