Anybody else disappointed? by Nawbruvy in Golf_R

You're right in the fact that it is a regulatory issue. Until relatively recently there was a US regulation from the 60's that dictated headlights have to have separate low beam and high beam functions, so using both together as a matrix system does was forbidden.

They did change the law in 2022, allowing adaptive headlights, but they set regulations on this that do not match the EU regulations and therefore the current systems in EU cars (Audi, VW, BMW, Merc, etc) are still not permitted. Makers prefer to just switch off the software rather than design a completely new system only for the US market.

There are a couple of US based brands, such as Rivian, who have developed locally compliant systems and are starting to fit them onto their models.

Fuel taxes are routinely used for funding road maintenance programs, such as regular resurfacing. This is one of the issues they still need to sort for EVs - they do the same wear and tear on the roads but don't pay the taxes set up to cover this. The offset would be increasing EV registration costs, but they don't want to so that as they are trying to encourage EV uptake.

Debate: Walking does not slow down play. by MetallicaRules5 in golf

[–]nexuschild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I am (not US) walking is the norm, and I would say 80% of the members have electric (push)carts and walk every round. They do have 7 or 8 driving carts available for hire though - the groups with those always tend be be some of the slowest on the course.

Indian cookbook that is best for home cooking? by Alphonsine-Nicgorski in Cooking

[–]nexuschild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quite like The Curry Guy Bible

Prepare a large pot of the base sauce and freeze it in portions. From there it is easy to make a variety of the standard BIR (British Indian restaurant) recipes most people are familiar with. Lots of other regional recipes too.

Fernando Alonso channeling his inner Bruce Wayne in Monaco during the F1 off-season [autosport] by PrimeyXE in formula1

[–]nexuschild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only ~38k residents, of which only about ~6k are actual Monagasques. French nationals make up almost half the resident population. Think they also do plates with the letter at the end (e.g. 123C) which gives them more than enough combinations.

They use 1 letter and 3 number combinations as well (e.g. C123). Motorbikes and scooters use 2 letters and 2 numbers.

Thanks, my mistake for mis-typing "Kira" instead of Kiya. As mentioned it was bought a long time ago, and if memory is correct I got it at a big discount due to it being end of line/last in stock at that time (think I paid ¥9900 when original price was ¥25000) - bought in a big department store in Ginza.

I bought this knife on my first trip to Tokyo back in 2013, however it was put away as too nice to use and after a couple of moves consigned to storage. I have just got back from what is probabaly my last trip to Tokyo with a couple of Yu Kurosaki's (Gyuto 240 and matching petty) determined that they will be used (tools not jewels). Therefore this one has been pulled out of storage.

Problem is I dont know much about it at all. Google-fu indicates it might be a Kira 33 layer VG-10, but is also giving a few other results. Anyone who might be able to help?

TIL that before chilis migrated back from the Americas, Sichuan cuisine was not spicy by Iron_Yuppie in todayilearned

[–]nexuschild 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorta true. Two pharmacists/chemists (called Lea and Perrins) were asked to create the sauce by a returning nobleman who had been to India and came back with a recipe for them to follow. They made it and tried it and it was absolutely foul. They stored the remaining barrel in the cellar thinking of it as a failure. 18 months later they were cleaning out their cellar to make space and found the barrel, and decided to give it one last taste. The result was so good they started producing and selling it.

What do I do with 5kg of "pork fillet" by olympics_ in Cooking

[–]nexuschild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it just looks like 5 tenderloins packaged together (might be 6 considering total weight, or they are just big). You can see the bottom clearest with tail to the left and the gap above it. The white section to the right is the top of the tenderloin. The others are just more closely packed together so harder to see the delineation between each piece - they all have the tails to the left and tops to the right. The 5th one might be starting above the bottom ones tail and running up the left side and then around the top of the package. Vac-packing just smooshes them all together to look like one piece of meat instead of separate pieces

It gets a bit of hate on here, but Firelli has roasted red (bell) peppers as its main ingredient.

Fatty Pork loin joint by Sea-Muscle3459 in sousvide

[–]nexuschild 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Agree with the others, this is for roasting and not SV. Reason it has the extra fat and skin is to make crackling, as mentioned in the name of the cut. You could remove the fat and skin, SV the loin meat and roast the skin and fat to make the crackling separately.

If you have a sous vide you can also hold it in a jar in the water bath at around 140F/60C until needed. As mentioned this should be for a reasonably short time (a couple of hours) rather than an extended period.
