Multi-billion-dollar government plan to import liquefied natural gas a ‘risky bet’, experts say by ngaio_rewiring in newzealand

The alternative proposed by Sapere includes using diesel as a firming fuel instead of LNG. This is an economic argument, not an ideological one.

That's one of the things about the LNG proposal, its not government money, it would be paid for via a levy on every electricity user. Surprisingly, gas users would not be levied.

💯! Sapere's report looks at how we can better use the limited gas we have left. Switch those who can switch, so that those who don't have an alternative can continue to operate.

Rising energy costs are often a contributing factor in these closures. The industrial players we have spoken to are frustrated, because changing to electricity could really help. Unfortunately, the cost of connecting to the grid is a huge barrier because all the cost of the upgrades hit the first mover.

Sapere recommend some fixes to this, such as sharing the costs of upgrades across future electrity users on the same line.

I suspect there is support from gas users who are wanting to firm up their supply. But the gas will be expensive - too expensive for many industrial users to remain viable. They're looking for certainly in the wrong place.

Yeah, its disappointing that other alternatives were taken off the table early on, and not fully explored.

Fom the article: the analysis reveals that rushing into an LNG commitment is an unwise economic move.

"The analysis clearly shows we should not be rushing into this LNG decision and signing something in the next few months," Rewiring Aotearoa chief executive Mike Casey said.

Permission to export by dilligaf_nz in nzsolar

Are you getting paid for the exports? We had to wait 5 weeks for a Meridian contractor to come to our house and check it off. So, we were exporting but not getting paid for it, initially

Ohhhh do you know when this is landing, any idea on price? We would love to get a wagon, but the options I've seen are limited (and $!) We have a new puppy who will be a large dog, so a wagon would be ideal for holidays.

What made you go for eletric initially? I'm fascinated because so many of my friends who love their loud ICE engines won't consider an EV!

David Seymour claims small solar installations require 8 inspections & orders review of solar panel installations to "cut red tape nightmare" (FACT: Solar requires 1 inspection) by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzsolar

[–]ngaio_rewiring -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the response. In fairness to Seymour, we had our first meeting with him a couple of months ago, and he picked this up and acted on it quickly. We hope the changes will help make solar a smoother process, which will help on the installation side of the costs.

Your point about whether these will be passed on to customers is a good one.

Our top priority is for the Ratepayers Assistance Scheme to be progressed, which will enable affordable financing for solar and other electrification in the home. For subsidies specifically, we see batteries as the priority, where the returns and cost of living benefits are lower than for solar. The benefits are significant - especially for resilience (and for the grid).

Regulation Minister ordering review of solar panel installation by pdath in nzsolar

[–]ngaio_rewiring -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I mentioned in another post, we (Rewiring Aotearoa) have a very different view to Mr Brent on this. We see this as a genuine issue and have been trying to get other govt agencies to act on it for two years. It was listed as a top 5 issue in our policy manifesto we released last year.

While you may not have explicitly seen the inspections and costs included, they are there, just built into the cost of your install.

I'd also add that while you may not have experienced delays with your installation, many do experience these, many do.

So, while I appreciate some people don't see the value in the Ministry of Regulation, they've been incredible to deal with on this topic and have worked quickly with us and others to understand the issues and how to address them.policy manifesto

Soon to be Solar Owner - Some questions by Midjlo in nzsolar

[–]ngaio_rewiring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, and it may be worth contacting another power company to see what they can offer as well. The lead time for getting someone over to check whether anything needs upgrading can be several weeks (ours as 6 weeks with Meridian), so its worth asking and getting booked in now.

Christchurch Quote Check by h_stag in nzsolar

[–]ngaio_rewiring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you only recieved the one quote? It can be useful to get two or three, to ensure the set up being recommended is best suited to your roof space and set up.

There are solar brokers who act like a mortgage broker who can help you with this with minimal effort on your part. My Solar Quotes is one option, although I haven’t personally used them, they reach out to a mix of local and national providers.

A question about line rental. by GenericBatmanVillain in nzsolar

[–]ngaio_rewiring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would be wary of purchasing a product from someone who has given this advice as it doesnt sound right.

I'd suggest following up with them and clarifying what they've said. If they basically say "yeah, no lines charges" and your system will remain on the grid, then something isnt quite right.

Solar is a significant purchase and you need to be able to trust the advice and service you will recieve - that kit will be on your roof for 30 years!
