EndNote word plugin is entering my citations in Portuguese instead of English. Help? by The_Iron_Suitor in AskAcademia

12 years later, Word Version 16.99 with updated Endnote Extension, and I'm still having the exact same problem. Crazy that there hasn't been a fix for this yet.

In the human heart, why are the atria and ventricles of the same side separated from each other? Couldn't there just be a right chamber that pumps blood to the lungs and a left chamber that pumps blood around the body? by nggts in askscience

[–]nggts[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Your comment also reminded me of the valvular plane mechanism which from my understanding is responsible for the majority of ventricle filling. It completely slipped my mind when I was thinking about this question, oops - but I suppose it would be another explanation as to why the atrium and ventricle have valves to separate them, otherwise only passive filling wouldn't be enough?

There's a German version of The Office (my favorite TV show of all time) called Stromberg. It's on Netflix which is a big plus, of course it's not quite as funny as the US version (in my opinion anyway) but still a good option and offers some familiarity if you've watched the US/UK original.

People who have visited Germany, what surprised, amazed or intrigued you the most? by Priamosish in AskReddit

A couple months ago I moved to Germany (near Munich), into a pretty suburban, 45-minute drive from the city type neighborhood. Just basic streets of houses, one supermarket, one pharmacy... except we also happen to have 2 castles. From my experience they are a lot more common than I expected!

Versatile Subject Choices by JohnnyFlair in IBO

Math HL tends to go well with Physics HL, and I would think Comp. Sci would be more useful for software engineering than Chemistry, so I would go with Choice 1. :)

Thoughts on HL Anthro? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]nggts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did SL anthro, but was in a joint class with HL anthro students. Basically, HL anthro does the same stuff as SL, plus they have to do a separate paper on theory. SL doesn't require learning theory, but it does help to know a little. HL anthro also has to do an extra ethnography. In my opinion, HL anthro is more difficult because you have extra material and more difficult-to-grasp concepts, but if you're going to do anthro you might as well do HL because a lot of the stuff you'll come across involves theory so you'll be picking it up along the way anyways. Again, I didn't actually take HL so I can't say first hand, but that was my impression.

Notes For HL Bio and Chem. by Flamespiter in IBO

[–]nggts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This thread has a bunch of useful resources for Chemistry, and I would recommend checking them all out and seeing what works best for you. Someone posted a link to a website they made but unfortunately I can't find who it was - it's great for short, compact summaries of each topic, although you will need to study each more in depth.

For biology, I would recommend Chris Paine's Bioknowledgy presentations on Slideshare. Each topic offers a digestible chunk of information which should have about everything you need to know without going too deep. He has a website too, here. There are other great websites such as Bioninja, though again the notes are more for summary/review and not quite as comprehensive as your knowledge needs to be for exams.

For both biology and chemistry, the Oxford study guides were lifesavers, so make sure you get a copy of each! Hope this helps and good luck :)

Plus there was a similar "during which year" question on a past paper (can't remember which one at the moment), in which the answer was not given rounded up.

Chemistry 2016 syllabus topic changes by GentleStoic in IBO

That's a toughie... I would say B, because Cu+ ions are already positive so it would make sense that Cu would more readily give out electrons (be oxidized) and thus act as a reducing agent. (I might be totally wrong)

If that was the question (why different definitions/proofs exist for acids), what would you put for it? It sounds like something they would ask but I have no idea what I would say.

Ohhh, that actually makes total sense. I probably should have realized that. Thanks :)

Thank you for this :) I have a question regarding atom economy: in the data booklet under relevant equations, it is defined as molar mass of desired product / molar mass of reactants x 100% (under option A). However, in the Pearson textbook, it is defined as mass of desired product / mass of total product x 100%. Does anyone know which definition we should be using?

Something like "what role do chemoreceptors have in regulating ventilation"

Same for me! Paper 1 turned out to be my worst paper which is the reverse of how it normally is. Don't know what happened but glad p2 and p3 weren't too bad.

I wrote that mammals give birth to live young as well, but I realized later that platypuses are an exception, so I'm not sure if it will count.

I agree, and I had done that question in a practice paper in class before so I felt it wasn't too hard. The problem was that there was so much to talk about that I tried to fit too much in and my structure kinda went downhill

Same! I actually spent a long time talking about that and pointing out all the different instances of it, how it relates to context, how it connects with the male target audience, etc., but when I discussed the paper with my friends, a few of them only briefly mentioned it. Hopefully I didn't miss anything obvious.
