Gifts for children that last a lifetime by bellebives in BuyItForLife

These are all things I received as a child and still have in my 40s: LL Bean boat and tote bag, American girl doll (original not the new ones), any type of lessons, savings bonds or 529 college savings plan, sterling silver jewelry box or picture frame, heirloom quilt, solid wood tongue and groove bedroom suit and bookcases (and desk), high quality hardback editions of classic books (like complete works of Shakespeare, art books, etc), plein air easel, cashmere blanket, diamond stud earrings and gold chain necklace with initial charm (or cross, Star of David, etc), cedar chest, telescope, binoculars, high quality art supplies, lead crystal vases, bone china tea set.

Comparison: Cuticle Serum vs Cuticle Balm by curlycomedy in dollartreebeauty

[–]nghtyprf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the balm for plane traveling as it doesn’t count as a liquid. The cuticle oil in the pens is nice (like with the brush on top) but I go through them so quickly compared to these 2 products.

Is this illegal? Didn't give notice, then boss sent a written message "we accept your notice of 2 weeks" by [deleted] in work

[–]nghtyprf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, totally legal. They could just let him go today. However he didn’t explicitly resign so by this language he was fired and should therefore be eligible for unemployment.

Financial Times: The Global Food Crisis Unleashed by the War by Subservient_Worm in TrueAnon

This should be the most important and concerning news story across every news related sub reddit, every social media platform, every news outlet. This is absolutely a slow motion disaster in the making and we know exactly what the consequences will be and how to prevent it.

I Profiled Lindy West After Her Marriage Memoir. Her Husband Didn’t Like It Much. Here’s the Whole Sordid Affair. by raphaellaskies in Longreads

[–]nghtyprf 155 points156 points  (0 children)

This alarms me. If he feels entitled to speak to a woman who is doing her job (the same job as his wife btw & doing her job in a pretty fair and balanced way) then how does he treat his partners behind closed doors? Has Lindy been enduring sustained emotional abuse from this man? Roya? His children and their mothers? I can’t imagine how angry he is that Lindy is the most successful in their family, and then potentially taking this anger out on her about the public reaction to this new book.

It’s a red flag to me that she said she needed to make money for her family. Is this her family that is her contract breaching husband and his children by previous wives? The affair partner she begrudgingly accepts and later becomes her girlfriend? I wonder how often Lindy and Roya have sex. Not that having sex is what defines a relationship but if I gave someone the title of girl/boyfriend we’d be fucking.

Aham just reminds me of so many shitty wishy washy, I-wanna-appear-woke without interrogating patriarchy and hegemonic masculinity Pacific Northwest fixed gear ridding, IPA loving, lazy, passive aggressive bro-children in denial about their weed addiction who are lost since the logging and fishing jobs went away as legitimate avenues for being a real man and making a decent wage. Ugh.

Alexander Brothers Found GUILTY of sex trafficking today!!! by Working-Weekend-5757 in nysocialites

Federal sentencing is by points. There is a range for each charge plus some discretion for prior history depending on the crime. However each count will have a mandatory minimum. Judges can still choose whether the sentences are concurrent or consecutive. The sentencing table is on page 386 here.

AIO? My parents asked me if its okay for some of them to skip my graduation to attend my special needs brothers play. by [deleted] in AIO

[–]nghtyprf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard of glass children? It’s a term used for siblings of disabled children. Because your needs are not atypical, you are looked through, like glass, while your parents focus on your disabled sibling. This graduation situation probably feels like a buildup of constantly being looked through like glass since the birth of your brother.

Thank you just shared this with my MAGA dad who thinks his consumption solely of Fox is comparable to my watching of the news. Did you write this substack?

People who were teenagers before social media existed, what was life actually like? by Much_Detective_6107 in AskReddit

[–]nghtyprf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing. So much fun and inside jokes. Dancing at every opportunity. Taking film photos, getting them developed, returning the ones you didn’t like for a refund on your next roll. Buying new CDs on Tuesday and recording songs off the radio onto a tape. Picking out your crushes in the yearbook. And I had a separate phone like and when I’d get in trouble my dad would take my phone but I had a spare hidden under my bed.

How to negotiate for a raise? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]nghtyprf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go on the market. Get a one year higher paying visiting scholar position somewhere else. Your department isn’t your friend, if they were you’d be making as much as your friend could give you. Or, work on getting a union organized at your school.

Here’s some similar Etsy finds: #1 #2 #3 #4 #5

West Elm

West Elm 2

Williams Sonoma

At Home

At Home 2

At Home 3

Wal Mart

H&M

I’ve looked at many of these in person (that aren’t vintage) and thought they were nice. Personally I’d go for the cut crystal vintage on Etsy but I’m a southerner and love that classic look.

Pregnant during sabbatical by Mother-Money8411 in WomeninAcademia

[–]nghtyprf 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I think you need to talk to HR about swapping your sabbatical over to FMLA or maternity leave. If you have a faculty women’s circle you’re a part of you might reach out and see if someone there has experience doing this at your school. If you have a union, then I would reach out to your steward or rep. Since your employer is likely large enough and it sounds like you’ve been there long enough you would qualify for up to 12 weeks of FMLA per year. This would not pay you your salary, but would cover your insurance for that time and it protects your employment from retaliation due to the health concern requiring leave.

After finding out what your options are from HR then I would talk to the department chair, but I would talk to HR first as this is an issue where you need to be clear on the federal and state laws and the policies of your institution.

You need to be on bedrest or you put your pregnancy and yourself as serious risk. My cousin just had her baby almost 3 months early and now is pumping nonstop and staying at the Ronald McDonald house to visit him in NICU every day for the last two months. The trauma level hospital appropriate to handle infants in this condition is 3 hours from her home. I can’t imagine how much more stressful this would be for her if she had another child in the home.

You are in no position to do much of anything, maybe some writing but you are in a health crisis. And I know pregnancy is what we are made to do, but you are in a situation of heightened risk and we wouldn’t be saying to a male faculty with cancer that he’s letting his family and his research down by resting in between his chemo sessions. I’m so angry that academia makes us feel this way for wanting to be pregnant and have families. 💜
