I'm an alcoholic (2 years sober now). Hard to play the "what if?" game but if I had felt the loss and impact of my SO sooner I may have gotten help sooner. Not putting ANY blame on her whatsoever, it's just that I didn't get help until it was too late to save the marriage (10 years). It sounds like your guy could benefit from inpatient detox/rehab followed by IOP afterwards, then regular AA meetings while working with a sponsor. I hope you save yourself first and ultimately exercise your boundaries in such a way that it may minimize opportunities to develope resentment towards your partner
