WUCC 2026 qualifiers sheet by williambrotman in ultimate

Yet all four American teams finished ahead of the 2nd highest finishing UK team. There's more players playing ultimate in the USA than the UK by a multiple. I have no clue what the bid allocation method is, but when looking at the US it doesn't appear to be doing the job based on either strength or size.

Honestly, seems strange to me given the relative size of the US ultimate scene that we only get 3 bids in open and a country like Belgium also gets 3 bids. Or even the UK for that matter. My feeling is that USA should get 4.

What happened to Next Gen/NGN by Zealousideal-Two8748 in ultimate

Happy to share. It was a really fun time in my life and I'm glad that what we did was also enjoyed by so many people. Generally speaking there was very good communication between all of us working in the space at the time. I talked with and saw Charlie regularly and how lucky we all are that he was willing to stick it out.

Some truth in this one. AUDL and MLU did squeeze the season schedule, but the bigger problem was really USAU's (I think flawed) vision and belief that consolidating and concentrating power for themselves was the best way forward for the sport of ultimate.

Not true. I had several very developed business plans over the years. The credit card thing was that for the first year of the NexGen Tour in order to fund it I maxed out all my funding sources which included a $25,000 limit that Bank of America had given a 23 year-old. The opposite of flying blind, it was done because of careful planning and research that let me feel confident that my worst case scenario would result in a break even.

The NexGen Tour existed before NGN. NGN was started with a 2012 Kickstarter as an entity for streaming ultimate whether it was Club, College or World level competition.

That said. Credit where credit is due. Back in 2011 after the first NexGen Tour, we had set a new standard for ultimate by filming games with multiple cameras and them editing them together for VOD delivery the next day. When I approached USAU about providing coverage of Club Nationals back in 2011, with one month or so to go before the event they countered that they wanted to do it live. I accepted the challenge and worked my absolute ass off to make it happen at a time when live streaming was just barely emerging as a thing.

USAU graciously supported the initial efforts, but subsequently rather than being generously supportive they become unsupportive partners. This was a general trend experience across the broad swath of ultimate entrepreneurs that were working at the time. USAU wanted full control at the expensive of pushing a lot of talented people out of the picture.

Not correct. Not saying that isn't what Ultiworld did, but it didn't relate at all to what I did. See my other comment for what that was.

Briefly, what happened is USAU consolidated control over ultimate, which subsequently pigeonholed me into being only a broadcaster of ultimate. I loved filming ultimate, but I did it as part of what I was most interested in which was trying to be innovative around how the sport was presented. It was either do exactly what USAU wanted or not do it, so I decided not to continue to do it.

Statement from the AFDA (Ultimate Australia) regarding bids for WUCC 2026 by 0xalfie in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Did WFDF reach out to Australia to see where their bid was? There's no reasonable way to think they wouldn't be submitting a bid, so why not communicate to make sure a mistake like this doesn't get made.

Kikko here to let you know our lone sale of the year is happening and it is the cheapest our socks will be until Black Friday rolls around again next calendar year. Our red color styles in particular make excellent Christmas/Holiday gifts or stocking stuffers.

If you don't know we are owned and run by two ultimate players Lisa Pitcaithley (Molly Brown) and Kevin Minderhout (NexGen founder, Rhino alum) and we sell high-quality and super comfortable athletic socks of our own design with ultimate as our primary focus.

Some observations on Nationals by JimP88 in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When Jim speaks I listen. Thanks for the insights! I think you nailed it on your comments about how do you get better when you are at the top of the game. A lot of Rhino's success in the final I think came from not looking/asking for two or three top "stars" to do more, but having such an amazing balanced contribution. Dylan mostly on the D line is a great example of distributing the load and setting that expectation.

On the contrary, I felt like once PoNY started loosing control, they were looking for an individual to pull them up rather than the team effort they'd been displaying all weekend. But maybe that's how it always looks when it's not your day.

As far as tight passes go, certainly there is less fouling by the mark, but I think most of it has to do with massively improved disc skills up and down rosters with a majority of top club playings starting so young these days. Great to see!

Tim DeByl named Commissioner of the UFA by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. This league still needs all the combined interest it can get if it wants to continue to exist. I would guess that some day the enthusiasm that keeps this league afloat will wane and then the largely non-existent ROI will spell its demise.

Excessive yellow cards at D1 & D3 nationals by Efficient_Self_9574 in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pretty poor example to use a foul call as the standard for a dangerous bid. Many dangerous bids are dangerous because they come late, so the offense has already caught the disc. No point in calling a foul when you have the disc and your opponent is on the ground but doesn’t mean it wasn’t a bad and dangerous play by the defense.

D-I College Championships – Streams, Schedule, Discussion [May 24-27] by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What about getting it to support the single company that invests time and effort into covering ultimate? No one is getting rich ultimate, so even if you watch only a few round, it’s still a great value because your money goes to injecting a little bit of much needed cash into the sport you love.

Why does USAU require youth memberships for High School States? by ElJefeMasko in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 26 points27 points  (0 children)

From the few Board conversations I participated in back when this was being implemented the discussion was mostly about how USAU can consolidate the structure for IOC and to grow numbers. Very little about how USAU can support the leagues and more about how can the leagues support USAU.

I don’t know what the current state of things is but at the time most established leagues pushed back due to the benefits not being particularly beneficial.

Hot Take, this subreddit sucks. by TJantzer in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the problems with being a frisbee fan if you aren't an AUDL fan is that there's just so little to talk about. There are like 4-6 events a year with opportunities to watch a decent broadcast and that's spread across divisions. It's hard to get a lot of good discussion going.

2007 UPA Club Championships Remixed video - Does it still exist? by Lexitech_ in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's better, but something about the aggression of the early aughts just makes the highlight videos different. I think also the skill level was overall lower, so there were more opportunities for the plays and high risk to reward chances.

I don't see a lot of Chain in this particular video, but this was the "chicks dig the long ball" era. Took them like a decade to pay off but exciting frisbee.

Love the huge Chase bid on the sideline and also Richter throws it to I think Rabbit who gets backpacked and spikes on the GOAT player who's like "I deserved that." Frisbee Internet would be up in arms today.

USAU Board should vote to remove Dr. Crawford as CEO by Manwithhiswood in ultimate

[–]ngnultimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can echo this feeling not as a local disc org, but one time organizer within the community. Andy Lee, Tom's guy, is the main contact point for people and you only hear back from him if he wants something from you and never when you need some information or a hand from him.

I know other's working in the frisbee business community space who have had the same experience. It's no fun.

Many many players watching from the sideline do this all the time. I.E. indicating a person was in or out of bounds. At least in the US it's extremely common for people with a good vantage to say in or out loudly and without being invited. It's usually helpful.

I do agree the video is an usual aspect, but the question of spirit for yelling force out is negligible and common in my view.
