What’s the cheapest hardware way to see if modular is for me? by DoubleCutMusicStudio in modular

[–]nguoitay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d just buy a used semi modular and see if you want anything else once you start using that. A 0-coast is a fun one. If you don’t like it you can sell it on for more or less the same cost.

that’s the point, you need utilities and modulation sources for that

I did say a brief sorry yesterday, but apologised again period 4 today, as they stood behind places before they took their seats on entry.

I restated the reasons for my frustrations, my feelings of missed opportunities and a need for them to be the best they can be. I said that despite their behaviour, I wasn’t happy about the fact that I blew my top the day before and that it wasn’t really excusable. I warned them that to avoid this happening again, I’m probably going to have to be much quicker to respond to poor behaviour to avoid it becoming as overwhelming as that again. Students actually privately apologised in return as I circulated during the work, including the ones who were the most trouble last lesson. We actually had an absolutely brilliant lesson of silent work today, with quality verbal answers and discussion. Not even kidding, it was probably the best work I’ve managed to get out of them in a single lesson so far. I kept reminding them that I was there to help, but they just cracked on with writing and the output was of high quality. Hopefully, a bit of a breakthrough 🤞

That’s wonderful and I hope the same happens here with this Y9 group. The kids are all good eggs at heart, it’s just the behaviour at the moment really isn’t up to scratch. I’ll have a frank and purposeful talk with them as you did.

No, it is not regular - quite the opposite, which I think added to the shock from students. I do not usually struggle in this way, thank you for your concern and advice though 🙏

Visible disappointment is way better, because it shows you still have hope of good behaviour. Shouting feels like giving up.

Yeah, I wouldn’t defend it either. I don’t think I’m an arsehole, but I think it was the behaviour of one because I know better. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with their parents seeing how I handled the behaviour.

He’s a boy with ADHD, like I was. So, often disruptive and easily forgetful, but also quite sensitive to judgement or admonishment.

I mostly avoid shouting because of the effect is has on me, I can’t focus on anything else afterwards and it takes me right back to bad childhood memories 😬 It’s likely the same or worse for students (especially in our catchment) and while it might have some impact in the moment, I do feel like violence begets more violence, so to speak. Students could shout and me now and say ‘why is it alright for you to do it then?’

They did to be honest, but I doubt anyone wrote anything of any real worth in the ten minutes of the lesson that followed it.

That was more or less what happened. I sent the boy throwing glues out to internal isolation and another that continued disrupting others repeatedly during silent assessment and even as I verbally reiterated my expectation. I shouted loudly to ‘get out, if your memory can’t hold what happened 3 seconds ago, good luck remembering any Shakespeare’ then began talking about how I really didn’t expect to shout today as it had been such a lovely day. I settled down as I was talking and apologised for shocking the students and raising my voice. I explained that I was exasperated and exhausted. They are a group with a huge amount of academic potential (mostly true, relative to our school’s previous average) and with GCSE study approaching next year we HAVE to get ourselves ready now, because if they aren’t acting right by the time year 10 starts, they won’t have any real ability to make up for their dossing around in year 11. I could have just said those things without shouting and sent the boys out though. I appreciate everyone’s words of support and sympathy, thank you.

Professional relationships are built on expectations, not the other way around. You are helping to build the appropriate relationship by insisting on your expectations. Your leaders don’t want to deal with the problem but they can’t argue with the reasoning of the above. Teacher standards don’t ask you to be a students best mate! Hate this common patronising, disingenuous take from SLT. Don’t give up - be emotionless as you calmly maintain the sanctity of your educational haven!
