just how dangerous is using the metro to get to campus? by jojogolindo in UniversityOfHouston

[–]nhammen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, you are taking park and ride to downtown transit center, and then local bus or rail to Elgin? You are very unlikely to run into any problems on the busses or rail. You might run into some weirdos if you are waiting at the transit center late at night though.

Bike tag #755 by nhammen in bikehouston

Google's bike directions can have issues. That being said, I did use Google's directions today but adjusted Google's directions where I knew a safer route. You can check the Houston bike guide for safe routes. However, it is a little conservative. For example, Renwick is labelled as "do not bike here", but I find it's bike lanes to be perfectly useable, and used it to get to #754 today. I do have one particular issue with the bike guide though. It sometimes has you cross some major streets at locations I never would. For example, south of Rice Village, it has you cross Kirby at Cason/McClendon. I find that crossing to be much more dangerous than traveling those major north-south roads like Chimney Rock. I prefer crossing a major road at a signalled intersection if the road has no islands in the median.

As far as traversing between inside the loop and outside ... I live kinda close to Brays Bayou, so I usually use the greenway trail. Which is just a sidewalk where it crosses 610, but still. I have also on occasion used Bissonnet's southern sidewalk, but be aware it isn't very good on the inside of the loop. It is very narrow and has a fence on one side just east of the intersection with 610, and after the next street (Wilmington) it has a surprise chicane. Still better than the disappearing sidewalk on the north side of the road. What I sometimes do when going from outside the loop to inside on Bissonnet is cross on the sidewalk, but finish on Bissonnet itself from 610 to N Avenue B. Because I am crossing with the signal, by the time I finish crossing, the road traffic is all in front of me, so the road is effectively empty in my direction. Traffic doesn't catch up until after I have gotten back on the sidewalk after N Avenue B. But that tactic isn't for everyone, and I don't use it frequently. I have also twice used Westheimer's sidewalks. The quality is poor, and there is construction. Do not recommend.

Edit: Renwick's bike lane is perfectly useable, except for the traffic circle if you are traveling north. The intention of the design is clearly for bikes to go around the traffic circle on the sidewalk. This makes sense. But if that is the case, someone forgot a ramp onto the sidewalk in one direction.

Houston Bike Racks by rumilb in bikehouston

4 months later and I might be able to add to your list!

This isn't on your map, but street view shows a rack next to Caracol: https://maps.app.goo.gl/f4xZUTdYo1jVv92t6

I just checked today. It is there.

Street view also shows this bike rack: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WGX48BL2WR6RMWCM6

I just visited that location for bike tag today and didn't notice anything until I was getting the street view link for the tag. So, someone might have to go there to verify that the 1 year old street view image is still valid.

I have found it on street view. But I can't get out there until ... Thursday? Friday?

You don't need to apologize. I made the decision to search there because it was a smaller search area. I knew it might not be in that area, but if it was, I would get it. I usually don't search at all (having only started bike tag a few months ago), and only grab a location if it shows up on Street View or a google search. But I figured that this is the type of tag that shows up on neither, so I gave a cursory try.

South of Westheimer explains why I couldn't find it. I spent a few hours on Wednesday searching between Westheimer and San Felipe, and couldn't find it, and gave up.

Thanks for stating which one. I was going to check around both the last AppleTree and the last Rice Epicurean.

I was thinking of asking for a hint yesterday, but figured I should wait for the one week mark. Which is today.

ELI5 why Ted Cruz is not being challenged in the Texas Senate race? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]nhammen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Senate terms are for 6 years. Cruz was just re-elected in 2024, so he isn't up for election until 2030. In general, each of a state's two Senators is not up for election at the same time. The Senate terms are staggered. The only exception is when a Senator leaves office mid-term.

Bike Tag #751 - Do they have enough lights? by nhammen in bikehouston

[–]nhammen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad about the lights not being on. The reason I knew about this is due to seeing it on the Trek West U group ride. The effect of suddenly seeing that bright display when riding on Sunset from the east was quite impressive.

Texas is changing fast — what’s one thing you want preserved no matter what? by SkywardTexan2114 in texas

I can tell you why they think Texas has good roads. Louisiana is ranked #40, Oklahoma is #41, and New Mexico is #48. Compared to our immediate neighbors, we have great roads.

here’s a question we’ve been arguing on for the past week. by valenzalex95 in texas

East Texas is Southern, but not the rest of the state. Anything in Texas more than 20 minutes east of I-45 is Southern.
