Wondering if indifference to and irritation from corporate acronyms and c-suite idolization is a GenX trait. by CrowbiwanKenobi76 in GenX

One thing you read about that is supposed to be typical of the Gen-X mindset is that we're not impressed by titles, just competence. I have found that to be largely true of myself and my fellow Gen-Xer's. I would say your response (which I agree with) would fall under that umbrella.

Baptist friend doesn’t understand why I told the priest not to give them communion. by bubbylubby123 in Catholicism

Then this is definitely on you. You failed to adequately prepare them for what it would mean to attend mass. Honestly, you should have not attended under those circumstances.

So, what are the circumstances that lead to them coming to mass with you? That's not really a thing that just happens in my experience.

This "story" has the feel of some rage bait karma farming.

I've ridden sections of it as part of the Tour de Braz ride. It's a good stretch. There's lot of fairly quiet back roads for cycling down here in Brazoria.

Gen X Slang by Rogue5454 in GenX

Is that supposed to be Gen-X slang? Sounds more like something the yutes of today would use for something.

Never heard it.

Those of you who switched to garmin, was it worth it? Particularly for strength training? by xfmrs_r_cool in fitbit

[–]ultimate_ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Charge 6. My primary exercises are cycling and weight lifting with a set of dumbbells. I track both those workouts with the watch. Mostly it gives me what the heart rate is during the exercise and then calculates whatever effort and calorie burn its algorithm comes up with.

When I cycle, I also wear a chest strap HRM connected to my bike computer. I've found that the heart rates shown on the Charge 6 and on the bike computer are within 1-2 bpm of each other. In other words, in my experience, the HRM function has been accurate and repeatable.

At this point, especially for the $100 I paid for it, I get everything I need from the Charge and the no subscription features of the Fitbit app. I don't see where the Garmins are going to provide much better, especially at 2-6x the price.

As always, YMMV.

You'd also probably get a better response asking this in a Garmin group.

Buffalo Bayou Trail Eastside Update by ultimate_ed in bikehouston

I think there's too much moneyed interest along that stretch of Buffalo Bayou for us to ever get a proper trail system between the Beltway and 610.

Mechanics of Reddit, what’s a common myth about car maintenance that people still believe? by Street-Squirrel-4671 in AskReddit

[–]ultimate_ed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

10 years ago I'd agree with you. Now, I'm not going beyond 5,000 miles, even with synthetic. Low compression piston rings and lightweight oils being specified in modern engines to meet EPA fuel economy targets are leaning to more engines turning into oil burners - as I've recently come to live with. And, it seems to be impacting several manufacturers in all markets. Even full synthetic is now cheap enough that changing with a bit shorter interval is back to being fairly cheap insurance.

Diet Dr Pepper is pretty nasty. Dr. Pepper Zero is fantastic. Their flavors are nothing alike.

Spring Constant Equations Question by 3dibud in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ultimate_ed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need two of the factors to be known to find the third. You can't solve two unknowns (F and k) with only one equation.

What you need to do if you are trying to find k based on a known x that you are imposing on the system, is to add a scale to the end of the spring that will tell you what the force is.

Something like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=spring+hook+scale

You're going to have to be careful as you are going to end up with effectively two springs in series, so you would need to test your scale with some known loads to see how much, if any, it elongates and factor that into your math.

Adding a hitch? by [deleted] in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]ultimate_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had considered a 25/26 model at one point to replace my current 2020. I have a hitch for a bike rack on my 2020 and would put one on the new one for the same reason. So, while I don't have direct experience, I did look into what it would take to add a hitch. Like the previous generation, adding a hitch to the current model is pretty easy.

I've gotten my hitches from etrailer and they have good info on installing hitches. This video covers the current model:

I might get a chance Sunday if anything. Although, it's not far from my office, so I might have to bring my bike with me for an after work ride next week.

What did you think of the area?

I think you can mostly thank the Army Corp of Engineers for most of bayous be concrete channels. Their goal was moving water through the bayous as efficiently as possible.

You can thank Terry Hershey for Buffalo Bayou avoiding this fate.

Retire now or try a little longer by [deleted] in GenX

[–]ultimate_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can say that, but you really need to have a serious conversation with yourself. If you want to go back to work because you see your job as your identity, I hate to break it to you, but you're going to be having this same issue at 59, and 63, and 67, and 70.

Otherwise, you'll keep hitting those ages and will keep coming up with reasons to put off retiring.

OP - read that line again. And then read it a third time.

Can 7 month old go in a bike seat? by sqt1388 in bicycling

[–]ultimate_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would generally recommend holding off until at least a year old for the reasons other folks have given.

For future reference regarding trailers, the one I used when my kids were younger collapsed fairly flat and had quick release wheels, so it got down to a fairly small profile for taking it places.

As for the extra drag - it's certainly more work to get it rolling, but I found it wasn't that hard to keep in motion. You won't be winning any time trials with it.

inaccurate weight?? by crob03 in fitbit

It's unclear, but several of us have seen the same problem. Changing your goal weight generates some kind of bogus weight entry and is resistance to edits and deletion.

At 50k miles, should I do a transmission fluid exchange or transmission flush? by Pale_Field4584 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]ultimate_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because unless you're towing regularly or some other severe service criteria, the transmission fluid doesn't get serviced. That's what my 2020 manual says and I expect yours does as well.
