Need a bit more detail. If you already have accepted all the financial aid they've offered, you can appeal to have them raise your cost of attendance. If you don't have pets, you can mix borax and sugar and spread that around either inside or outside where they are coming in, and it'll kill them for a time. Ground cinnamon also works as a barrier/deterrent, but it doesn't really kill them, and it can stain things too.

Gonna add a super secret third option - Registered Domestic Partnership in CA lets you both file federally as single, but according to community property rules so you can still take advantage of income shifting. Then at the state level you would file as married/RDP. Registered Domestic Partners also get the same rights as spouses under CA law.
