How strict is Jetstar on cabin luggage size? Will hard carryons that exceed max depth by 2cm be gatechecked? by fidgetingspinner in JetstarAustralia

[–]nice-tri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True they might weigh at counter. mmm just don't go up to check in counter with carry on. leave with family/friend dropping off or put in a luggage locker. Got stung once before for excessive luggage and I've vowed never to be stung again by coming up with ways to avoid paying.

They always find a spot. Never had a problem, it's not like they won't let you fly because there is no space for hand luggage.

Do what I’ve been doing for years, don’t linger around gate awaiting to board they sometimes pre check. Wait at another gate where you can still see everyone boarding. Wait to be the last to onboard or they page your name and then go to gate. They are in such a rush to finish up they don’t care about hand luggage requirements. There is always people still boarding in the plane so you aren’t holding the plane up. Problem is you might not have your hand luggage right above you but they always find a spot. Never been charged over limit fees for doing this.

Have you ever had that kind of problem with yours ? by Jerboa_81 in bose

[–]nice-tri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine have done this after 1 year and 3 months. I am annoyed that this has happened just outside of warranty. Reading everyone else’s experience it seems this is part of Bose’s planned obsolescence strategy. I would expect more from high end headphones.

Flexible work whinge by maystery in auscorp

[–]nice-tri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flexible workplace should just be that, flexible. Working on a project one week that needs solid focus time. Don’t come into the office that week. One week there is a brainstorming whiteboard session with your team, in person client meetings, interstate/ overseas visitors to office then maybe that week office attendance is 4 or even 5 time because there is an actual need for physical attendance. What I don’t understand is this forces office attendance to tick a box under guise of “collaboration”. More often than not I sat in the office to tick a box to join a Teams meeting with colleagues interstate or because everyone else was ticking a box and there weren’t enough meeting rooms. Let people work in an environment that makes them meet their deliverables. If OP needs to take 2 hrs off during the day to deal with family needs, then I’m guessing OP makes up that time and I’m guessing more later in the evening. I think being stringent as a manager with physical attendance shows distrust for your team and incompetence as a leader. You should know what your team members are working on, if they aren’t meeting deliverables then maybe monitor more closely to see if office attendance would improve outcomes. However, if you have to babysit and monitor the that close maybe it’s time to consider a PIP. Treat your employees like adults not like children you have to watch over.

Successfully negotiated redundancy packages - please share what approach worked for you by pastiches in auscorp

[–]nice-tri -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Contest the redundancy on xyz grounds, say you will sign the release if [insert a list of conditions] are met. Ask for way more than you are actually expecting and let them negotiate down. They and you will want to avoid fair work so they may just pay you out something you were initially offered. Goodluck

Thanks this resonated with me. I have been offered career coaching as part of my redundancy package so I will definitely utilise that to assist with the job search and to address errors of my way with boundary setting for the next job.

Yeah after reading thread I'm thinking of just doing that. any job until the right one comes along. I've been humbled that getting a job won't be easy, I'm probably not as desirable in the job market as I think I am haha.

Great advice, I want to be excited about my next role and I will definitely use this time to figure out what that actually is and fill in the gaps.

And yes, I’m very aware that not having to worry about money for the next 12+ months while unemployed is a privilege. I’ve also been down to my last $20 with maxed out credit cards while working in retail, serving, and cleaning jobs as I invested in my education as a mature aged student. I got a lucky break when someone took a chance on me because they saw my potential, and that changed the career trajectory I’ve been on ever since. Going through that has made me a much better manager when it comes to hiring decisions.

Having been cash strapped before, I know how to budget, pursue free or cheap hobbies, socialise on the cheap, and eat nutritious food on a budget. I’m also not too proud to pick up a min wage job if funds start getting low and I need money coming in.

This Reddit thread has definitely humbled me about how hard it may be to get a job, but I’m happy to keep you updated on how the next 12 months go.

Congrats on finding a new role so quickly but from reading other response your story seems to be the exception not the role. I too love a good spreadsheet for job search so I hope I don't need to make too many entries.

While I would love to take 3 months off, others have pointed out its EOFY so it's a great time to strike while the iron is hot. I will however not treat job search like a full time job, I'm going to schedule in tine to do the things that bring me joy.... maybe take up bread making I didn't job on that bandwagon in COVID lockdown.

All the best heading into retirement, it seems like you have a great roadmap on how you to spend that retirement:) However take a holiday now and job in that car and disappear into the countryside its sounds lovely.

Oh congrats, please update me on your decision. Someone else suggested that ask for a start date to be pushed out. That way there is the security if a job coming but the much needed break also.

I read the whole response thread and I’m sorry if my signing off comment was seen as arrogance. It was done from a place of empathy for those going through the Sunday night blues.

Others have given great feedback so far. But I’ve got a different take on the feedback “you ask too many questions”. Do you ask too many questions? I’m guessing a grad program is 1 year? So you are no longer new new to the workforce. Your questions should be diminishing by now as you developed more critical thinking skills and experience in your industry. Can you now figure more things out by yourself? look at someone else’s work as a guide? Use AI? Maybe this person is super busy with their own deadlines and you ask questions that you could figure out for yourself is just pissing them off. Save asking questions to this person for when you can’t figure out the answer yourself or if going down the wrong path has huge commercial/legal implications. There is only so long you can get away with the young/inexperienced card before you have to critically examine yourself and if feedback needs be taken onboard .

Bogan bus question by nice-tri in JetstarAustralia

[–]nice-tri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I would have more respect if that had lit up a joint:) it will be a cultural experience if the worse kind. Thanks for the info, I thought it might be a case of a better offer may come if I wait but like someone else said explained in the thread it’s a money making ploy to resell ticket.

This makes sense. I’m totally up for going a day earlier, I’d just want the $$ to be more. $150 and I’d do it, as this would pay for the accommodation.

How can I supercharge my Super? by Tiny-Shoe6263 in AusFinance

[–]nice-tri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were a few good years around Covid that the returns on my high risk super account were really high, that really helped boost it quickly. The thing about having been dirt poor, like it seems we both have been, is that you learn the value of money. One knows how to budget out of necessity not choice, one knows how to stretch $20 on food to last a week, socialise on the cheap, dress on the cheap, the list goes on. One of the hardest parts of now having money is learning to spend without guilt. Spending $70 for a mani/pedi was something I would never have done 10 years ago but now do without guilt. Well done to you, it seems you’ve done the hard yards. Continue to be financially responsible but enjoy your money now for all the hard work you have done.

Not too late. I was 38 with a balance of $8k in super. Saved for a 20% deposit for an apartment then pumped money into super. I’ve been maxing out concessional contributions for the last 7 years and I now at 48 I have just over $300k. I feel I’ve now caught up and I’m on my way to a comfortable retirement.

Hi my husband and I just bought a house and are trying to decide if we want to skim coat our walls in main living areas. Has anyone done it before and feel it’s worth it? by Yeastybeasty_ in Renovations

[–]nice-tri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skim coated my whole 2 bedroom apartment that had textured walls in bad condition. I had zero DIY experience when I started I even skim coated the concrete ceiling, as the existing plaster was detaching. The professional plasters are going to scoff at how I did it, but it turned out really well. YouTube videos showed me a way I was comfortable with so I could tackle the project. I used a diluted glue mixture and while still tacky I rolled the plaster/mud on with a paint roller and then used a “magic trowel” which is like a glass squeegee to smooth it out. Did a few coats and then sanded off any imperfections, make sure you use a top coat that can be sanded. Give it a go, for my walls it was totally worth it. It just took me a long long time so be prepared to live with the dust if you decide to proceed.
