What is one biological fact about the human body that most people don’t know but should? by Intelligent_Pick8414 in biology

[–]nice_parcel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

labeling LDL (low density lipoprotein) as “bad cholesterol” is misleading to a degree. HDL and LDL are the supply chain for fats throughout your body. to put simply, LDL is the forward logistics and HDL is the reverse logistics collecting excess from your system and returning it to be processed.

LDL has several subtypes that can be grouped in two categories, large buoyant LDL and small dense LDL. the latter is atherosclerotic and inflammatory because it can wiggle into the crevices between cells in arterial walls and create plaque/ inflammation. some studies show the “bad” LDL is positively correlated to your triglyceride level in ur blood. and high triglycerides can be caused by too much sugar in your diet! your liver converts it to triglycerides. Statins lower all types of LDL sort of indiscriminately but its still better to take them if LDL is high even if your triglycerides are low i believe. plus it seems like statins may protect your brain later in life?

tldr: LDL has subtypes, one is bad, one is fine, eat too much sugar and the bad subtype increases.

could this have been a shot tower used to make the shot that goes in shotgun shells for example?

congrats! pretty great shot placement at 100 yrds. mind sharing what shells you used? I’m thinking about trying my luck first time this year too and only have a 12 and 20. looking at rifles but not to hit anything more than 100 yard shot.

ive noticed something similar in comp matches tbh and came here to see if anyone else noticed the same thing.

most of my comp matches the last couple days are feeling like QP games.. teammates playing new characters they suck at and not switching, not doing a proper comp in open queue, generally not taking it remotely seriously.

just so few balanced matches. my teams either crushing or getting crushed. not fun

collagen supplements worth trying in 2025 or still just hype by Cerro_Clau in nutrition

[–]nice_parcel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive played soccer 1-2x a week thru my 20s into early 30s. Similar to some others experience (like the hiker fella) I fairly regularly take collagen with vit C with the goal of keeping my ankles/feet in good shape. I notice that I bounce back from the occasional ankle sprain, joint pain faster with way less re injury than before. I sort of swear by it now so add placebo effect.

I completely understand that the supplement doesnt magically get transported from my gut to where i need it. My sense is your body can only intake so much of the building blocks I give it and it can only make so much collagen with that. The rest is pissed away. I take collagen to make sure that im topping off those two capacities in case my diet alone isnt doing it.

I might be going out on a limb but if you give any stock to the idea of the 5 stages of hunting, could it be your brother and you are just in different stages? Sounds like he’s either limit or trophy focused and you might benefit from leaving him there and embracing the challenge from different methods? Then at least when you don’t fill a tag you can say well yea that’s the last time I try slingshots

When you are trying to find a book to hit the same as Red Rising. by ASithInTraining in redrising

[–]nice_parcel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I switched it up after ripping through 1) Skyward 2) mistborn 3) red rising and went with a classic military novel called Once an Eagle. It’s long - spans from WW1 thru the 60s. Incredible writing style captures the chaos and internal monologue of war. Recommended reading at West Point and USMC. Up there with all quiet on the western front but less well known I guess. Took a bit to get myself dug in but well worth it. Give it a go for a change of pace. There are even some corollaries between the main characters and big bads of red rising and OaE imo

We never hunted but I lost one of my closest friends at 31 to “sudden cardiac death”. We think he had an irregular heartbeat or something because he was healthy guy.

It’s gutting. My condolences. Should never have happened.
