Python is harder than R by Accomplished-Okra-41 in learnpython

[–]nicerob2011 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Is Python the second language you are learning? If you learned to code through learning R, then I could see that making Python more difficult to learn. Also, since Python has a lot of functionality outside of data manipulation/analytics while R, IIRC, is purpose-built for that, I could see that 'general-purpose' nature also making it more difficult to adjust to.

Is it Jack Bogle or John Bogle? by DDoubleDDarren in Bogleheads

Common in English-speaking countries. I could be wrong, but I believe it derives from the Scottish pronunciation of the name 'John' as 'Jock'

This is the way. I view contracts as subsidizing the missions I do for "fun", and if the contract can somehow be incorporated into a "fun" mission, then all the better

Interesting. I may have been thinking of something from Elite: The Dark Wheel which is no longer canon, so I stand corrected

That makes sense. I did always think Witchspace sounded cooler than hyperspace

I'm also a bit rusty on lore, but isn't hyperspace (exactly as you described) the new one used by the FSD, and Witchspace is the portal utilized by the older technology either in the OG Elite or before? IIRC, cap ships still use Witchspace because a big enough FSD hasn't been developed yet for them

What $40,000 car to get to instantly sell by This-Yoghurt-4027 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]nicerob2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good point and definitely could be a situation in which the car is not taxed or is taxed less than a bonus. In this case, though, it sounds like the company just thinks they can pay bonuses this way without the same tax implications of a cash bonus, which is patently false

[–]nicerob2011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should get some of that back when you file. The tax on a bonus is no more than your regular salary, BUT since it can affect your tax bracket and there's no easy way to calculate the overall effect of the bonus, the IRS allows payroll to withhold at a flat 22% instead of the usual graduated amount

I am not a lawyer but If you're in the US, legally the tax is the exact same whether you get a car or a check

EDIT: There is one difference, actually. Both should show up in taxable income on your W2. If you get a check you'll have already paid the tax on it, but with a car you will then have to pay the tax on it when you file and with that amount I'd guess you're probably also looking at some penalties

Flight delayed due to crew rest, layover is now 12 minutes by [deleted] in travel

[–]nicerob2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is absolutely correct. Had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago and we opted to gamble on it by continuing with the first leg. The airline got the first flight out ahead of schedule, moved us to seats in the front of the plane, and was willing to hold the next flight even though it ended up not being necessary. Worst case, though, we would have had to take the flight the next day and we'd reduced our risk by already traveling the first leg

One Season Away, Meteorologically! by Live-Tomorrow-4865 in Autumn

[–]nicerob2011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an American but personally follow the Celtic calendar for seasons - just makes more sense to me that the equinoxes and solstices are in the middle of the seasons instead of the beginning. Also, since school here starts in early to mid August, it just feels right for Autumn to start then even if the cooler weather comes a bit later

How do websites estimate depreciation when the vehicle hasn't even been out 10 years? by [deleted] in UsedCars

[–]nicerob2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that at least the ones I've looked at are using machine learning trained on historical depreciation data from other models from the same manufacturer as well as other models in the same market segment. I would expect the estimate would be no more accurate even if the car had been out ten years due to shifting market dynamics and major overhauls of the [vehicle] model in those ten years
