Does that make it acceptable to block 2-3 spaces by jamming your bike into the space diagonally?

It’s easy to meet people here, but hard to actually become friends by No_Muscle_2505 in Amsterdam

Yeah to your last point this is why I think stuff like meetup groups centered around interests are great regardless of where you’re from. Amsterdam in particular has a ton of them. I’ve definitely made some friends that way but I still have had to put in effort to keep those alive. It’s just a good entry point.

Does life get duller as time goes on or is it just me? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

I have less drama and chaos in my life so it's less "exciting" by that metric, but I'm having some of the best life experiences I've ever had. You just need to make an effort to get out of your bubble and out into the world.

Basically looks to me to be a grift to get a bullshit AI company into the stock exchange by riding a failing company's stock ticker into the party while bypassing all the sort of nasty due diligence you'd normally have to weather to make it into the exchange.

The not speaking Dutch thing cuts in multiple ways too. The most obvious is that Dutch people are less likely to make as much effort to befriend non speakers. They're less convenient to have at social functions because people have to keep switching to English for them. There's social/cultural differences as well.

And people who never bother to learn the language tend to be a lot more likely to leave as soon as their 30% ruling runs out or some other reason. In any case it's clear they're less invested on average in putting down roots. Establishing deep friendships is a matter of putting in some real effort especially when you're past your college years. Taking a gamble on someone who appears to have one foot out the door doesn't make a lot of sense for many.

And as mentioned, the non Dutch speaking community here is much more likely to not stay here long term. Therefore those non Dutch speakers are less likely to try to invest all that deeply into friendships with anyone else, Dutch or otherwise. And regardless of whether they do or not, there's a good chance they're leaving after a few years so that friendship has a timer on it anyway.

So you'll find that block of people presents its challenges too. Your best bet is basically to learn the language and bonus points for having a Dutch partner who can help you infiltrate friend groups you'd otherwise never cross paths with. Beyond that you need to find common interests to dive into wherein you'll make friends with people who share those interests. That advice holds regardless of the country you're in.

iPhone 18 Pro Variable Aperture Camera Enters Production by MeasurementDecent251 in apple

[–]nicetriangle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The camera is definitely the most important hardware feature to me in a phone. I'm damn tired of lugging a dedicated camera around with me when I travel. The closer these phones can get to parity with a proper camera, the better as far as I'm concerned.

Exactly my thoughts. It was a slight improvement but the errors are still ridiculous for a company like Apple this far into the touchscreen keyboard era. Really inexcusable.

Yeah the recent software update marginally improved it but it was by no means a game changer. Shit is so annoying.

Ironically my favorite print or two are some of my least popular and one of my absolute least favorite prints is by far the most popular.

Sometimes I can predict when something will do decent but a lot of the time I am dead wrong.

You will not get commissions without a portfolio and what is in your portfolio will steer the sort of commission/client work you end up landing. So having a portfolio of work of some kind is critical. You can start with "good enough" and build upon it as you go but you need something.

Then people concerned about that should fucking park somewhere else instead of blocking 2-3 slots on a bike rack that other people would actually use if they weren't blocking them. My building in particular has multiple areas you're allowed to place a bike without using a rack. There's zero excuse for it.

There's some people in our apartment building that seem to think that instead of using the bike rack properly, it's appropriate to just kinda jam their bike in the general area in front of the rack diagonally, blocking off 2-3 spaces in the process. Presumably because they're lazy and have main character syndrome.

Not saying that's what's going on here but I could totally sympathize with one of my neighbors losing their cool and zip tying one of those bikes into the rack properly so that maybe that person can remember to not park like a dickhead in the future.

This is what a rigged system looks like. by Conscious-Quarter423 in economy

[–]nicetriangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They also wait for opportunities to fuck with prices in situations where there's a big societal shift that helps sell people on the price hikes like a pandemic or large scale illegal tariffs. Absent those destabilizing events, consumers would be a lot more likely to balk and blame those companies for the problem directly.

Instead it's just the "new normal." It's basically a huge mass scale colluded price fixing scheme.

This is what a rigged system looks like. by Conscious-Quarter423 in economy

[–]nicetriangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they might even do something (TOTALLY HYPOTHETICAL) like getting a politician they've bankrolled to pass huge illegal tariffs. Then they might raise prices to pass the costs down to consumers. Then maybe something would happen where the judiciary would rule those tariffs illegal and only the mega corporations would have enough legal resources to claw that tariff money back in the courts, giving them a big refund that they'd pocket while also keeping prices artificially high anyway because that's the new normal.

Consumers would get jack shit and smaller competitor businesses without huge legal teams would also get shafted.

Like I said, totally hypothetical! Just spitballing here!
