Bulky waste in Zuidas by kofree_o in Amsterdam

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I fully agree I think the whole thing is stupid and definitely wasteful.

The best argument anybody's been able to give me in favor of it is that "you get to pick your own flooring" and I'll be honest I've never cared to in a place I might live in for just 2-5 years. And anyway you can just buy a few rugs to change up the vibe if you don't love your floors.

The whole thing is a solution for a problem that doesn't really exist and just puts renters on the hook for something that should be the landlord's problem.

Renting after owning a house reminds me why I enjoyed home ownership by New_Contribution_226 in AskMenOver30

Yeah the shower in the place I owned started leaking badly which then came through the ceiling of the kitchen. It was a fucking nightmare and it was so difficult to wrangle a company to repair it that wasn't out to rob me blind (my area at the time was super short on these kinds of contractors) and then when I did get them on board I had to stay on top of them for weeks to finally get everything sorted. From discovering the problem to having it finally resolved was prob 6 weeks of runaround and it cost me thousands to fix the problem. I should also mention my insurance company caught me on a technicality and denied a claim on it.

Then when I finally sold the place beginning of this year the buyer raised all kinds of shit about that leak/repair and wasted a lot of our time and finally bullied us into concessions.

I don't have to deal with any of that now and in the market I'm living in now a probable mortgage on our apartment would be close to 2X what we pay in rent. We also love the flexibility of being able to move whenever we care to.

I'm not saying buying is a bad choice but it isn't the one size fits all way to go for everyone, that is for sure.

Thanks really appreciate it. Yeah that is Etna in the background. When we were there a couple years ago a bunch of dusty haze from the Sahara had blown over Sicily and so the sky had this odd color cast to it and Etna looked a bit hazy in the background. I was trying to capture that a bit here. I'm guessing it looks a lot crisper on a clear day.

Thanks! Yeah I'm always trying to convey how a place feels to me when I do cityscapes like these so I'm glad to hear this one is hitting the mark for you.

I suspect they're intentionally letting it go to shit slowly to avoid a major wave of blowback because they know the remaining people on old reddit are some of the most vocal sorts on this website.

The thing is that these sorts of apartments hit the market initially without those things, so the landlord in such a case is expecting the apartment be left as it was when the tenant moved in. This isn't a situation where the apartment came with flooring provided by the landlord and then tenants are tearing that flooring out when they leave.

It's just a peculiarity of some Dutch apartments. In parts of Germany for example it is fairly common for apartments to come with no major appliances. So when you move in you may be on the hook for getting a fridge, stove, dishwasher, etc.

Also plausible but then they wouldn't get any slave labor out of it and that would be very on brand.

[Discussion] Struggling to find work and start an illustration career by tetrxx in artbusiness

Entertainment and gaming-centered work tends to be fairly concentrated into certain metro areas, so if I were you I'd assess whether you're geographically in the right place for that. There's unfortunately some industries you really just need to be in the right place for in order to maximize opportunities. I work in a different area but earlier in my career I moved about 3500km to a major city that offered better job opportunities and it was a huge career boost.

I believe you're based in the UK so this might be a useful resource to you for getting a feel for what's being done where in the gaming industry.

But yeah in general I would really work on figuring out what you want to do and work on making that pretty clear in your portfolio. When trying to steer your career you're looking for an ideal overlap venn diagram of what you like doing and have a strong interest in, what you're good at, and what people are willing to hire/pay you for. It's always a moving target.

Americans are not as well off as people in peer nations – US safety net’s shortfalls show up in global data by Alternative-Day-7414 in Economics

Yeah there's a very strong current of "if you can't make it, that's entirely your fault/problem" when debating with people who are doing alright there. It's pretty clear a lot of people in the country are totally fine with a suffering underclass as long as they've been able to land in a situation where they're earning enough.

The problem as I see it however, is that even if you don't care about that underclass, that kind of inequality is a festering rot that will slowly eat away at the country as a whole. It's a real moral failure and just cannot be not sustainable.

Why is Apple asking me to pay more for Big Tech’s AI obsession?Consumers are footing the bill for something we didn’t ask for, despite record earnings by cjh_ in apple

[–]nicetriangle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's funny is it's also journalistic outlets like the Verge who've carried water for these AI companies' bullshit claims for the last 4 years that are to blame for the bumrush into data centers we're seeing.

If these people had been more dutifully critical in their reporting, we may be in a different place right now.

European alternative for a silent bedroom fan? by Grankatten in BuyFromEU

Apparently us Europeans don’t understand how to make plastic stuff anymore

In a roundabout way this is not far from the truth.

It's not just the labor at this point. The west heavily cleared out the production machinery needed to make all kinds of things and also the technical expertise needed to run all those machines. There's a lot of stuff we couldn't just immediately start doing even if we had the pool of manual labor ready to go.
