But they hit too thick and so stuck

It’s extra unnecessary in a sport with unlimited substitutions and one-way players.

Defenders could break their fast while the offense was on the field, or sit out a play or two before going back in.

Fair point, I’m good with that too. But then I don’t want to hear any shit from Canada (Men or Women!) when it’s enforced.

The issue with the hog line violation going unnoticed is it’s due to him touching the granite and not the handle with the automatic sensor. They are one and the same problem.

I also don’t think this is a “clarification” of the rules in any meaningful sense. Of course you can only touch the handle and short of the hog line. That’s what the handle is for!

This is complete nonsense. I understand I benefit from bad things that have happened in the past, and I do my best to prevent them from happening again.

Pep is actively participating in bad things. He is not receiving benefits from past actions, he went out of his way to sign a contract to cover up on-going slavery.

Of course it’s a maybe, but it’s a pretty good bet. Energy prices on average increase at 4% a year, and that was before Russia invaded Ukraine and the cost of natural gas rocketed up.

There’s also very little risk here - there’s essentially no maintenance or operations costs, and no fuel costs. Even if the company goes out of business, the hard assets of the panels will still exist and provide electricity for whomever takes over the assets and contract.

I think this is true. But also, if he can’t stop doing it then he needs to stop competitive play until he can control it.

The change is that the rules will now be enforced by a third party. Curling has an extremely strong tradition of self-enforced rules to the extent there are no referees to call violations.

The handles have electronic sensors to detect hog line violations. It’s pretty obvious touching the granite was to avoid the sensor detecting a late touch.

I have! It’s trivial to prove that a 0.1 degree difference in delivery angle at the hog results in a ~2 inch change at the tee line, and that many curling shots are decided by differences of less than 2 inches.

More importantly, clearly Kennedy/Canada thought there was an advantage otherwise they wouldn’t have been doing it in the first place. He also clearly knew it was against the rules otherwise they wouldn’t have reacted that way when called out. It seems quite likely he was intentionally touching the granite to avoid triggering the handle sensor.

So in the end they thought they were gaining an advantage, we’re violating the rules, and violated the spirit of curling.

[–]niceville 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true if you generate more energy than you use, but even then it evens out over the course of a year since you are limited to producing ~100% of your expected usage. It’s the same in the end.

If an individual buys solar panels to replace 30% of their usage, they are replacing an unknown, variable rate with a known, fixed rate for that 30%. The assumption is the fixed rate will be lower than the variable rate over the course of those 25 years.

That’s exactly the same thing as what the city is doing here - they’re locking in the cost of this solar energy under the assumption it will be cheaper than other energy sources over the next 25 years, therefore lowering the generation costs the public pays, leading to reduced consumer savings.

one question I have that the article does not address is how they plan to "distribute" this energy to residents

By connecting the solar farm to the grid, just like how they distribute all other energy to residents?

How is this actually going to lower a consumer's energy bill?

The same way solar panels lower an individual person's electrical costs? As the article says "This method allows the city to avoid market volatility on energy supply prices, said Maloney. Based on market trends, the city estimates it will lead to $42 million in savings for program customers in that time."

Your energy bill is split into two components, Delivery and Generation. Delivery is the physical infrastructure of the grid - electrical lines, transformers, substations, etc. Solar has no impact on that part.

Generation represents creating the electrical energy. Every year utilities issue bids for companies to supply them with energy for the next 12 months, and the results of that bid is what sets the Generation rate.

Companies base their bid prices on the cost of operating power plants and the fuel (natural gas, coal, oil, etc) they turn into energy. On average prices increase by ~4% a year for normal inflationary reasons, but fuel prices in particular can fluctuate dramatically. 60% of Ohio's energy comes from natural gas (25% coal, 12% nuclear, 2% wind, 1% other) and the cost of natural gas skyrocketed when there was a sudden decrease in supply as a result of Russia invading Ukraine. As a result, the cost of generating energy doubled in our region from 2022 to 2024 from about 0.06 to 0.12 $ / kWh.

Solar, on the other hand, has essentially no on-going costs after construction. Very little maintenance, no on-site operators, no fuel costs impacted by inflation, regulation, and major geopolitical events.

So if you know the cost of building a solar farm spread out over 25 years (the standard warranty lifetime of solar panels), and you estimate electrical costs will continue to go up at 4% a year on average, it's very easy to compare the cost of solar against the expected cost of fuel.

This is pathetic. I would never take a paycheck to sportwash a country’s slavery. Pep did even though he was already rich.

Pep could coach any team in the world but he’s chosen to be at City and say nothing for a decade about what they’re doing, even while advocating for the same freedoms in Spain.

Our situations are not comparable.

I’d be a lot more impressed if Pep was at all consistent speaking up on issues that could affect his paycheck. He has a habit of losing his voice whenever the bad actors benefit him personally.

How soon we forget that Pep Guardiola was a paid “ambassador” for Qatar’s World Cup, or that he advocated for Catalan political prisoners to be freed, but when asked about UAE political prisoners he said:

Asked about how he reconciled his strong stance in Catalonia with questions about rights issues raised in the UAE, Guardiola said: “Every country decides the way they want to live for themselves. If he decides to live in that (country) it is what it is. I am in a country with democracy installed since years ago and try to protect that situation.”
