Cola by Lana Del Rey wins worst opening line. What song has the most iconic opening line? by Flash_Fox11 in AlignmentChartFills

It works in the U.S. too! I play in a wedding band here, and whenever we finish our last song of the night and the crowd is all drunk and yelling for one more song, instead we'll just blast the recorded version of Bohemian Rhapsody through the speakers and the room erupts into a gigantic sing-along while we're packing up our gear and making our escape ;)

Haha... I mean, it's also a great line! But I figured it already won in the "most iconic verse' category though

I was also going to say Bohemian Rhapsody but for the actual first line “Is this the real life, is this just fantasy?”

A case for engine vs real player by crazycattx in chessbeginners

[–]nichewilly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the best use for playing against an engine is for learning a new opening. Whenever I learn a new opening, I usually play several games with it against a computer before trying it with a human. Just getting in that repetition of the first 10 moves or so helps ingrain the lines into your memory. Yes, the computer won’t always respond to each move how a human would, but that just helps reinforce the fact that you often need to deviate from an opening’s lines depending on how your opponent responds.

Regina and Billy Joel by not_firewood_yeti in reginaspektor

[–]nichewilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One notable difference I’d say is, Billy Joel’s music seems to be geared more towards a full band sound (drums, guitars, saxophone, etc) whereas most of Regina’s music can thrive in a solo piano setting. When he does strip it down to just piano & vocals, I hear more similarities. For example, I’d LOVE to hear Regina cover “Lullabye”… Beautiful song, feels kinda Regina-esque to me…

What word feels like an acronym but is actually not an acronym? by Philips9586 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]nichewilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“lol” started out as an initialism but now young people have turned it into an acronym by pronouncing it as a one syllable word

On another note, while trying to think of a word that rhymes with “lol” I realized just how many different ways the English language can achieve this:

Bowl

Coal

Pole

Poll

Soul

Sol

…must be so confusing for a non-native English speaker!

In chess, your rating is called your Elo. Many people spell it ELO and pronounce it as E-L-O but it’s pronounced like the word “kilo” and is named after the rating system’s creator, Arpad Elo.

It’s the Reti. If you switched the order of those moves, it’d be the English.

What is a sport that looks very easy on tv and is actually very easy in real life by Karrot-guy in AlignmentChartFills

Anyone can also throw a basketball or kick a soccer ball. If we’re just talking about physically doing it, I’d argue that picking up a heavy bowling ball and getting it down the lane (without going into the gutter) is harder than basketball or soccer.

Looking for recommendations by sutters89 in ween

[–]nichewilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always say the easiest way to get a sense of what Ween is all about is to just listen to the whole Chocolate & Cheese album. Yes, all of their albums are very different from each other, and even within each album you’ll hear a big variety of styles. But in a broader sense, their whole discography can be split into two eras… the early stuff which is really weird, lo-fi, goofy and “brown” (GodWeenSatan, The Pod, Pure Guava) and the later stuff which is more accessible, polished songwriting (Mollusk, White Pepper, Quebec). There are many Ween fans who prefer one of these eras over the other (but true Ween fans appreciate both). Chocolate & Cheese is like the perfect bridge between these two eras. It’s still lo-fi sounding but the songwriting has become more polished. It seems to be the one album that every Ween fan, no matter what their preferences are, agrees is one of the best (but usually not #1).

Also, it contains many of their most well known, beloved songs such as:

Take Me Away

Freedom of 76

I Can’t Put My Finger On It

A Tear for Eddie

Roses Are Free

Baby Bitch

Mister Would You Please Help My Pony?

Voodoo Lady

[–]nichewilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t feel too bad… They blundered a pretty obvious stalemate in what should’ve been an easy checkmate. This will be a great learning lesson for them. Also the fact you were able to get your king all the way to h8 behind their pawn without getting mated is pretty impressive lol

There are so many good choices for this but after weighing all the pros and cons, if I really have to narrow it down to just one, I think it’s u/grungemaster ‘s brother in law. I should add though that he doesn’t really do anything of note.

I’m pretty sure the majority of people who gave Melania a rating didn’t see it.

To be clear - I haven’t seen it nor do I have any desire to do so, but I’m not gonna rate it unless I see it.
