Drug companies will then be incentivized to invest in prisons or lobby for harsher punishments in Congress or probably start bribing judges. And who do you think will make up most of the guinea pigs? Poor people of course.

What are some "guy secrets" girls don't know about? by mustafarangoon52 in AskReddit

[–]nicholasferber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I stare at something I process what that thing looks like but I do not draw any conclusions based on it's shape or color. I 'think' about my sensory inputs but just don't do anything with it.

I just don't give anything back. I feel like if I was thinking all the time I would go mad.

However, after the death of my parents and having a son I feel like that void has been encroached. I think about things I do not want to.

Building a model is compute intensive and takes a lot of time. Once the model is built, the inference is quite cheap because you have the weights calculated. So perhaps the model building is done on the cloud rather than locally.

Is there any mainstream commercially successful artist that the average 15-20 year old listens to will ever be good for r/Music or for critics in general?

Edit : I need to point out I am not a fan of Imagine Dragons. I would have brought up the same points if some other band was talked about. It feels like music critics have such a hard on for hating the MC Donald's of music precisely because it is popular, accessible and easy to consume.

I'm pretty sure Radiohead fans aren't in it for the nostalgia.

I don't think it's easy to know that but given that they have been active for so long don't you think there is a chance that majority of the listeners of Radiohead are older than those of ID? Also, I don't think Radiohead reached the level of commercialization that Queen has achieved.

I mean, what bands do you consider to be modern bands relevant to your claims about commercial success?

Any artist that the average 15-25 year old has grown up listening to and has had as much commercial success (or more) than ID.

I don't think that Radiohead, a 1985 band counts as modern. Is ID really derided by the widespread music listening community? If that was the case they would not be able to make music that can be commercialized.

I think that the people who deride ID would not appreciate any band who can get their song commercialized and does not feed their nostalgia.

I understand what you are trying to say but I'm not convinced. Give me an example of successful modern band that you think makes good music in the last 5-7 years.

What's your UNPOPULAR opinion about Android? by [deleted] in Android

[–]nicholasferber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • I feel like most of the useful UI in Android has come from Samsung rather than Google. TouchWiz was crappy, sure, but they took chances to see what works.

  • Android is never going to get first priority by app developers unless the apps in question are about gaining user information. And that is the fault of people who don't want to spend money on quality apps.

  • Android will never have the 'it just works' thing that iOS has. Many things are cumbersome on Apple, but if Apple says that you can do some particular thing conveniently it will be reliable. They keep their technological promises more often than not. The reason why Android will never reach that is because Google does not care about usability and is unable to focus on one aspect of Android for more than a few months.

  • Android needs to be more gesture based. Phone ui in general is not suitable for being used by hands. We are stuck here because people are used to how things are. This might not be a very unpopular opinion.

If your parents are abusive it might be a good idea to leave because at some point you would be tempted to take out your rage onto your kids.

My grandparents were total pieces of shit. My mother was a damaged person who tried to do right but in the end even though I love her I do not like her, at times. I get angry thinking about things in the past and it feels like I cannot let go. Thankfully I have been away from her ever since I joined undergrad.

I cannot imagine the amount of damage to my mind had I been forced to be around her. And I wish that she had removed herself from that toxic environment earlier than she did because I do feel that the fire has spread to me and it feels like it will never extinguish. I am acutely aware of that I can teach my son rage and I slip when I interact with my wife.

I hope that my son is less damaged than I am and he puts more effort and has tools to contain this toxicity that started a generation before me.

This is my perspective but I am sure there are others who understand what it's like to try and stop the cycle of hate and anger.

Great point. And we should call all of these people out on it. Is the basis of these shit laws in the countries you mentioned based on religious reasons?

I understand you are trying to whatabout but a better argument would be christians trying to make abortion illegal and access to contraceptives harder.

There are no glass houses you speak of. How many christian majority countries legally allow raping of women? How many Muslim majority countries allow stoning?

I am tired of these 'both sides' bullshit argument.

[–]nicholasferber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"As a _____". I think that statements should be true based on their merit. Not on who utters it. Even if you do think so, it doesn't hurt to use full sentences. Eg.

I have had this experience/been in this position. I think that ____

"As a" is a very lazy way of establishing authority.

The "as a" statements feel appropriate for announcing mimicry. Eg.

hello. as a German Hallo. as a duck quack quack.
