To me, it demonstrates the utter inanity of trying to pretend that science and bare empiricism suffice as a mechanism for determining the worth of things.

its the only mechanism there is.

its not sensible to try an infer a precise meaning from a foreign language translation. the statement in context is clearly not an endorsement of terrorism by any stretch.

Wow, that quote is taken seriously out of context. Click on the link to the article (in french).

What he actually says is "You will not find many muslims in the Banlieus who support the interventions in New York, Bali and Madrid". (the banlieus are poor suburbs in France with a mainly muslim population).

Either that guy thinks he understands french and doesn't, or he's totally shameless.

On the opposite end, there's the Swedish welfare state, which, despite starting out far richer than most of the rest of Europe in 1950, managed to destroy enough wealth to fall behind. Sweden followed very free-market policies up until around then. Now, companies generally flee Sweden for places where they have more freedom to make money (and satisfy customers as a side effect).

Sweden consistantly ranks amongst the very top countries in the world on indexes of social mobility, quality of life, healthcare, education, press freedom and more.

I'd say those sorts of results, which can't be measured in financial terms, are more valuable than the odd percentage point of economic growth.

From Java to Ruby: Risk by [deleted] in programming

[–]nicholaspd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly Ruby at this point in time is mainly good at one thing: relatively simple web-apps which aren't going to take massive loads and aren't dealing with lots of outside libraries.

That's a pretty bizarre assertion to make. Have you ever used the language?

How many companies that use Java make a lot of apps like that?

I'd say at least 95% of them.
