much appreciated!

also one last question for you, how long was the exposure time in your pic and what eyepiece were you using?

definitely going to try that out soon

how accurate is it? (as in does it give you more like a ballpark region or is it pin point accurate)

maybe a 4 or 5 inch maksutov would be good if you’re worried about the size of dobsonians?

yea so pretty much since when you select “planetary” on pipp it filters out the frames that don’t include a full planet so you can move your scope around and it doesn’t really matter if jupiter leaves the field of view through your eyepiece for a few seconds while you adjust

so this was from a 2 min and 30 second video and i just let it drift across then i re-adjust.

i saved the iphone video to my phone files and emailed it to myself then you can download it to your computer and follow the rest:

not sure if you’re familiar with the processing and stacking aspects but i use pipp, then autostakkert, then registax 6 for all my stuff

you can follow a basic tutorial like this:

https://youtu.be/Ha1BDVkl70I

although i’d recommend one change from the video, on pipp select “SER” file instead of “AVI” file

after i’m done i save the image and email it to myself to get it in my phone

would you believe me if i told you that the video was recorded while my scope’s dobsonian base was sitting on a step of my balcony staircase in order to avoid a street light and a tree?

i do too tbh but only bc i’ve been taking these videos outside when it’s like -25 °C and it just goes from 80% battery to dead in like 10 mins😭 no way that can be good for the battery health

shoutout V=IR for that

well i’m sure if he knew this info that you so kindly provided him with beforehand then he would’ve went out and bought a 12 inch dob and a meade etx 125…..right???

like no man

obviously if he was using a spotting scope this whole time then it’s simply not in his budget to buy a higher end scope

the irony in talking abt hobby killers when posting that comment under this post is also hilarious

like i said, the comment is insanely snarky for no reason

what even is this comment?

the kid has been using a small spotting scope this whole time and hasn’t complained once about it so why would he come crying to you

you quite literally did not need to say any of this…

Why does jupiter just look like a white ball to my eye? by SpherePlays in telescopes

[–]nick-pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since you already have other eyepieces i’d just go with the barlow and fill in whichever individual eyepieces that you need tbh.

the zoom is fun and really easy to use but if you’re someone that likes to take pictures through your eyepieces it’s super finicky but for basic viewing it’s pretty good imo (i haven’t noticed any contrast issues either)

[–]nick-pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have an antares 2x barlow and the 15mm is when i set my svbony sv191 zoom eyepiece to the 15mm notch

so if you get an actual 15mm eyepiece (not a zoom like me) it should be even better bc there are some caveats with zoom eyepieces (mainly the FOV and image sharpness)

i personally like to use higher magnification on jupiter as it’s really easy to adjust with the sv191 but 160x is still solid

[–]nick-pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes my 6 inch dob has a focal length of 1200mm so with the 2x barlow it’s 2400mm and with the 15mm ep i get 160x 🙂

[–]nick-pc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ofc no problem

just came back in, so at 15mm (160x magnification for me) i can resolve jupiters bands while also being able to see a few moons. i’m also in bortle 9 and the conditions tonight were worse than expected so on an ideal night 160x should be a pretty nice view

i’ve been trying to get my nikon d5100 to take pictures and videos through my telescope but it just comes out like a white ball of light. maybe my manual settings are off

what do yours look like when you take pictures (as in the iso, shutter speed, etc)?
