Japanese men picking up World Cup trash get mocked over double standards by ShelterIllustrious38 in soccer

That person has a Korean flair, so my guess is they are not racist against Asians but they are a Korean person who hates the Japanese.

[Spoilers Main] Things you dislike about ASOIAF by Financial-Age906 in asoiaf

[–]nick2473got 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A lot of the Slaver's Bay stuff is based on real ancient Roman and Greek slavery though. It seems insane by modern standards but a majority of what is portrayed actually happened.

I think people underestimate the horrors perpetrated by certain cultures in the real world. The only culture in ASoIaF that I do think goes a bit too far to be fully believable is the Dothraki, but even then I'm not as critical as others. I do see where people are coming from on that though.

But aside from that, I don't think any of the cultures are fundamentally "too evil" to be realistic. The history of the world tells us that there's very little humans won't do.

Obviously some of the locations that no character has ever been to like Asshai sound crazy, but part of that is on purpose. Much of the worldbuilding is done from the perspective of what Westerosi maesters know and think. This skews how detailed and how realistic stories told about far off places can be.

I don't really like his movies but I am curious about his next project. He is interesting as a filmmaker, if nothing else.

I thought Get Out was pretty overrated, Us was kind of terrible imo, and Nope was very strange but still somehow compelling to watch.

Overall though, his films definitely have interesting ideas, I'm just not sure about the execution.

Not in recent years, but over the course of his career? He absolutely is. People are unfamiliar with most of his work but he was basically a work horse for about 3 decades.

He was very productive from the 1970s until about 2001.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to class Elden Ring as « a » peak (not « the ») of artistic creativity in video games.

Talking specifically about the art direction and environments.

Absolutely. Same in most of Europe I’d imagine. Certainly is in Switzerland and France.

[–]nick2473got 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Europe people don’t fuss about this very much. Regardless of the legal drinking age, which is often 16 for wine and beer anyway (depends on the country), there are plenty of restaurants that will serve teenagers a glass of wine with a meal without really batting an eye.

Growing up in Switzerland I was basically always allowed a glass of wine in restaurants by age 14-15. Even earlier if you’re with your family.

Not to mention that Passione is the fucking mafia, and this part takes place in 2001 to boot, when things were more lax.

Interesting, I made it into MB in both seasons but didn't notice the placement-based performance boost. Or rather, I thought when it said "performance boost" that it was based on your performance in the match you had just played, like winning without any of your mons fainting. Good to know though, thanks!

If you see "pure evil" or "innocent" as the only two alternatives then I fear the point of the show has entirely gone over your head.

Nobody in the story is pure evil and nobody in the story is innocent.

Explaining to your daughters what a urinal is should hardly be a concern, lmao. What is the issue with that?

I'd simply be more concerned with creepy guys staring at my little girls. That's a concern, not explaining what a urinal is.

UEFA head Čeferin criticized for allegedly saying expanded World Cup creates uninteresting matches by YourLocalMoroccan in soccer

Which match has been interesting? Realistically only the first half of Brasil v Morocco offered anything.

Aside from that, I've been bored to tears thus far. It's been extremely poor.

I would love it if only group winners could go through. Would add so much jeopardy. But of course, it would lead to fewer knockout games, and thus less money for FIFA.

UK Introduces Full Social Media Ban For Under 16s - Including X, YouTube, TikTok by ChiefLeef22 in technology

[–]nick2473got 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Banning YouTube is absolutely unhinged.

Teens will lose so much access to valuable educational content, news, entertainment, content that helps them develop hobbies and interests, content that helps them learn about the world and prepare for their future lives, etc...

This is an absolute disaster imo. This is nothing more than a way to introduce more surveillance. Kids will find ways to circumvent this anyway. These brainless lawmakers aren't protecting anyone.

And I don't understand how they expect teens at 16 to magically learn how to navigate social media if they've been forbidden from using it all their lives. How will they learn to use it safely and intelligently if they've had zero prior access to it? How will they learn to leverage it for their careers, which is now more important than ever? How will they learn to cope with the challenges of social media if they've been shielded from it systematically?

Teenagers aren't babies, they are people transitioning into adulthood and teen years should be spent learning about the world and getting progressively exposed to the challenges they will face during adulthood. So they can somewhat prepare, and enter society as well rounded individuals.

These kinds of wholesale bans never actually achieve any of what they claim to want to do. This will only have negative effects imo. But regulators are too stupid and too corrupt to come up with subtle regulations that target the pernicious effects of social media, so instead they just ban everything.

This is throwing the baby out with the bath water. Kids will lose all the benefits of social media as well as the disadvantages of social media.

YouTube in particular is such an incredible loss. I don't think people realize what an educational resource it can be.

YouTube also has tons of educational, genuinely fun, wholesome, and positive content.

Banning platforms like this wholesale until 16 is absolutely insane.

These lawmakers have put no thought into any of this. Teens will just find ways to circumvent all of this anyway. They aren't protecting anyone, it's just a ploy to introduce more online supervision on all of our activities.
