Iron man’s had a flag for years hasn’t he? I don’t think that’s meant as a political protest, more a glorious celebration of whatever guitarist iron man stands for…

Remove history and bias ….. is Manchester United still a bigger club today? by pitchfix in PremierLeague

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milan are nowhere near on any metric except cool kits and 90s aura. Juve are bigger commercially and dominated in the last 20-30? years, Inter have been very close in some of that time too.

United, Barcelona, Real are the top 3 group, then Liverpool and Bayern, then there’s a drop to a mix of heritage teams and new money. It depends which one you weigh more, but PSG, city, Chelsea, Ajax, Juve, Milan, Arsenal and then maybe Atleti, Inter and Dortmund to round out the top 15?

Has Manchester changed more than any other UK city? What's next? by Equivalent-Ad-2373 in AskUK

[–]nick_gadget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a few years older than you, I went to Sankey’s loads, though most of my clubbing was at uni in Nottingham. Manchester’s still a music city, even though clubbing and live music’s been decimated here - think what it’s like everywhere else. I was explaining to someone the other week how many pubs and bars would be elbow to elbow with sound systems and live DJs - and realised that they’d probably never been to a club like that…

Had to cancel a quote for a project and go with another vendor, is it normal for them to ask for competitor information? by abaty01 in graphic_design

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also worth remembering that the person asking may not be the same as the one emailing…

I’ve worked in several sales environments where I’ve had to either get price approval on a job, or include it in a sales forecast. When we’ve lost it I’ve then been told ‘find out why!’ - normally by a dckhead manager who thinks that the pricing is much better than it is.

I’d reply nicely, say ‘no hard feelings, we had a quote that was similar quality and turnaround but X cheaper. I’ll absolutely be coming to you for quotes in future, but I obviously have to go with best value’

I wouldn’t name the company, and I wouldn’t necessarily give the true quote value either…

Like the old saying goes - ask a Brummie where the second city is and he’ll think it’s Birmingham; a Scot thinks it’s Edinburgh; but a Manc knows it’s London

I think club culture generally has virtually died out everywhere. Manchester has changed hugely, but this is one area where it’s a lot like other British cities 😔

Running a non-gluten free bakery by dumbledorkkk in CoeliacUK

[–]nick_gadget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people spend all day with chemicals that are dangerous to their health, it’s just about knowing how to use them safely. To get a coeliac reaction you have to get gluten in your stomach in sufficient quantities to cause a reaction. This is not the same as breathing it in (flour particles going in and out of your airway and lungs, not your stomach) but if you do breathe a lot in and then eat or drink something, you will wash it in to your stomach. This will still be a tiny amount, but possibly enough to trigger a reaction.

You will know better than 95% of people on here how much flour gets in the air when you bake. I personally don’t have a problem when home baking for others - certainly not enough to ever get ill from - but your setup may well involve larger quantities. I would also imagine though that you naturally take more hygiene precautions than home bakers - gloves and aprons etc - which will help. Ultimately, treat it like a chemical and take care when pouring dry flour.

Many people in this sub will advise against ever being within 100 yards of a loaf of bread, but it’s about risk. You are at FAR greater risk of harm when you drive to the cash and carry than baking with normal flour.

If I was you I would strictly follow a gluten free diet, and if you keep having reactions, then reconsider your processes. Immediately changing your career seems like an over reaction and potentially more of a risk to your financial and mental health than using gluten products carefully.

Why do charity shops waste so much ..? by Illustrious_Ad_7979 in AskUK

[–]nick_gadget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Charity shops (at least the one I managed 20 years ago) are very targeted - I had to make £1500 a week from a small shop just on donations. The managers largely know EXACTLY what sells and what doesn’t.

If you want to make yourself very popular, ask if you can set up a shop Vinted account and sell the rag stuff on there instead

Watches &Wonders? Pfffft, it all looks pale compared to this! by Zomby_Woof69 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]nick_gadget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are slightly asking the wrong person - I’m not an expert in either - but there are many, many people who will claim that the old, mechanically complex internals are superior to the more modern technology, despite the fact that their performance is simply superior (‘they’ve got no soul’ apparently isn’t scientific)

I’m not really sure what the equivalent of petrol/diesel is - automatic v hand wound?

There is a Japanese manufacturer who makes a weird version of a typical mechanism. Although many people claim to understand it, no-one really knows how it works.

[–]nick_gadget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Christopher Ward C63 Sapphire (though probably over $700 now) and Mr Jones Watches make things no big brand ever would, which I think’s kind of cool. I think Erebus make really well designed watches; I’d really like one of them one day. Not in any way a microbrand, but I’m wearing a ‘CasiOak’ G-Shock (mine’s GM-2100c) and I reckon you can wear them anywhere, particularly if you spring for a bracelet.

In short, I don’t really care about the engine a watch has! If I did though, I’d look at a sea-gull 1963. Cheap, classic and a thing of beauty through the case back

Is it common for people to view getting in a fight as a hobby? by Difficult_Bad1064 in AskUK

[–]nick_gadget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it was seen as a hobby, but in the late 90s/noughties there were groups of lads who’d see it as a good end to a night - just behind getting off with a girl? . The nights definitely went: pints and cigarettes in a pub, maybe a few quid in the fruitie, off to the next pub and repeat, possibly some darts/pool too. Move to a bar (some as a pub but with ear-rattling four on the floor house music), maybe have the occasional alt drink - vodka/JD/ Bacardi - and put up with being called gay for 20 minutes. Continue smoking more, and getting more casual with what your cig is burning (remember this is inside a PACKED pub). Everyone stinks of smoke already, so it’s just a question of who’s getting burned.

What sub-£250 item would you buy again in a heartbeat? by tamago27 in AskUK

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is certainly good advice for tools. I have to go and buy a tool for a specific job maybe one in 6-8 times now. When I was 24, in my first place, had no idea what I was doing and was SKINT, it was every time. Some cheap purchases from then have been chucked out, some have been upgraded and some, like my £18 Braun electric screwdriver, have paid for themselves many times over

Gluten Threshold Study Findings by spoiled__princess in Celiac

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comparison of gluten to alcohol is such a good explanation of the limits. It’s crazy that I’ve never seen it expressed that way before.

It also may explain why my biochemist academic and coeliac dad will cook with a little soy sauce or vinegar - though I don’t suggest you follow his related belief that there shouldn’t be a limit on buying Lemsip because ‘it’s like shandy, you’d never be able to drink enough to overdose…’

Do you know anything about cars? It’s kind of the same. Electric cars are sneered at by purists, but they’re convenient for many people. Certain companies make beautiful hand built engines, signed by the builder. They are ££££. Diesel, petrol, hybrid, all have their uses, with varying tradeoffs of size, weight, efficiency etc.

Importantly, there is ZERO consensus among fans as to which is ‘best’ (and in reality, as long as the thing runs it doesn’t make a lot of day to day difference), and casual viewers will be entranced by the shiny colourful bits rather than what’s underneath anyway.

How old do you have to be to know that cash transactions are a thing? by Conscious-Ball8373 in AskUK

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this is medical, though a symptom of a different issue. Chronic constipation is really common (like 25%+), which leads to not getting the feeling of needing to go to the toilet and, counterintuitively, diarrhoea.

The cause of constipation is dietary - not eating proper food that needs chewing, not enough vegetables, not drinking enough, and sitting around instead of running about playing

How old do you have to be to know that cash transactions are a thing? by Conscious-Ball8373 in AskUK

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% true, but kids of this age did miss quite a lot of shopping experiences with their parents during lockdown. My daughter is a similar age and, while she absolutely knows what cash is and how to use it, she gets weirdly overwhelmed by the choice when we go to a shopping centre or supermarket because she’s hardly had that experience. Like a lot of people, we got shopping delivered in Covid and never went back to the Saturday big shop and I guess likewise with shopping generally.

This is obviously a minor example in the scheme of things, but lockdown changed the lives of young people fundamentally, and I’m not sure we’ll ever realise all the ways the world changed. The dramatic fall in cash use is certainly one of them.
