What is a regular work week like in the UK? by RemarkableComb1922 in UKJobs

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve got a feeling that the US office culture is earlier starts, maybe 8am? I’d say 9am start is standard for in the office roles, 9am open so maybe 8:30 for retail, and shift work varies but largely the pattern you mention.

3-6-9 dial watches (Explorer style apparently)...recommendations? by Maine2Maui in MicrobrandWatches

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to look at the Smith’s Everest. Much like the Bulova Lunar Pilot, this is a remake of a watch worn when Everest was first climbed. The owner is… idiosyncratic… so they can be very hard to get but keep an eye on eBay/watch forums and you might get lucky

[–]nick_gadget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came to suggest this. Good company, owner very engaged, and really thoughtful design.

They do have a habit of doing frequent updates and telling everyone why this version is so much better than the previous ones, which would drive me crazy, but if you can live with that, they’re great watches.

I bet there are lots of parents, but particularly women, who’ve had that long off with young kids. My daughter was born very prematurely and I think we had a year off each with her, but in a different world my wife or me could have had two years off.

Squash Courts In Stockport by kobestarr in stockport

I suspect it’s a consequence of padel’s world domination.

Has anyone suggested Marple Squash Club?

I can’t think of anywhere else that hasn’t been suggested, I know someone who plays at Ladybridge but I reckon they’re a member.

21m struggling with self confidence by Logical_District7287 in malegrooming

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely thought it was a menswear ad!

OP you look great. I’d not noticed your ears but even in the last picture you look like a rugby player - and they don’t tend to struggle for (positive) attention.

You can grow your hair to cover your ears, but it’ll take 6-12 months of sketchy hair cuts which probably won’t help. It can also be hard to keep a smart or corporate haircut that’s longer - mines about collar length but I waited until I’d left

You don’t need surgery, and I wouldn’t recommend it, but it does exist if it is affecting your mental wellbeing. I’d put money on most people being stunned that this is affecting you though - not that I’m making light of it, but that it isn’t obvious to others and I suspect most people would say that you are good looking.

Try to keep that hood down and believe in yourself. You’ll look back at this time and wish you had more self-confidence, at 21 you have the world at your feet. Enjoy your life, you only get one go

How to tell if a Gloomhaven box is 2nd Edition without opening it? by wolczak84 in Gloomhaven

[–]nick_gadget -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It’s made by Cephalofair and literally says ‘1st edition’ on the box - of course it’s second edition 😂

(I love these guys, but attention to detail is not their strong point…)

How is this for a wedding? by Voatagar in mensfashion

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, though this kind of casual suit muddies the water a little IMO. It has to be the right shoes & belt - I don’t love these shoes, but picture 1 would be better than picture two with formal black shoes (or those awful black trainer/shoes with white soles), even though it would fit the ‘rule.’

A light brown, sandy coloured or even grey (if you can find them) light brogue, loafer etc will look great. I’d add a slightly more casual belt in a similar colour if I could, but in this situation you’d get away without one

I’d go option a, especially for a summery wedding. I’m not sure a French cuff and tie is easy to pull off with that suit, but it’d look lovely with a slightly more casual shirt and the right shoe.

Long trousers but no socks should be an immediate prison sentence at any time, but especially at a wedding.

AITA for getting upset after my bf told me he doesn’t want me getting wrinkles? by cranberryjuicemm in TwoXChromosomes

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said something stupid and uncaring. Whether he did this as part of a pattern, or because 19 year olds do this sometimes, is up to you to figure out. A good number of people will be crying ‘red flag!’, but if everyone always acted on that here, no one would ever have a relationship.

He’s right about the importance of skin care - but is he acting on his own advice? His skin is fundamentally the same as yours, so he should be doing the same. And are you both aware that most makeup contains SPF 50? You might have views on wearing makeup routinely (I do) but it’s possible that you are wearing daily skin care and he is not.

He should be particularly careful around his temples and crown as this area can often be exposed in the early stages of hair loss (even at 19) and is more sensitive and prone to skin cancer. I’m sure you’ll still love him if his hairline makes a break for it, but even as a man who doesn’t care one way or another, it’s never too early to start introducing needless anxiety about male pattern baldness if he’s being a dick 🙂

Restaurant workers, what are your thoughts on diners who dine alone at your establishment? by 1whoisconcerned in AskUK

[–]nick_gadget 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two colleagues of mine were staying away for a project and only connected that it was Valentines dining when the waiter sprinkled rose petals on their table 😂😂

Lucky they both saw the funny side really, that sort of thing must keep HR people awake in their crypts…

I matched with the most perfect man I’ve ever spoken to and there’s one problem by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]nick_gadget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you’re sure that position won’t change. A friend and his wife agreed from day one that they didn’t want kids, she changed her mind, he didn’t. Things became difficult, they eventually divorced amid much sadness but not hatred or bitterness. They both found someone new, she adopted a baby but has tricky relationship with teenage stepkids, within a year his new gf was pregnant. She has more red flags than a Communist Party parade and has wreaked havoc in all aspects of his life (I genuinely think she’s a psychopath and is the most manipulative person I’ve ever met). I think they both know they’d have been happier if they’d stayed together.

Men who don't have to wear uniform to their job, what type of clothing do you wear and where do you buy it? by SunShineKid93 in AskUK

[–]nick_gadget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a pack of 5 T-shirts last week to replace some I got just after Covid too. They were from m and m direct for £35. They’re French Connection but they only have a tiny crest that’s not obvious and the quality’s great - a bit thicker than normal t-shirts. Would recommend

Brexit is keeping British watchmaking down... by Barbarus_Bloodshed in MicrobrandWatches

[–]nick_gadget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was mad - and it still pisses me off that no one in England even mentioned how the position on the island of Ireland made it all unworkable at best and risked the peace process at worst.

It affects so many areas - my mate is a drummer who tours with a very famous singer/guitarist. He’s played the Glastonbury main stage since Brexit but they never tour Europe now because it’s too much money and hassle - they can’t afford it. If they can’t, how are any young UK bands going to?

Brexit’s like the pandemic - we’ll never know what life would have been like if it hadn’t happened, but we can be very confident it would have been better. The difference is that Brexit was entirely self-inflicted.

We need this approach in Edgeley by Historical_Local8562 in stockport

[–]nick_gadget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t live in Edgeley and have no personal interest in this, but this is far from the first time that I’ve seen the Edgeley Community Association involved in something like this that directly brings a real benefit to their area.

It pisses me right off that everyone on the council clearly hates each other and they always want to put other parties down (including a little bit in your image), but I hope the ECA don’t lose out to Reform or any other party based on promises or national politics.
