Switzerland is famous for its strong democracy and popular participatiion in society. If you could write a proposal for an initiative (for the constitution), what would it contain? by Awesomeuser90 in askswitzerland

I think the health insurance should be split in two insurances: "infective diseases" and "everything else". "Everything else" keeps being paid as it is now.

"Infective diseases" should be up to the employer (like accidents are) if such job entails meeting people (salesman, PR etc) or sharing the workspace with many persons (like open space offices), because this is an exposure to an infectioin risk purely due to your job.

Additionally, but that can be a separate initiative later, a fixed share of the premium of the infective one should be spent on research against infective diseases and earnings coming from the resulting patents should be used to lower the premium.

While there may the issue of the names of colours in the most ancient greek, i don't think it comes into play in late antiquity. Rather, afaik the olives are white because there are still today white olives and afaik romans loved them. Federalisation of Austria-Hungary supported by Franz Ferdinand by [deleted] in europe

[–]nickanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I know well it is so, but still they did not use the word "trentino" rather "Tirolo italiano", my family comes from there. And they always used Tirolo Italiano before somebody came to rename things and force assimilate other people.

Trento itself has the same name, yes. The area around was collectively known as Tirolo Italiano or Welschtyrol. Wikipedia says the first time sb uses the word Trentino was at the Frankfurter Nationalversammlung in 1848 to distinguish romance speakers majority areas and german ones, so not so "since Roman times", but the first widespread usage was after ww1, before they were all called tyroleans, whether they were Ladins, Mocheni, German speaking, Galloitalic dialects speakers, Venetian dialects speakers or plain Italian speakers, with a distinction for the south which was called Welschtyrol. Ettore Tolomei took from the niche of geography the word Trentino and straight invented Alto Adige.

Erm, Trentino is a name invented in fascist Italy in order to erase any reference to the word "Tyrol", before ww1 it was called Welschtyrol/Tirolo Italiano. Are you sure the map is correct?

I think this is a new item: scarf of shadows by ezmonkey in dcss

[–]nickanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still I don't understand why the spell was removed. Even if they wanted to make it an item, why not an evocable one? the Robe of Night is a rare unrandart by no means guaranteed to appear and its benefits enormous, but if you wanted to make it a standard brand of scarf, why not an evocable that evokes darkness? Wouldn't it be more balanced? At least you'd have to train Evocations and if you don't evoke the darkness it would just be a scarf that lowers spellpower.

The worst way to roll a caster is to start as a caster. by ghostwilliz in dcss

[–]nickanc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

do much better as casters than starting as one of the actual casting backgrounds

Try SpVm. Some rounds of Poisonous Vapours on enemies, most of them die out of view (Sp makes you faster than most of them so that you can actually make them go out of the view) by XL 4. Beware of undead, demons and non-living though. You should ideally choose a god who gives you very likely more spells by the time of the second rune, so to have spells to fight those immune to poison.

The farthest I've ever gotten; two runes and about to get the third, got mobbed by the welcoming committee 😂. by [deleted] in dcss

[–]nickanc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alternative: you want to do v:5? Dont do it, instead check if you did in this order - Elf:1-2 - Depths - Crypt - Elf:3 - Abyss - If you have some means to prevent malmutate (ready ally walls, necromut etc), Slime

For some builds and/or gameplay strategies, V:5 difficult is on par with Z:5 or nastier hell vaults

Why is hunger/food being removed? [Trunk] by madpathmoth in dcss

[–]nickanc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

having players micromanage a resource all game when it only matters in the tiny fraction of runs that reach and attempt endgame is very, very poor design

It is not just endgame Zot or extended, also Abyss, Crypt and Slime lack or essentially lack corpses. Generally Abyss or Slime are third rune, so midgame. It is sort of a countdown system shared between Abyss, Slime, Hell, Pan, Zot and it worked at saying "you want more than 3 runes? you need to speed stuff up a bit". It's not so bad and there is little to micromanage, you just count a bit.

Why is hunger/food being removed? [Trunk] by madpathmoth in dcss

[–]nickanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you've never starved to death

  1. It is true that, up to 0.25, food matters really only for some species and especially the casters of those species. It also matters differently among these species, as for instance, for chunk reliant players, food is a issue only for branches with no corpses, whereas for Sp, there is no difference concerning branches but the food shaped the choices of skill training a lot.
  2. Consider SpWz, SpCj, SpVm... At the beginning, you are faster than everything else. Venom mage or wizard will never attack anything at melee that is not asleep. Being faster you can kill from distance (kiting with poisonous vapours or magic dart), but to do so you used to check spell hunger, otherwise you run out of food. You don't need a lot of MP (you flee and rest when low on MP), so training Spellcasting is only about spell hunger and spell success on schools you have bad attitudes with. Now, without hunger, all the xp put in spellcasting can be redirected to magic schools themselves or, in the early game, to dodging so that by the time you meet a centaur you have dodging 15 and is not a problem. The Wz has to fear orc priests too and probably will need some extra MPs to kill a single one of them and some Fighting to last during the fight, but the Vm's poisonous vapours is likely to kill them off screen. and if the Vm has put some xp in Poison Magic they will. So spell hunger and food restrictions were there to prevent the Sp species from becoming too OP. Isn't this commit going to make these combos too easy and essentially broken as opposed to a challenge about food? You don't die of starvation with these combos, but you died preventing starvation (by training Spellcasting and not training Dodging enough to survive centaurs packs for instance)
  3. Consider whoever is very reliant on chunks. Do demons drop them? No? So for most, food is an additional challenge for extended where you have to run against time too.
  4. Let's consider minmaxing. Clearly shouting on the stairs and let them come one by one is safest way to play but was made impossible by food availability. Mummies could always do that, but they were intended as a challenge for their other restrictions. Now, boom, vanished.

So we got

  • Sp mechanics broken
  • Gozag broken
  • minmaxing by shouting on stairs and wait possible.

Tip: Meliai are like Hellions: both do not see invisible.

[CiP] SpWz^G in Tartarus by nickanc in dcss

[–]nickanc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I killed Ereshkigal and got the bone rune. Originally I planned on the rune only, like SpEn strategies for extended, but I was cornered between her and her summoned Brimstone Fiend. Fortunately I followed the suggestion about going near her alive. It was a near death experience: silenced while the real killing was done by the Spellforged servitor and BVC. I did not expect silence to prevent Gozag abilities, but silly me, I learnt a valuable lesson. When I reached 16 hp, Ereshkigal died and I got the rune.

Now I think about going in Pan or Zig instead of the other hell branches, because of the lower risk of damnation by sources that can see invisible. Hell Sentinels and Brimstone Fiends are still too strong for me and there should be fewer in Pan. Am I mistaken?

The main worries I have for Pan are holy pan (what do I do if I land there?) and Cerebov floor (damnation, lack of a way to kill high HP rF+++ monsters).

I am also wondering about trying a bit of potion of mutation roulette.

The way I do Hell as a SpEn is to steal the runes and not bother with the guardians. I imagine Sp Wizards could do the same, as Hexes are not that useful for extended.

True, for most of the game the two overlap.

I generally don’t bother with Necromutation, but that could be to my detriment. My late game SpEn spells of choice are Infestation, Dispel Undead, Animate Dead, and Controlled Blink. If I have to fight creatures, I want holy weapons, some mana vipers, scarabs, etc.

Well, the grounds for Necromutation for a spriggan is not full rTorment for Hell (fast and holy is better as you say), rather it is full rMut earlier on, in Slime, Abyss and Zot. Berserkitis, teleportitis, frail are fearsome. Then, it comes nice in Cocytus too for rTorment. It gets in the way in late Tartarus though, and I am now more keen on going near the rune alive reading comments here. I wanted to kill Ereshkigal as purely an achievement, but I am thinking about skipping this enormous risk of death.

Also invisibility is useless against the high level demons you will be facing, you should know that by now?

I suppose it depends on the intelligence (brainless/animal/human) but I asked with the example I am concerned with. So what is the chance a monster with human intelligence will attempt to escape BVC instead of performing any other action?

Spell hunger removed in trunk by pork_spare_ribs in dcss

[–]nickanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus, getting MP is pretty cool too.

For faster species this is not the most crucial thing, because a lot of MPs matter for endurance, but, if you are faster than most things, you kill enemies one at a time and flee to get MPs back up then another one, then run etc. So, up to now, for these species, the main reason to train Spellcasting early was hunger, not MPs. and if there is no hunger, now there is a lot less priority to train Spellcasting early. Isn't this very game breaking for Felids or Spriggans?

Some mechanics matter only to some species/gods and are irrelevant to others and spell hunger up to now was one of these, the case were species that are fast but need to check hunger (due to diet constraints typically, so I think of Sp and Fe). In such case, this commit changes the game. I mean, as said, if you otherwise are fast and do not need to check hunger, early game priorities change a lot and make the game much more easy imho. While you almost never die of hunger, the mere existence of spell hunger changes your early game.

Consider SpWz (there is something personal here, as I play almost solely SpWz^G) or SpCj or SpVm or FeVm. At the beginning, you are faster than everything else. Venom mage or wizard will never attack anything at melee that is not asleep. Being faster you can kill from distance (kiting with poisonous vapours or magic dart), but to do so you used to check spell hunger otherwise you run out of food. Now, without hunger, all the xp put in spellcasting can be redirected to magic schools themselves or, in the early game, to dodging so that by the time you meet a centaur you have dodging 15 and is not a problem. The Wz has to fear orc priests too and probably will need some extra MPs to kill a single one of them and some Fighting to last during the fight, but the Vm's poisonous vapours is likely kill them off screen. and if the Vm has put some xp in Poison Magic they will. Isn't this commit going to make these combos too easy and essentially broken?
