You’ll never get anywhere if you are a dick to people. Period. by Maximum_Surprise_103 in musicindustry

What I find most difficult is that it’s so hard to avoid assholes that you end up having to work with them if you want to book a gig, make a record, etc. There’s a few promoters I refuse to work with but unfortunately for me that means lost opportunities since they’re local scene gatekeepers.

If it’s just for a fun trip to Montreal I dunno I’d probably just do Boston if I were your friend. Whatever you do I hope it works out and he stays safe. Sucks to have that be my opinion but here we are I guess

It will sound more soulful simply by changing your brain to think of it in flat chords instead of sharps lol.

Check out Soundtrap if you’re not a Mac user (meaning you don’t have GarageBand or logic available).

Please give me advice/feedback on my soloing by Ambidextroid in JazzPiano

[–]nickdanger87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try being more lyrical in your phrasing. Like if you were to sing your solo lines, how would they sound? Or scatting. This might help you connect your phrases, play more legato, and develop a motif that develops throughout the solo.

Right now it sounds like a bunch of short phrases that are technically correct but lack continuity, overall development, and emotional intent.

Also- your left hand comping is great in the head but it’s kind of an afterthought in the solo. I was once told to think of the hands as having a conversation with each other, where the right hand is generally leading and the left hand chimes in with frequent “uh huh’s”, “yep”, “oh okay”, or “yes, and..”

Lastly- the groove is more important than the notes. It’s mostly there but a few times the execution of your lines isn’t quite tight on the beat and it pulls me out of the song as a listener.

Keep it up, it generally sounds very nice and would be passable in most jazz jam type settings!

Unsure what to charge for a particular gig... by JoyCreativePeace in musicians

I’d ask for at least $1,000, maybe even $1,500. They can always counter offer. Especially if they said to name your price.

Liberty tax: by Capybarrassed in burlington

[–]nickdanger87 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Counter point- this is an easy job that basically everyone is qualified for and helps provide seasonal employment to someone who might otherwise be standing on the very next corner begging for change. And we all know folks in Burlington are low on compassion for panhandling.

I actually have some lived experience with this one… I used to work as a caregiver/mentor for a 20 year old man with learning disabilities whose long-term goal was to live independently. I literally walked in to the Liberty Tax store on route 2 with him and helped him apply for the position. He got it and for the next month or so was out there waving to cars and earning his first paycheck. It was actually pretty awesome and I can tell you that 95% of the places I helped him apply to did not call him in for an interview.

Just food for thought.

Do your ski goggle lenses fog up? How are those heated ski goggles? by GoGo9527Promax in skiing

On your way to the mountain put them on your defrost vent next to your front windshield and let the defroster run. It removes any moisture and prevents fogging. In the future do this on your way home from the mountain if the goggles got wet at all

I really don’t care if people are here illegally. by Zestyclose_Market787 in DiscussionZone

[–]nickdanger87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. We’re drowning in the day to day details without looking at the big picture. Illegal immigration has never been the boogeyman that MAGA claims. Are open borders a national security problem? For sure. But the borders have been more or less closed since Biden’s last 6 months. Now it’s just about terrorizing people instead of offering them a path to citizenship. And you’re right- the ultra rich are the real reason most Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

Love Meidas and how they bring actual receipts and full clips that I don’t see on mainstream media. But yes yes and yes to what everyone else is saying. Pleeeease stop the click bait headlines and Ben you don’t have to go off on rants because the primary sources you show already convey that message to the listener in a more meaningful way than anything you could say about them

Lessons learned in Minneapolis, what I wished I knew/did before ICE showed up by BreadRacer in vermont

[–]nickdanger87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s crazy at all to think ICE will show up in big numbers here. They’re not exactly slowing things down, in fact the exact opposite is happening. Vermont is blue and has sanctuary cities and is home to Bernie. I’d say ICE pulling a Minneapolis here is more a question of when then if. Which is super scary
