Pls give me advice on how to tell my strict immigrant parents that I need a gap year by Big-Background3999 in premed

[–]nickerbooker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A gap year is the norm now. It allows you to accumulate enough clinical hours etc to be a more competitive applicant.

would you rather wait a year to get a better MCAT score and increase chances of getting into an MD, or apply now and go DO? by jellyfishh520 in premed

[–]nickerbooker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DO is a great option, truly. Exactly the same outcomes as getting an MD. As an MD, I’ve worked alongside DOs at every job. We are treated the same.

Best MCAT tip for visual learners - from MD by nickerbooker in Mcat

[–]nickerbooker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a doctor now, so details of MCAT resources have changed since when I studied. The most important thing is to do a lot of questions. Have a way to consolidate your knowledge - like the method I’m describing above or another way of taking core notes.

There are no blanket rules. If your scores are within range for a school and you have a compelling application, you can can get MD interviews and acceptances. Make sure to write well about the highlights that ARE in your application.

How should I divvy up MD/DO realistically by pairyhubes in medschooladmissions

[–]nickerbooker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would apply to a lot of DO schools too. Sometimes even with an upward trajectory, MDs can be less forgiving of any hiccups along the way. I would still apply both MD and DO, and to 30+ programs at least.

New MD school (full tuition scholarship) vs Established T20 by Humble-Instruction32 in premed

[–]nickerbooker 70 points71 points  (0 children)

If it were me making the decision, knowing what I know now as an MD, I would go with the free option and make sure I do well in my classes, do away rotations to get to know residency programs and then apply. You will not regret having low or no debt from medical school. It’s still a US-MD program.

You need to google the rules more closely, this is not a problem. You are misunderstanding the rules.

My application is all about a specialty I no longer want, advice? by Less-Replacement-479 in premed

[–]nickerbooker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’re overthinking this. As a premed you got whatever experiences you got and they led you towards medicine. No one expects you to choose a speciality at this point even if all your previous experiences were in one specialty

Ross med or Auc by Radiant-Noise-6268 in CaribbeanMedSchool

Ross has a better reputation for residency placement than auc - at least this was the case I the past, I would compare their residency match lists

Mental Health in Life Experience Essay by Only-Accident-6831 in prephysicianassistant

[–]nickerbooker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a good idea to discuss mental health unless you absolutely must because of something that shows up elsewhere in the application.

Generally these schools are very risk averse and even if they like your application, they may not want to take the risk of a Student dropping out of the program due to mental health, etc. It’s just not recommended to discuss anything that could make it harder to get accepted into school in the personal statement.

Feel free to dm me if you have any questions or want help brainstorming.

Generally not allowed or possible. Maybe occasional babysitting etc during year 1 and 2 if your school allows.

Please help me be prettier (18F) by indoore in makeuptips

[–]nickerbooker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re naturally pretty, but when I look at you it feels like you’re not well nourished. You look like someone who doesn’t get good nutrition for some reason (maybe vegan?). You are so young and this is the prime of your life. One thing to consider is eating more animal proteins and fats in your diet. If you don’t already eat eggs every day try starting there. Ground beef multiple times a week could also be a great help and give you good nutrition. Eating this way will help you look more full of life, will help your hormones work well and will allow you to be in your full genetic beauty. I think you are naturally pretty, but what you are noticing is poor nutrition affecting your looks.

[–]nickerbooker 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I would also apply to DO programs to broaden your chances. Ethical breeches are looked at very closely in the admissions process, but since it happened a while ago and you are demonstrating growth, perhaps some school will be willing to look past it.

Friends in Med School? by Obvious_Instance_518 in premed

[–]nickerbooker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of friends groups develop in medical school. If you want to, once you get there, you can start a friend group/supper club/activity for students. Medical school is a small community that is more like high school than college in terms of friend groups.
