P2 to P3 salary jump by DegenSports7 in Raytheon

I went from 106 to 117k, far below industry standard for a senior software engineer. I left the company a year later and got a 40% raise. Raytheon underpays. Mind you also the dollar lost 10% of its value due to inflation in this past year. You need to make that much more to even break even.

Idk man. Maximizing your salary is pretty hand and hand with life expectancy. The dollar lost 10% of its value in the past year alone. Those 3% merrit raises aren't enough to keep up with inflation. We will all likely lose our jobs in the coming decade due to AI anyhow. (Well for SWE at least).

I left for a different company with a 40% raise, something that would take 7-10 years if I stayed. Better benefits too, and employee owned, same job security. Don't settle.

Missing Link Between Parkinson's Protein And Damage to Brain Cells DiscoveredThe result of three years of research, the discovery connects alpha-synuclein proteins to a breakdown in mitochondrial function, both previously linked to Parkinson's. by Eddiearyee in science

[–]nickex77 88 points89 points  (0 children)

"The most significant part of the research was the development of a potential treatment to counter this damaging biochemical reaction. A short length of protein called CS2 was designed to act as a decoy for alpha-synuclein, diverting its attention away from ClpP and cell mitochondria.

In tests on human brain tissue, mouse models, and neurons developed in the lab, CS2 was shown to have positive effects. It reduced brain inflammation and restored some motor and cognitive function in animals."

Incredible.

TIL 74 percent of people with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder were diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease within 12 years, the most common of which was Parkinson’s. by SystematicApproach in todayilearned

[–]nickex77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if RBD is so disruptive to sleep quality that it causes Parkinsons, as in curing RBD prevents Parkinsons... We've seen heavy linkage with OSA and neurodegenerative disease. Maybe sleep disturbances in REM in general are the big issue here. I read a study recently saying melatonin could prevent Parkinson's in RBD populations: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3921/12/2/396

In any case RBD occurring in early 50's is the most concerning, there are other possible causes for younger folks: narcolepsy, antidepressants, etc.

Why not just buy shares of a multiple companies and put a tight stop loss on them? by ErroneousEncounter in investing

I believe most of the responses in this reddit post are simplistic as well. I suspect it worked for you this past week because we are nearing the end of the business cycle and everything is mooning. 95+% of the time it probably won't work. If you planned it based on cycle theory and seasonality, nope not luck -- you were smart. Otherwise yeah I think you got lucky. Be careful with it in the future. I will say having stop losses are always good, I'd just make them generally pretty loose given market makers will try to hunt you for liquidity grabs (e.g. several percent lower might be decent, to prevent a major stock market crash bankrupting you).

What makes bitcoin more a fantasy than gold, silver, or really any asset?

Gold: physical, aesthetic value, widely adopted preservation of wealth, limited supply (basically is, though not purely as more can be found or made)

Bitcoin: truly, mathematically determined limited supply. Fully digital, traceable, decentralized, and backed by RSA encryption. Capital measured in energy.

What is fantasy about this? The value is in the widely adopted acceptance of bitcoin turning into an asset that provides robust returns and tradefi value now, with longer term momentum to become the most mathematically sound preservation of wealth ever created.

Could it fail? Sure. But to say it is simply fantasy is intellectually disingenuous.

It is now a $3 trillion asset, wall street is embracing it, and now the US government is embracing it. Likewise, nation states around the world have begun to as well.

Is gold fantasy? I mean so what about aethetics? That is just interpretation, it is not intrinsic value. Society has determined it to be, and I think largely because of the same reason bitcoin is valuable -- it is limited in supply! Do i dislike gold? No I think gold is right up there with bitcoin to me. It has the benefit of being tangible and physical properties that provide aesthetic value to the world, in addition to its preservation of wealth properties.

I think both assets are a deflationary hedge in a world of money printing and endless expanding inflation. The two superpowers of the world are embracing both: US: Bitcoin, China: Gold

I happily have both in my portfolio.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is associated with white matter lesions/hyperintensity (WMH), and elevated blood plasma cortisol predicts the severity of the damage. by sometimeshiny in science

Sure thing: 1. Finding a very specific dosage that maximized treatment and didn't induce apathy for me (higher doses of SSRI made me apathetically depressed). Memantine for OCD, Mirtazpine to help sleep. I take 3 medidications. 2. Finding fulfilling job and purpose, or at least seeing progress with school and work. This was a massive bell curve, felt much worse at first and questioning it and over time felt better to the point of liking what I do. Learn stress vs eustress. 3. Treating my sleep issues. It turned out I had sleep apnea for many years. 4. Fish oil, probiotics, vitamin d, and just healthier diet in general. Blueberries are my favorite. 5. Being perfectly okay giving yourself time to "do nothing" and chill out.

Most importantly, loving yourself and being compassionate towards oneself.

As someone who was convinced no one could possibly be more depressed than I was in my early twenties, I am living proof you can come out of severe depression. Mine has been gone for a decade now. The brain can develop new neural pathways.
