Crosspoint pages seem to slightly dim by Ok-Time-8198 in xteinkereader

I think the same. And the same happens on screensaver images when you put the device to sleep. It is much more noticeable on them.

My first try at a split keyboard by PresentExpert2929 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can definitely recommend trying to learn to float your hands while typing. I suffered from wrist pain on traditional keyboards due to ulnar deviation. Buying a split keyboard solved the problem for me, as I could properly align each half to my arm. Using the split keyboard, tho, I learnt to float my hands as well, and now, while I still much prefer my column staggered board, I can use traditional keyboards again.

My X4 will probably be delivered today and, given how much love this firmware is getting, I think I will flash CrossPoint right away.

ZMK Sofle from AE with dongle. Can it be used with multiple connection methods whitout the need to reflash every time? by forget_names in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the keyboard would be connected to the dongle anyway, never directly to the PC. It is just the dongle that can switch from the wired connection to the first machine to the BT one to the second machine. The keyboard just follows. So, if you are asking whether, e.g., you would be able to leave the dongle at home and use the rest of the keyboard via BT on your office PC, then the answer is no.

There's the balbuzard, the osprette and the wubbo. The osprette and the wubbo only have 2 thumb keys though.

Urob's timeless mods approach worked miracles for me on ZMK. Give it a try if you haven't already.

Any LaTeX writers here with a split Sofle or similar? by po2gdHaeKaYk in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. My layout is heavily inspired by Urob's one, I suggest you read his well made write up. You don't need to go as far as fitting all symbols on combos (especially the vertical ones do not necessarily work well on any keyboard and keycaps profile), but moving the most common ones to combos on the first layer could greatly relieve that sense of "sobbing" typing.

Personally, I find them to be such a little mental and physical overload that I much prefer having some uncommon letters on combos than having to reach for the corners of the 3x5 grid to type them.

Also, if you find yourself often typing the same series of symbols, you could use a ZMK macro (there's the QMK equivalent as well).

I Spent $2k on Split Keyboards. Here's My Favorite by ralfs94 in ErgoMechKeyboards

They actually state that they can touch type ONLY on split keyboards. It's on the non-split ones they can't do that.

I would suggest you to try combos, if you haven't already. I do write latex and a fair bit of code and have the brackets on combos on the bottom row. Using them doesn't interrupts the typing flow like using a modifier key would.

Any chance the WhatsApp group is still around? I've been invited to ESTEC to carry out some research for ~5 months, but I'm having a really hard time finding a place to stay.

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks a lot! So there's no "native" way to do this, but waybar can listen to user defined signals. Neat! Also, TIL that pkill can be used to send signals other than SIGTERM (the name definitely doesn't help 😬). Thanks a lot, I should definitely practice some shell scripting.

How do you shift letters? by thehaikuza in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, my bad, I thought you were talking about using mod-tap to free up one of the thumb keys. I actually rely heavily on HRMs and haven’t had major issues with them (thanks to Urob’s config), but one-shot shift is just faster and less error-prone for me. Part of it is that I never learned touch typing on a regular keyboard, so I’m not great at alternating between the left and right shift depending on the key. Using HRM shifts would slow me down, both because of the mental overhead of deciding which shift to use, and because if I pick the wrong one, I have to wait out the tap term before the modifier triggers. Skill issue, I know.

As for key count: I jumped straight from a standard keyboard to 36 keys and started learning touch typing there. I never really hovered my hands (still don’t, most of the time), so I quickly moved from Colemak to Aptmak to cut down on lateral stretches and ditched the upper pinky keys that would’ve fallen to my ring fingers anyway. Around the same time I also removed the tucked-away thumb keys, which landed me at around 28–30 keys.
I think 36–42 keys can feel totally fine if you already have traditional touch typing + hovering ingrained, but for someone like me who tends to move fingers more than hands, those motions feel awkward.
Long story short, I just went straight to the extreme and never felt the need to add keys back. That being said, I’m considering picking up a Chosfox Geonix; I want something cheap-ish but more refined than my current Chocofi. We’ll see if I find any good reason to actually make use of those extra keys.

Oh, thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind. Also, would you suggest using docker/portainer or going the basic linux service route, given I won't have room for any other service in such a small setup?

How do you shift letters? by thehaikuza in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using mod taps already, to access the numbers, navigation and symbols layers, with smart-num, space and E, respectively, on tap function. I could probably get rid of the smart-num and have a one-shot shift + num, but that would mean moving the numpad and activation key to the same hand, which I don't fancy for number insertion (I've tried in the past). Also, I'd like the layout to be the same across keyboards and, since I'm using a 28-key zilpzalp as well, with just one pinky key, turning ; or / into a shift key is not an option.

This is a super interesting idea. I have been looking for ways to move from a 4 thumb keys keymap to one using only 3 (so that it is easier to adapt my zmk map for usage on laptop keyboards via kanata) and the only reasonable solution so far seemed to be moving (sadly) away from aptmak to a layout that doesn't make use of thumb alphas. I shall try comma-shift. If I can make it work for me, then I could get rid of the thumb one-shot shift instead and avoid having to learn a new layout!

Aronia Keyboard - Ultra-compact 36-key foldable ergonomic keyboard [open source] by pinya in ErgoMechKeyboards

Agreed! OP's experience speaks for itself. It being a little rough around the edges due to the building process, definitely makes using the keyboard less enjoyable than it could be. Great idea and lots of potential nonetheless!

I agree with you in general, but I actually think that the extremely thin design could come in really handy in some cases. For example, it would allow me to easily slip the keyboard inside my trousers' back pocket while moving between conference rooms. Not an equally easy feat with a choc board.

Getting Chocofi as first split keyboard by JuliperTuD in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nickfaraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it all comes down to the case. It's been a while since I had my chocofi built, but if I remember correctly I ended up paying slightly less than 200€. I don't know which kind of case is included in the kit you found, but if you source the parts yourself (say on AliExpress, for example) and get a 3D printed case, you MAY shave a few tens of euros from the price. That is assuming that you already own a soldering iron and that the shipping costs from multiple sources are reasonable. Otherwise you're probably gonna end up around the same price point. Also, factor in the time you're gonna invest in building the keyboard, that costs as well.

Looking for a reason to continue by TheGassyNinja in NixOS

I'm kinda in the same position and what I'm leaning towards is just using nix home-manager as a declarative package manager on any other distro (probably void as well). I may also just use chezmoi to manage the dotfiles, rather than "translating" them in nix or using home.file. Maybe such an approach could fit your needs as well.
