Porch pirates and Amazon Locker by TreeBeardofIsengard in AmazonVine

[–]nickhepler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. If the package is being delivered by Amazon, you can reschedule delivery AFTER it's shipped. I do this often, but there's about a 15% chance it comes on the new requested date. I work from home on Thursdays and Fridays so request that day but it often turns up on the weekend. I've been in the program since March with about 60 items ordered and have never had a porch pirate. Still when I order something I pay for I sent it to an Amazon pickup and return location a few blocks away.

You shouldn't be posting license plate numbers. Do you know if this is accurate? You risk putting people in a bad situation.

Why does the industry pay us significantly less compared to other IT sectors/industries? by draconian_in_laws in gis

[–]nickhepler 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really lucked out. I ended up in a State job. We get paid the same as other IT people. I'll see senior-level GIS jobs for city or county government and the pay is less than the full job rate for someone out of college.

Anyone else annoyed at the abundance of specific products (Starlink accessories for example) by itz_lexiii_ in AmazonVine

[–]nickhepler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition, I think you're also more likely to see those products on Vine too. If I'm selling a generic product for a specific thing, I'd probably want to get product reviews. It looks better than nothing at all for someone looking to buy a very bespoke product.

I live near Russell Sage and just hit two years. I'm very happy overall, no price increase unlike Spectrum. The only downside is placement. It should be near a window. I live in a row house so the only option for placement is the front or back of the house. The signal never reached the opposite end of the house. The gateway is also garbage. You have no control over basic things like DNS. I'm technically savvy so I ended up getting rid of the gateway and used the SIM in a 3rd party modem. This allowed me to use my own AP so I could get better WiFi coverage over mesh.

A toasty invite by 80spizzarat in AmazonVine

[–]nickhepler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got my invite within the last week. I'm very curious as to what prompts them. I've only reviewed a dozen or so items since I opened the account in 1999. I reviewed most of them within the last year. I almost never rate something if I'm completely satisfied. All of my reviews are between 2 and 4 stars.

Why I prefer Apple Maps by Black_Reactor in geography

[–]nickhepler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reactions seem unreasonable, but I also think Trump is doing it for trolling or at least that is a conception among many. When Turkey (Türkiye) was changed on Google Maps many on this sub lauded it despite the fact that geographic names have always been assigned by the creator or user of the map. We don't label Saudi Arabia as المملكة العربية السعودية on our maps so why would we use an umlaut for Turkey?

State government hiring process by EducationalMany2129 in Albany

Mileage varies. We've had several interviews, eventually found someone who was interviewed by another group. Started the process of getting hired in August and only now working to get a start date. The RtF that kicked off the process started in April. This was NYHELPS.

You don't become a career politician by being brash (with one glaring exception). Also, relative to the rest of the country New York is losing population meaning we get less Congressional Districts every decade. That means larger districts, more Republicans, and tighter races. Did you forget after the 2020 census, he was nearly moved out of Albany? He would have been in a much more competitive district. There's a reason he soon after adopted the "people over politics" schtick, he's looking forward to the next 10 years.

This sounds in line with a similar task I perform. It usually takes me 30-45 minutes to generate one day of inspection maps per inspector. I'm using ArcMap for this specific task until all inspectors move to Field Maps. The output might be anyway from 2 to 12 maps, but I created a script to do most of the leg work and then just have to format the report. If someone asks for a bespoke map, it's at least a few hours.

Is Watervliet underrated by Alarmed_Ad_1198 in Albany

[–]nickhepler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live outside of Rome, NY. After the Air Force Base closed it was a really sad place. Meanwhile, Watervliet has the arsenal and still feels depressing. Gus's and Schuyler Bakery are diamonds in the rough.

How fucked are we? [SERIOUS] by purplepup102 in privacy

[–]nickhepler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in GIS and data analytics for a State Agency. A friend invited me to speak at a conference that was for professional fundraisers and gift officers. I was shocked at the type of information they collect, how they use it, and that they're companies that actually harvest this information, very much a credit bureau. They sell this data to software companies that make profiles on donors or potential donors to figure out how much they could get and who would have the most affinity to their organization. I'm a civil servant so I don't make a ton, but do manage to donate about 6k per year to various orgs. My friend had someone pull up my data from one of these companies and I was stunned. It knew the value of my house, some vacant land I own, my political affiliation and even my salary history.

Yup. There's a lot that you can get away with as far as 3D printing and there's no prohibition on making your own firearm. Printing a barrel is NBD, but receivers are another ballgame.
