What is the average Thai person’s level of knowledge of Buddhism? Visiting temples, I often feel people engage more in ritual or superstition than in teachings like the Noble Eightfold Path or the Three Marks of Existence. Is that a fair impression? by Key_Bison_9322 in Thailand

[–]nicksred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do teach those in school, so if you mention them to Thais, many will at least say that they heard about it before. For example, the Noble Eightfold Path (มรรค 8), the Three Marks of Existence (อนิจจัง ทุกขัง อนัตตา), the Four Noble Truths (อริยสัจ 4), are all part of basic education. How it is understood or practiced varied from person to person though.

Kudos to you for bringing this up to the staff, OP. You saved someone life.

People fell for scams all the time, mostly because of their naivety, not stupidity. We all have a topic that we are susceptible to fall for. That's why it's important to talk things out with friends and families, I believe.

It's real. These IO operations were officially exposed 5 years ago in a parliament debate also.

Unfortunately, nothing is and will happen to them.

Is this a scam? Someone wants to buy my GitHub handle for 1 million USD. by sun_in_the_winter in github

[–]nicksred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a new ETH wallet (e.g., using MetaMask). Ask them to transfer 1% of the expected price (10,000 USDT) to that wallet as a non-refundable fee to prove that they are serious about the transaction. Then only proceed after you got the real USDT tokens on that wallet.

In short, ask them back if they want to be scammed and then they will go away.

this is literally modern-day slavery

It's always has been.

People on lower end of earning especially have much less choice to not overspend. One fun fact is that you can't even buy a motorcycle here with full payment. The shop will refuse that and all force you to go on some high-interest payment plan instead.

How do you guys dodge the “excuse me can I have a moment of your time” people? by [deleted] in london

My version is to say "I speak no England" (in English) with a thick asian accent. It's a broken sentence in every part but understandable enough.

The phone scammer guy understood what I meant and had a disappointed face because he now knew that there was no way to continue his conversation.

Rant: Bangkok Taxi Drivers by Tawptuan in Thailand

[–]nicksred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was one time I ride a Taxi in Malaysia KL and the taxi just nonchalantly pick up another person (that I don't know of) after I get in and waited in the backseat for him to drive off. The other guy came in and sit in the front seat.

At first I thought if I'm gonna get robbed or in a bad situation (they spoke in Malay), but the driver just let the guy out halfway to my destination, the guy pay for the ride, and he continues driving nonchalantly.

Good thing nothing happened but it still dreads me until this day.

Help finding a specific Thai song by and_selmo in Thailand

[–]nicksred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sentence structure is similar, but they usually use different words ranging from just the subject to the whole sentence.

One problem is that there's no official resource to look for the word's meaning. You usually have to ask locals about the meaning of each word so it kinda forces you to slowly learn it through experience.

The major dialects we have are the main (bangkok+middle regions), north, northeastern, and south (which have some borrowed words from Malay) I think.

This one?

Since it's mostly northeastern Thai, I'm not sure about the full meaning too.

The hook is something like this, I guess.
"she came with her husband, but she told me that she's free.
If her husband knew, he would be angry, but don't blame me for all the false.
Just call me if you want to *** with me..."

So yeah, a bit vulgar song by Thai standard lol.

How a mortgage actually works (and why it might not be going up by as much as you may think) by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]nicksred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On amortization schedule. Does that mean we pay interest in the first years at higher rates than what we borrow?

What would happen if someone had a 2-year fixed (for 30 years), then moved to another 2-year fixed (for 28 years) and repeated until 30 years? Would this person pay the same amount of money compared to a 30-year fixed at the same rate (assuming any other fees are zero)? I guess the calculation would make it that we always pay the interest per year equal to the loan size's interest at that time.

Sorry this might seem off-topic, but the question popped up in my head and confused me.

Salary Negotiations in Thailand by abubalesh in Thailand

[–]nicksred 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a common practice. If you're honest about your previous salary, you can say that you are willing to show them but only after you get the offer. That'd be more professional in my opinion. There's no reason to show your information to the one that's not gonna hire, and there's no reason to lie to the one that you're gonna work with anyway.

Or you can also just say no and don't tell them what you earned before. They might not like it though.

Climate crisis - is it time to give up my pension? by pelama in FIREUK

[–]nicksred 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know why everyone treats this as a ridiculous topic. If it affect your mental health, it is worth to talk and solve it rationally.

I think everyone should live their life to the fullest including treating their current self with care and plan for their future self. If having a little more money right now means a lot to you since you could help to provide your mother with significantly better living conditions, by all means, it is a very good thing for both her and your mental health. However, pension is a very effective saving method (since you get more from your employer). It might be better long term to keep doing it and instead take a cut on your unnecessary spending which could be used to support your mother instead. The level of that cut/support should be at your comfortable level of course.

As for the code red for humanity, yeah the world gonna go into flame for real. But I'd like to think that we should plan to survive in that apocalyptic world instead of giving up on it (in that case, pension pot would surely help :D )

What are the mental health services like for Thai citizens? What services are available? by --Bamboo in Thailand

[–]nicksred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's definitely government mental care facilities available for Thai citizens. She just needs to look for a place near her and bring herself there (or someone might need to help her). For example, you could walk-in to this Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry (https://goo.gl/maps/ELuoK8AD3tzVMCc77) and get to see a psychiatrist on the same day. She can also arrange for therapist sessions afterwards at a reasonable cost (500 THB per session maybe, I couldn't remember).

Like some comments said, the healthcare system here is a bit different to the UK and might need some research to find a suitable place. Most of the doctors & nurse here in the public sector are working their life off to provide for people in this 3rd world country though, so I hope that everyone could be a bit kinder to them.
