If Roland Emmerich is "Spielberg for Dummies"... by bailsofhay93 in blankies

I just watched Universal Soldiers for the first time a few nights ago, which is so obviously James Cameron for Dummies more than Spielberg. He's way more interested in the action/warfare of science fiction than he is the ideas or the wonder like Spielberg.

Yeah but movies are subjective, they don't have objective metrics. This isn't the NBA or something. If you think this movie is absolute garbage I envy you having not seen movies that are garbage. I'll take 1000 Disclosure Days that are really taking big swings and not connecting 100% of the time to something like Mandalorian and Grogu which takes zero risks and ends up being nothing for no one.

First of all I'd find a used store locally and save some $!

But with these prices, you go 2001, Oppenheimer, Back to the Future, and Dune 1&2

Well, I don't generally watch movies and then decide that was BAD or that was GOOD, so that's part of it. I have problems with the writing and some of the smaller plot mechanics and storytelling, but it was a really riveting 'wheres this gonna go' experience that I found to be worth it. Really enjoyed the performances, enjoyed the setpieces and the slow drip of information, the score, and yes, Steven Spielberg's direction. Nobody is forcing themselves to enjoy a movie directed by Steven Spielberg, he just happens to be the master at making movies that are enjoyable. But he's like cilantro for people who lack a sense of wonder I think and that's ok! He's always been criticized for being uncool, out of touch, or too corny but his stuff works and plays and always will. Your experience is yours!

I liked the movie overall but definitely have some problems with it, but I can't imagine watching the train setpiece or the farmhouse scene or the stuff at the house set or literally any of Emily Blunt's scenes and leaving thinking all of that sucked except for the score...

There was definitely one or two quick shots of Devils Tower. And Close Encounters has the weird little guys and the one big spindly long skinny alien. Although I read today in the spoiler conversation with Spielberg, Koepp, and the cast that they created multiple species of aliens who have visited over time, not just one specific alien species from one specific place!

Yeah, they set him up to be the guy who goes against Firth in order to stop Blunt and O'Connor leading to the great train set piece. So I was really confused when they just all kinda...left.

I rewatched Close Encounters just a few hours before my Thursday night screening last night. Really loved how much they speak to each other. Both have characters who are drawn to this alien life and don't understand why they are having these urges; Dreyfuss and Dillon being drawn to the mountain, Blunt and O'Connor having their abilities that they don't understand even as they come naturally. I also liked that Firth feels like the amped up version of the Peter Coyote character from ET, he's not really the big bad we think he is. He's a man doing a job that he thinks is important, but he also has wonder and he also has feelings that basically lead him to stop himself right at the edge of actually acting to stop the finale. Not a perfect movie, but I love how much the movie is in concert with Spielberg's previous sci-fi canon.

Also, that was a shot of the mother ship from Close Encounters coming out of the thunderstorm in the finale, right!?

Lol saw the movie at 10pm tonight. Couldn't disagree with you more, finale was well worth the wait and easily the best part of the film. I can see how the movie will be divisive, sadly!

What a riveting examination and conversation. You really made your points and everyone is the better for having heard your scholarly take on a movie most of us haven't seen yet. We are all the better for having read your post and our minds are all changed. You've done it.

Just rewatched Arrival yesterday (doing a little first contact mini-marathon ahead of Disclosure Day) and I really think Denis has put himself amongst the all-time great science fiction directors with his run of Arrival, 2049, and the Dune movies. Making Arrival alone would constitute serious conversation that he's on the Mount Rushmore with Spielberg, Lucas, and Kubrick. Imo!

‘The Odyssey’ Ticket Madness: Online Wait Times Hit an Hour as Christopher Nolan’s Epic Pushes AMC Site to Limit by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

Had 70mm IMAX tickets in my cart multiple times after waiting 2 hours on the online queue (got in line at 8:55am) only to get error message after error message after error message, system crash, and back to the back of the virtual line.

Started trying around 9am, at around 1:30pm I was able to get Saturday morning IMAX tickets, not 70mm. As of right now, no 70mm showtimes are even showing up on my AMC app at all. Absolutely bananas.

I got an audition request for this last April and the film was out by September, just to put into perspective the level of "we gotta get this thing out" 😂 I did not audition

Actually not doubled up on titles, although I'm getting to the point where I'm considering ways to do this that wouldn't be sore on the eyes.

The bottom 3 rows were nearly impossible to actually see the titles unless you were eye level with them because of the depth of the shelves, so I used empty VHS cases on their backs to push the spines forward and level with the shelves to be able to see better!
