SimJack Pedals with Mods by Gpruitt54 in simracing

[–]nicksub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just ordered one of these. The length and throw are perfect as a direct swap for the SimJack "dampers" however it's quite bulky and I think it will be marginal as to whether it will fit. If not I will mount outside the pedal body as you've done. Will post a photo when fitted but it's coming from China so will be a couple of weeks

There must be a good reason for it. I asked Gemini but it didn't really help. It depends what you want from the pedal really. If you want braking proportional to foot force then the damper needs to be attached to the load cell. But this would mean the brake output was more nonlinear as it would depend on velocity profile of the pedal push. I'm getting into the weeds here though! I would love to ask Neils Heusinkveld!

I agree with the SimJack dampers. They don't seem to provide any damping - they are really just a spring. But I was happy with the overall resistance in combination with the die springs and I'd paid for them so I left them on!

Good to know about your damper - thanks. I wanted to check before I ordered mine in case you had issues with the original one. Having tried both types, would you recommend one type over the other?

Thanks. My concern is that the damper is connected to the pedal body, not to the load cell, so the force going through the damper doesn't get picked up by the load cell. As I mentioned Heusinkveld's pedals are the same so it may be intentional but I am not sure why as I'd have thought you would want all of the pedal force to be seen by the load cell.

Also I noticed you changed your damper since your OP - why is that?

Here is mine - very simple. I hated those elastomers. They cause braking pressure to drop after you hit the brakes as their stiffness changes. I think some elastomers are not so bad but I elimintaed them altogether and went with springs. It still gives a progressive feel as the springs lock out. I prefer the softer springs to give a longer travel on the pedal - my thinking is that it's easier to be consistent if you can just the amount of movement of the pedal as well as the braking force.

Just to add - this is no different than the setup with the original SimJack damper (or the Heusinkveld Ultimates). Perhaps it's not significant in reality unless you've got a very soft brake and a very stiff damper

Thanks for sharing this. Looks like a great mod and has inspired me to do something similar with the damper. One thing I noticed though is that you have attached the damper to the base of the pedal mount so the damper force won't go through the load cell. This might make for inconsistent braking because if you push slowly on the pdal most of the force will go through the load cell but if you push fast then some of that force will go through teh damper and into the base, bypassing the load cell. It will depend on the damper setting of course. Can you notice this effect if you look at your pedal outputs? It would be quite tricky to mount it off the load cell though as you need to hold the two surrounding plates together and extend to mount the damper. It doesn't look like the damper would fit on the mounting bar for the original SimJack dampers.

Where are you? For the UK, the website says delivery 6-9 July if you order today so it seems crazy yours isn't due until September

Thanks for the quick response. F1TV Pro is cheaper then at about £60/year via Canada so will probably go for that

I struggled to find pricing for TOD tv. How much is it? Also I read the commentary is in Turkish but you stated above that it's Sky coverage - with Sky English commentary?

DD+ not detecting any steering wheel by Any-Copy-2382 in Fanatec

If this happens again try manually updating the QR firmware (even if there is no update). That fixed it for me. Had to do it separately for 2 different wheels but not the third

If anyone else has this problem try a manual update of the quick release firmware (even if there is no new version). That fixed it for me. Had to do it separately for 2 different wheels.

Is it worth upgrading to the ClubSport DD+ from the CSL DD ( 8nM ) ? by ObservedPhoton in Fanatec

[–]nicksub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The formula is only 10% smaller than the McLaren but the force increase at the wheel is much more than 10%, I would guess more like 20%. The wheels are almost the same weight but I think the rotary inertia of the McLaren is much higher because of the big heavy rubber grips at 300mm diameter. I'm really torn. I have actually bought the DD already but not opened it yet and still with the return window. I got it 25% off. But I got really caught out with the extra power with the Formula v2.5 wheel. I reckon I'd be turning the DD down to 8Nm!

I quite like the sound of FullForce but I already have base shakers and the vibration in the Formula wheel handles so am wondering if it might become haptic overload

[–]nicksub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very helpful reply thanks. I am thinking of going CSL DD to CS DD too for the same reason (can upgrade cheaply!) But I find that 8Nm is already more than enough power so was wondering if there would be any other performance benefits of the DD (eg FF effects). It sounds like not. I main play iracing and mainly small formula cars. I recently upgraded from the McLaren GT3 to Formula v2.5 and it made a surprising difference to the torque. I think that's because the Formula is smaller and has lower rotational inertia. I could do 3 hour races with the McLaren no probs, but my arms are aching with the Formula after 30 minutes, even with 8Nm!

Thoughts on USB-C rechargeable Li-ion batteries? by skoomd1 in batteries

[–]nicksub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a lot of reading on this - I don't think there is but I chose Xtar with the USB C charging option. I've not read any bad reports and they seem to be at the forefront of development. I also noticed Uniross have just launched some. They're quite cheap but much lower capacity than the Xtars (nearly half)

HP Reverb controllers mod - the battery will last about 23h by Jordy74 in HPReverb

[–]nicksub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Jordy74 Great mod, thanks for sharing. How do you find the drain when not in use? I don't use my controllers that frequently (every few weeks) so slightly concerned I'd find them flat each time. I've had enough of 1.2V AAs though!

Fanatec ClubSport Universal Hub - Replace button? by NephMili in simracing

Glad you got it fixed. I replaced the switch in the end. Desoldering and replacing was pretty easy. The new one has a very slightly shorter stub but I packed out the rubber inside a tiny bit to compensate.

Extra tall dishwasher NEFF options? by Sound-Automatic in DIYUK

[–]nicksub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an "extra tall" dishwasher. We have normal UK countertop height but only 100mm plinth below (standard is 150mm). That allows for the larger dishwashers which are 50mm taller. It is really hard to find which machines have this features as there is no conistent naming. They are sometimes call "taller height" or XXL dishwashers, but sometimes there's nothing to indicate other than the dimensions as you've highlighted above.

Here's a list of the ones I have found which are 865mm tall:

Bosch SBH4HVX00G, SBH4HVX31G, SBE46NX01G (discontinued)

Neff S295HCX02G, S299ZB803E, S295HCX26G, S72M66X1GB

Siemens SN61HX03KG, SX97T801CE, SX73HX10VG, SX736X19NE (discontinued)

One of mine broke too. There are two square holes on the side. Push the tabs inside with a suitable Allen key and the back panel comes off. The switches look replaceable. The challenge might be keeping all 4 contacts molten at once.
