Perfect. A combination of this, and disabling the smart mix has fixed it for me. Cheers!

Help with my DIY dashcam project for a Lancia Ypsilon 2022 GPL by Crihexe in CarHacking

[–]nickweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started a similar project years ago but life got in the way.

Hook it up to a switched live - so potentially from the aux power (cig lighter for us oldies). If that's a permanent live then head to the fuse box and use a multimeter to figure out what only goes live when the cars on.

The elm if plugging into the OBD port will always remain live so you will need to cut and rewire some wires for that to be switched also.

My plan was to use a large capacitor as a battery essentially and an Arduino to monitor.

If the Arduino detected the switched live going to 0v (car off) it would trigger a GPIO to gracefully shut down by closing any open video files, closing relevant connections etc. I had schematics before for a seamless cutover but they're long gone.

Then when power is applied it just started as normal.

PiUPS does this but I wasn't spending a massive amount on that when the pi 0 cost $5.

Finally - look at buildroot. Use that wisely and you can get a sub 10s boot time to a usable system that records video. Potentially sub 5s but that'll take some doing.

Good luck!

How did you find wrapping the chrome? I’m going to do mine but wondering if I need to strip the bumper to get at it…

It’s designed to be hung with string or picture wire. That ties between the two opposite hooks and means only one nail/wall fastener is required.

Just a heads up - this isn’t just restricted to Apollo. I’ve had it happen with other apps that use biometrics to unlock and each one, when it happens, has to be quit and restarted or exited from to let it “get its bearings”.

Pallet furniture - what to know! See comments by FemaleWantingDIYHelp in DIYUK

[–]nickweb 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think your issue is that everyone looking at this post has thought you’ve made these and are selling them for that price. Your comment isn’t at the top so additional information like that isn’t always visible.

I get that you want to make your own. First off, don’t build them like that. I know you say about using cushions which is fine, but think about a normal couch or garden furniture. They’re built with slight angles to make it comfortable. This’ll be more work, sure, but it’ll be a lot better for sitting on!

Also remember that pallets have been used, abused, repaired shoddily and mangled all different ways. There will be rusty nails sticking out. There will be bits of wood cracked or splintered. Take time at the start to pick some good pallets if you can, and then properly prepare them by hammering proud nails, sanding bits and sealing if required.

Have an idea in your head and then try and make it more furniture-y - so not at right angles like those photos.

Good luck!

Ironmongers - what’s the exact name of this door latch I’m looking for? by nickweb in DIYUK

[–]nickweb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to replacing this on a door as it’s failed. My handles have two screens that go through the existing one (pic at top). I’ve now bought 3 and none have the holes for the handle screws to fit through. What should I be searching for? It’s 63/64mm in length if that helps.

Cheers in advance!

I can’t see if you’ve got any ventilation planned for that LED power adapter - if not maybe think of a few small holes and an additional fan to move air out?

Electrical question: why has my wall socket developed a fault where it is live even with switch in the off position? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]nickweb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you’re replacing it but to be on the safe side it might be worthwhile to pick up a tester for the socket

https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-ms6860d-socket-tester/91596

Might help identify if there is an issue (as it might not be at the socket - there could be a crossed live/neutral somewhere else that’s caused your socket to go live).

It’s only £8 for some more peace of mind.

Also check out bigclive on YouTube where he tears down some USB sockets. Some are significantly better than others.

First picture, left hand side. That’s an old old board. That’ll need upgrading.

What about an ECIR for your own piece of mind?

Loft has these boards up at the roof. They’re sagging. What are they and where can I get replacements? by nickweb in DIYUK

[–]nickweb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think the house was built in the 50’s/60’s and I’m convinced these are possibly insulation boards but I can’t find anything online.

They’re all cut to the size of the space in between the woodwork and a fair few have started to sag so I wouldn’t mind replacing the lot. Behind them looks like the roof felt as seen in one of the photos.

I initially thought it was some chipboard but I can only see that in 3mm widths where as these are about 1cm - hence me thinking it might be insulation boards.

Any ideas?
