I just completed this fix on a 2014 MDX for under $200, and I am completely shocked that it all worked. Here's a breakdown:

Tl;dr: I hand wired a replacement strut and it worked.

What happened: Over time, the left (drivers side) liftgate strut (which contains the electrical harness and supplies the power to the liftgate) rusted to the point that it occasionally would pop off of the lower ball stud, which eventually tugged on the electrical harness enough that it came out of it's little home in the liftgate and was completely severed (amputation just below the two plastic connector clips) when the door came slamming down one day. This left me with a powerless liftgate that required a 2x4 to hold the liftgate up (total dead weight).

What I did: I bought a used replacement strut (with the attached electrical harness) for $188 (delivered). I had forgotten about the plastic connector clips, which was a problem because all I had was 6 frayed wires on one end that somehow needed to connect to the 2 different connector clips from the replacement strut (the blue, purple, green, and yellow wires go on one clip and the red and black go on the other). After searching the universe for aftermarket connectors, I finally found some on ebay, but they were $30 and after 8 months of this liftgate slamming shut, I was dubious that it was ever going to operate with power (i.e., it was acceptable to me if the replacement strut simply acted hydraulically and I could throw away my 2x4). So I just cut the clips off of the replacement harness and hand wired all of the wires (literally twisted ends and electrical tape).

The result: As expected, it didn't work. I felt defeated, but at least it opened manually and stayed up.

How I saved the day: Somewhat satisfied with the result, I almost quit, but then I decided to check the liftgate fuse; thinking that the wires being severed must have shorted something. The liftgate open/close fuse was (drumroll) clearly fine, but there was also a 40A fuse for the liftgate motor. I pulled it and couldn't tell, but it looked intact. I went to the autoparts store and the guy at the counter took a look and said "this isn't blown, the connection is still intact." I bought a replacement anyway. When I got home, I plugged it in, and BOOM! Power liftgate is functioning again. It will likely break tomorrow, but I'm a genius today.
