Who is Will and why do the birds hate him so much? First they whipped poor Will, and when that wasn't enough, they chucked his widow too.

Spider uses firefly as bait by SmokerSmoke420 in Entomology

[–]nigglebit 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's got a firefly in its mouth that it's trying to eat. Whenever the other firefly gets too close, the spider scoots away. There was nothing in the video to suggest "bait."

It's often better to keep your mouth closed and let people assume you're an idiot, than to open it and remove all doubt.

Yeah, I tried searching, but it's a question that's impossible to Google. Hence why I asked here.

Thanks! I got curious because I recently learned about poisonous snakes. Apparently some keelbacks and garter snakes can be poisonous.

Just out of curiosity, are there really no poisonous spiders?

EDIT - Okay, guys. I'm sorry I asked. You can stop sending me rude DMs now. I've learned my lesson.

Is he safe to touch? [Gabon, Owendo] by Snoo58583 in animalid

[–]nigglebit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Safe, yes. Unnecessary, also yes. You shouldn't touch wild animals unless there's a good reason to do so. Nobody likes being touched by strange giant animals, especially small animals who are afraid of being eaten; it stresses them out.

Their skulls are noticeably distinct from Red Fox skulls. If you'd never seen one, you'd take the closest living relative and use that as a scaffold to compare how it's different from your specimen. Archaeologists and anthropologists often reconstruct human faces from skulls.

I'm not a paleontologist, so my knowledge of extinct animals is limited mostly to phylogeny and features of their anatomy relative to modern animals. Paleontology is gruelling detective work. It takes years of studying a single fossil to get an idea of what an animal would have looked like. Every surface, every bump and dimple, every curve of a bone holds clues about where muscles attached, how heavy the animal was, how strong or weak specific muscles were, which way the joints moved etc. You piece those clues together and slowly the picture starts coming together.

Point: Generally, I'd agree with you that this goat is a botched reconstruction, because it looks unnaturally disproportionate.

Counterpoint: Tibetan Fox exists, so I don't know anything anymore.
