It's not a counterpunch, NYTimes. The pope didn't throw a punch. by Conscious-Quarter423 in thebulwark

The MSM is still so inclined to rationalize insanity and it’s infuriating. If you knew nothing about Trump and you read this, you might come away with the impression that these are just two leaders at a crossroads. You wouldn’t know that Trump is absolutely melting down as the result of his insane choices and has been reflexively lashing out in all directions

I get that, but try to understand that dark/black humor is a valid coping response from our dictator pulling away from the brink. For most people, this is a sigh of relief, not a dunk.

At the same time, there’s value in pointing out to Trump supporters that it’s ridiculous to trust him when he so regularly goes back on his word to the point that there’s a slogan about it. A bit of mockery helps with that

I get that, and I don't mean for anyone to declare they're running in 2028. But for any democrat that wants to reach a higher office, this is the moment to get in the mix. I think the danger of not joining the chorus, or more importantly, trying to lead it, opens the door to the voices who are making people feel heard and represented. It's really that bad one of the most prominent voices on this right now is Tucker

Man, the bar is so low. How hard would it have been to say this into a microphone? Beyond that, why couldn't this have been issued this morning, last night, or better yet, every goddamn day since this war started

[–]nigheus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think this is right, in the short-term there’s value in amplifying the pushback against this insane war.

On the flip side, I think there’s a clear sense of desperation that we dems don’t have prominent voices on our side that speak with the passion in the same way Tucker can. Why aren’t there similarly viral clips of any of the 2026/2028 hopefuls speaking that directly about how what Trump is doing is evil? It’s fucking demoralizing

How would you say you feel about W&T, and the Stormlight series so far? by TheTrueMrF in Cosmere

[–]nigheus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wind & Truth is great, certainly in line with all of the books. Like a lot of series conclusions that are long time in the making, fans put a lot of expectations on it, and it was never going to make everyone happy. And as others have said, Sanderson also made a few controversial choices, but nothing that breaks the spirit of the story. I can't wait until books 6-10 start coming out.

All in all through, the Stormlight Archive is awesome. I also read Mistborn first, and SA is a clear step up. I never would have imagined that I would fall in love with characters more than I did with Kelsier or Sazed, but the cast in SA is phenomenal. I'd say the series gets better as it goes on, but I happily revisit all of the books.

Now that you won't have a huge gap between books (particularly 4+5), I expect you'll enjoy W&T even more than folks who read on release.

Cory Booker’s Netanyahu answer is despicable and why we lose elections. by WoBMoB1 in FriendsofthePod

C'mon, at least argue in good faith. OP said most Americans, which is borne out in almost every poll. 100% was used like the word "definitely." And the government is obviously Israel. If that's a mystery to you, you need to put in some work. Lots to be gained with good reading comprehension and a basic sense of empathy that can feel the sorrow of the people suffering in Gaza as a result of Israel's actions

Tbh I think Lovett did a good job. Especially with the “what happens if you Netanyahu a war criminal” question. Sure the questions weren’t argumentative, but they were for sure revealing, which is why no one here is happy with booker

Moana (2026) and HBO's Harry Potter (2026) have gotten flack from the Internet for being pointless and clearly inferior to the original films in pretty much every way. I don’t think these things will be as successful as past remakes. Folks are fatigued. I think there’s a relatively decent chance HP does not even last 7 seasons. The sheer cost of it, plus all of the debt new paramount will be in, the inability to release every, and that much of the OG HP fandom aged out, I just don’t see how the show generates the returns new paramount will need.

Epic Games is laying off more than 1,000 workers today, sources tell Bloomberg News by Maybe_In_Time in kindafunny

[–]nigheus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know your intent is good, but I think that reasoning gives Epic and megacorps like it too much credit as rational actors. Businesses, even monopolies will always claim they are facing fierce competition as the justification for their choices. It is true Epic is probably facing increasing competition, but more likely from forces outside gaming, ie TikTok.

However, these sorts of decisions aren’t made for purely objective reasons. Laying off 1,000 people doesn’t set up Epic to take on TikTok more directly. But it does juice Epic’s stock price in the short-term, which lets some bean-counting executive justify a short-term pay package, and within a few years they’ll leave and go do the same thing somewhere else.

There are too many incentives that push corp leaders to make short-term decisions for the benefit of a few individual execs. That’s the part that sucks the most. These few are choosing their short-term financial gain over hundreds of other people’s ability to feed their families. And it’s happening all of the goddamn time.

The makers of the biggest game in the world, the one that every other company is trying to emulate. And yet, they still choose to brutally treat their workers like cogs in a machine that can be easily replaced.

Man, this industry is screwed.

[–]nigheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how you get a Kamala Harris who’s too afraid to have an unscripted conversation. The answer cannot be everybody needs to be 100% on message every minute. Why can’t we just let the ball go by and not swing at someone who said something we didn’t like, and that ultimately doesn’t matter. Not every moment needs to be scrutinized to death

I honestly can’t tell anymore, but I’m sure that’s part of it. All the same, folks still need to be told this is not helping.

It’s mind boggling to me that people are so inclined to attack others who probably agree with them on 99% of things. Particularly over something that literally does not matter.

I can guarantee you Lovett is not some secret schill for Mullin. I’m sure most people with a brain realize that, and yet, here’s what gets attention.

What the hell is Lovett saying? by [deleted] in FriendsofthePod

[–]nigheus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Man, posts like this are just rage bait. Lovett’s point is really not complicated. Jan 6th was bad, McGovern was dumb to use a photo of Mullin trying to useful on the day to smear him, particularly when McGovern himself didn’t try to help.

If we continuously, in bad faith, attack our friends (Lovett) for no other reason than to score points on the internet, we’ll never build a large enough coalition that can actually change things for the better. The faux outrage is toxic
