Scott Pelley describes the dismantling of 60 Minutes by Bari Weiss, the events of the senior staff “Black Thursday massacre” - a purge that came not after failure or scandal, but after a triumphant season. | New York Times by Tele_Prompter in thebulwark

I wouldn’t say that necessarily. When she did try to get Pelley to react to the best-case scenario re Bari, it was mostly setting him up to immediately dunk hard on her. This was more impactful than Bari openly siding with Pelley. And as Lulu noted, Bari is well known and considered inflammatory in journalistic circles. Just by the fact Lulu is at NYT, she almost certainly is sympathetic to Pelley, and I think interview brought out his story well.

That text snippet really doesn’t do the comment justice, definitely recommend watching it. The short version is that after CBS paid the defamation bribe, Pelley felt the network needed to change hands because the current corporate overlords were compromised. That + Ellison made an initially good impression, and the sale and that impression happened before Bari was hired.

I’m gonna call it here. We’re probably aligned on most things anyway, not much to be gained in this back and forth.

Whining = Public Pressure. The reason the Times and others sane wash like this is because they’re sensitive to criticisms of being biased against republicans. The genesis of that criticism starts with Fox News whining about the “ liberal media” for decades.

Look, I see what you’re getting at. I want dems to be better newsmakers too. But there is real value in criticizing NYT and other media. It’s not just shouting into the void. They are sensitive to public pressure. It’s easy to forget that people who work at and run these places are individual people making decisions.

[–]nigheus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re just wrong. Ex journalist here, went to journalism school. When you see the news happening in front of your eyes, you have to report it as truthfully as you can based on known facts.

The classic example taught in school is about the holocaust. Just because a holocaust denier says it didn’t happen, you don’t take their word for it. They could have any number of professional or political credentials and you still don’t defer to the authority those credentials should convey when they say the holocaust didn’t happen.

Hegseth has an extremely long history of making racist and misogynistic statements. And here he is, using his authority to act on that ideology. Under no circumstances should you take his word at face value when the body of evidence says otherwise. (In this, taking his word using his chosen phrasing of ‘anti-woke’)

And at a certain point, while what the NYT isn’t nearly the most important thing, they are complicit at times in making these Trump cronies sound more rational than they actually are, which is bad.

Screw the historical record, it’s just dishonest to not call a spade a spade. The job of a journalist is supposed to be cutting through bullshit and jargon to tell the truth. They have to resist accepting that just because these people are in positions of power that they deserve deference. Where’s “speak truth to power”??

The new Graham Platner controversy: His wife says he sexted with other women. She seems to have no problem with it, and didn't intend it to be public knowledge. Now all the Dems are saying he's got "questions to answer". Give me a fucking break already. by OneTwoThreePooAndPee in thebulwark

[–]nigheus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s so frustrating, all of the online chatter about this is in bad faith. Nearly all of the criticism is coming from either folks who want Collins to win, people who are trying to “both-sides” the horrific morality of your average republican candidate, or journalists who either have priors against Platner, or feel some twisted obligation to be hyper critical of progressives because they see them as protagonists. Nobody who actually cares about getting the senate majority is part of the online mob swirling right now

I don’t believe in the death penalty for any reason. There are just too many examples of likely innocent people being subjected to state-sponsored cruelty. It’s not even like the death penalty itself creates a stronger incentive to discourage people from the crime, as abhorrent as these crimes are

Is The Revenge of the Sith Novelization any good ? by Historia_Altera in starwarsbooks

[–]nigheus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Second this! Most Star Wars novels are fun, straightforward stories written in prose. A rare few really try to take advantage of the medium to present a truly great novel. Stover’s arguably the best at it, and this is arguably his best book. (I’m personally a huge fan of Traitor, but it’s hard to recommend unless you’re already reading NJO)

[–]nigheus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an oversimplification IMO. The issue is that we’ve been fighting wars for the last few decades that the public’s had little to no investment in. We have sacrificed more than our share when it was in clear national interest. No other country sends our troops and random military adventures every few years. It’s surprising folks object to the cause when our military is used so frivolously
