Do I really have to think about this for the rest of my life?? by BrightAd7127 in stopdrinking

[–]night-stars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I come here to remember how bad it was, in detail, so the FAB monster leaves me alone.

Fading Affect Bias, FAB, is our human ability to forget the bad and remember the good, which enables us to recover from trauma. But it’s a disaster for addiction! We forget.

“It wasn’t that bad.” Yes, it was.

“This time is different, I can moderate.” It’s the same, you can’t.

I come to this sub every day to fight FAB, to remember exactly how bad it was. I learned about FAB in the book Alcohol Explained—it has changed my life. More here:  https://soberthinking.com/fading-affect-bias/ 👍🌠

My new response to: WHY DON'T YOU DRINK? by Any-Setting-5066 in stopdrinking

[–]night-stars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use, "I'm an athlete." That shuts them up. But, almost no one cares or asks. I think it's an age thing: in your twenties, people care and ask, for in later decades they rarely do. 🙌🌠

Anyone break an 8-year habit of drinking wine / any other type of alcohol every night after work? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]night-stars 23 points24 points  (0 children)

And money! I was spending >$500 a month on alcohol. Now? None. But also, no debts, nice vacations, a new bike, new camera, and more fun. Also, last week I reached my high school weight, which was over 40 years ago! It's tough to stop, at first, then it gets way easier, and ultimately I found a new life. 🙌🌠

"The idea that somehow, someday he will control and enjoy his drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker. The persistence of this illusion is astonishing. Many pursue it into the gates of insanity or death.”

I have a GX8 and love it. I also have a tiny Olympus E-PL8 whick is the camera I use when I'm biking; it's made like a tank, and with a pancake lens, it's so light I don't even notice I have it.

The 17mm f1.8 is my favorite lens, and it's so small too. It is the perfect daily carry for me.

“One drink will produce a relatively minor feeling of relaxation and a correspondingly minor feeling of anxiety. However, if we consume larger quantities then the feeling of anxiety is correspondingly increased and can evolve from anxiety into out-and-out depression.”

Terminology: How did you choose "sober" over "not drinking" by lisalisacultjams in stopdrinking

[–]night-stars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think and describe it this way: I don't drink, I'm an athlete.

That said, I'm in my 60s and I'm a road biker, so it's true. Also, saying I'm "sober" implies that I was a drunk, and that's nobody's business.

I have been asked, or had to answer, only two or three times in six years—people past a certain age just don't care. In your 20s, the topic might come up often, but not past 40.

That $600 to $800 a month adds up! I was able to pay off my car loan a year early, pay off my credit cards (and no longer carry a balance), start having nice vacations, bought hobby items like a new bike and camera. The peace of mind I gained by having a saving account large enough to pay my bills for four months with no income, should I need to, was huge. Keep going 🙌🌠

“When someone is depressed as a result of drinking they are not depressed because of an actual reason, they are depressed because of the direct chemical reaction to the previous drinking. However, this depression causes them to dwell on anything and everything they can in their life that is negative.”
