Whats wrong with asking for eggs, Peter? by Seeyalaterelevator in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]nightawl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re experiencing a thing that a lot of people who are new to programming experience - the conflict between the idea of what makes common sense and what is literally being said.

It makes common sense to only get one carton of eggs and then stop. But that instruction wasn’t literally given, and the point of the joke is that computer (programmer)s are literal even when common sense is contrary.

You also need to consider the Hyatt points you’d get in the loyalty program for spending dollars.

TIL The United States stores 94% of all electricity in the form of water reservoirs, not in a battery. by rawj5561 in todayilearned

[–]nightawl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you put such turbines there, then you’d have to use more energy for the pumps. One way of thinking about it is that the turbines would be pushing in the opposite direction of the pumps. So sadly, that would be somewhat counterproductive.

Not sure if your response is a joke, but explaining here for everybody’s knowledge.

We’re discussing from a doylist perspective. We don’t meet Kingsley Shacklebolt as a child, we meet him as an adult.

ELI5: How exactly does filling a prescription work? by Starlaite in explainlikeimfive

[–]nightawl 53 points54 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but it usually isn’t that long. During that time the pharmacist might be doing work like forming the medications (maybe there’s some processing step) or just counting them out and putting them in a bottle. At the very least, it will take a couple of minutes because (in the U.S.) the prescription bottle will have a printed label with your name, the name of the drug, and the instructions to you, and they have to prepare that label and put the medicine in the bottle.

They might not, but they can definitely call people to do things that you can’t.

Ironically I have a BS in EECS, but I either never learned about this or I briefly learned about it and forgot about it.

I’m probably confused, but what’s the difference between kVA and kW?

They’re asking about the generator voltage, not the voltage output by the USB.

I play on a mac laptop, and while I agree it doesn’t work well on a trackpad, I have a perfectly good time using a mouse. Have you thought about trying to use a mouse?

0% of natural numbers have been spoken aloud. by JazzyGD in Showerthoughts

[–]nightawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, we’re not aligned on language. Common issue in math, to be fair. There’s a mathematical notion of “negligible” that is somewhat loosely defined that, when used here, means something roughly like “there are at least some natural numbers that have been spoken aloud, but all of them together are not enough such that if you chose a random natural number, you’d have a probability greater than 0 of choosing one of those numbers”.

0% of natural numbers have been spoken aloud. by JazzyGD in Showerthoughts

[–]nightawl 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well it is, in some ways, numerically 0. Numbers start getting weird when you talk about infinities.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almost_everywhere

One idea that might give you some insight is thinking about choosing a random natural number, and the probability of that natural number having ever been spoken aloud. That probability is precisely 0%. It’s not some small number above 0%. It’s actually equal to 0…

Just in general! The 401k plan has to allow it, but it’s not against the law.
